Any day rugby union gets on a back page for something which isn't a player committing an atrocity or the wallabies getting flogged is good publicity

Interesting. As I understand, the NRL has said its 12 match ban will apply to League games irrespective of what might happen elsewhere.

Is there a contrast here with the way the ARU handled the KHunt issue?

Hunt never tested positive for cocaine.

Hunt was fined $30k by the ARU and given a 6 week suspension.

Can someone explain how the ARU has any jurisdiction to intervene with Barba and the 10's?

From what I understand he has no contract with the ARU nor any Australian Union or League.

I understand that the ARU may have some jurisdiction over the tournament if they sanction the event.

However, if he is contracted to Toulon it would mean the TOP 14 and/or FFR has jurisdiction. However as the offence was detected out of season (IIRC) then it further clouds the offence and who actually has jurisdiction.

I hope this doesn't end up with a ARU v Mourad, the Top 14 and the FFR (and 10's promoters) as I know who will be the winner and it would be highly embarrassing if Toulon pulled the pin on the 10's (I would not put it past Mourad!).

^^^ARU has jurisdiction as they sanction the event.

They also have an arrangement with NRL to observe any penalties they may impose.

No brainer.

Be interesting if he struggles to get a visa,as he's been busy burning bridges....

"We don't have jurisdiction but we would hope other jurisdictions would enforce our sanctions," an NRL spokesperson said.

Even with the ARU sanctioning the tournament I thought it was up to the home unions (where the player is contracted) to decide on sanctions? There are some pretty interesting legal question around this.

I think he may already have a visa as it appears it was planned in advance and Top 14 clubs are getting good at doing their due diligence.

If the ARU has jurisdiction over the event they also have rights over who can participate.

France hands out sporting visas to just about anyone. There's a reason why Todd Carney went to play for Catalans.

To play a game of Rugby (officially) in Australia you have to be registered with the ARU or be approved by the ARU to be a particpant of an Overseas Touring side.

He won't be approved until the sanction is up
