A group of 23 players involved in the Springboks’ preliminary Rugby World Cup squad have been released back to their clubs and provinces to be available for Absa Currie Cup selection this weekend. The list includes 15 of the 29 players who were part of the squad for the away leg of the Castle Tri-Nations Series.

The Springbok squad for the home leg of the Castle Tri-Nations series will be announced by electronic media release on Friday.
“Eight of this group have not played any rugby since the end of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition and have been on rehabilitation programmes, with their European clubs or with the Springbok squad,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

“Our medical team is continuing assessments on the remainder of the players who were unavailable for selection for the away leg. There are still injury concerns around a number of them.”

The eight players who have not appeared since the end of the Super Rugby season are: BJ Botha, Heinrich Brüssow, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Francois Louw, Johann Muller, Adriaan Strauss and Coenie Oosthuizen.

PB, isn't Mostert with a French club though? If so, he wouldn't be available to play in the CC then...

What's the latest on Juan Smith?

Likely backrow of 6. Brussow 7. Smith 8. ?

Last I heard he started running but it didn't go too well. He was targeting a bench position next week but that is unlikely. http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/TriNations/Juan-Smith-in-race-against-time-20110727

Lots of people are talking about Burger at 8 but I can't see them experimenting this late in the game. I wish they would. Brussow could play at 8 on defense like he does for the Cheetahs but with him and Smith still injured I can't see them trialing this before the WC so it's unlikely. Spies will get a last chance to stake his claim at 8 in the next 2 games. They might also try Alberts at 8 and Rossouw has a World Cup medal at 8 so there are options. If Juan doesnlt make it PdV has all but confirmed that Rossouw will be playing blind side.

That's a real shame. I don't like the Springboks but a backrow like 6. Brussow 7. Smith 8. Burger would be a sight to behold. And maybe one of the few that could take the AB's backrow down.

What's the go with Matfield? Resting the old fella is one thing but he will also be losing match fitness.

Of that list, Steyn was pretty poor (Lambie played him off the park) as was Pienaar. Aplon and Rossouw looked good, the others looked good in parts but also awful in parts. Without a huge improvement in the next two games South Africa do not look like Bill material.

He played through the Super Tournament with quite a few niggles and was one player that would have been rested regardless of the whole "resting" circus.

He'll be okay, not worried about match fitness in the slightest.

Starting to wonder if Brussow will ever be fit again.

Alberts >>>>> Deysel

What's Alberts' injury?

Also think they may give BJ a go ahead of Jannie.

Die Burger
Met Gio Aplon (skouer), Juan Smith (haksening) en Willem Alberts (skouer) steeds in die wedloop om oor drie weke in die Drienasies-toets teen die All Blacks in Port Elizabeth te speel
Dunno about BJ, he is relaesed to rest with Thomos Munsters lot
