Bliksem cant believe the first one just around the corner against Wales. Maybe one without the Stormers and Brute players and should be interesting to see what Snor have in mind in a mix bag of NH/Sharks/Cheetah/Lions players.

Bok coach to reveal Welsh selections
Tue, 18 May 2010 00:05

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers will name his first Test team of the year after the two Super 14 semifinals on Saturday and it is likely to include very few of the Stormers and Bulls players.

The Bulls host the Crusaders in the first semifinal in Soweto and the Stormers are at home to the Waratahs in Cape Town.

The Bok coach will name his team for the Welsh Test, in Cardiff on June 5, from Orlando Stadium in Soweto, but after the second semifinal at Newlands.

However, the team is set to feature a host of overseas-based players and a few surprising choices from teams not involved in the play-offs.

The Bulls and Stormers' Springboks won't come into the Test frame until South Africa meet France in Cape Town on Saturday, June 12.

De Villiers has already indicated that he will use the encounter with Wales at the Millennium Stadium as a 'trial match' for a host of overseas stars, with a view to their possible selection in the World Cup squad for the global showpiece in New Zealand next year.

Players like Daan Human (Toulouse), BJ Botha (Ulster), CJ van der Linde (Leinster), Joe van Niekerk (Toulon), Butch James and Michael Claassens (both Bath) are all on the Bok selection shortlist for the year's opening Test.

There may be a few more.

However, there could be a few surprise selections from the domestic scene.

The Sharks will provide the usual batch - players like captain John Smit, Jannie du Plessis, Ryan Kankowski, Ruan Pienaar and JP Pietersen. Throw in maybe Steven Sykes and Allistair Hargreaves. (Hooker Bismarck du Plessis is out of the frame with a neck injury.)

But the real surprises could come from the Cheetahs, where players like Hennie Daniller (fullback) and Bjorn Basson (wing) have come to the fore in recent weeks.

And, of course, there is the effervescent Juan Smith who has made a huge difference to the Cheetahs team - both as a player and a leader.

* Meanwehile the squad for the Tests against France and Italy will be named a week later on May 29.

"Every member of my management team has committed themselves to achieving success in their respective area of responsibility," De Villiers said in a statement.

"It was a very good session. I am reassured that we are on the right track and that I have the 100 percent backing of my management team. 2010 is an important year for us and there is a lot to be achieved in terms of building momentum and preparing for the World Cup in 2011.

"I am excited about the effort that has gone into planning for the year and I am looking ahead with optimism to the coming season," De Villiers added.

ok, more 2nd XVs. More rested players. More dis-valuing of test match footy.

It's only the Welsh ffs.

The very day SARU went and booked this fuckwitted tour, the coach said he will experiment.

This game should never have happended and this close to the end of the Super 14? Lunacy.

I'm not insulting you, but is this a word?

It is in Queensland. Devaluing the English language isn't a concern up there.

I think they can make it work. Devaluing would be reducing the value of something, but dis-valuing would be removing value as an issue. :nta:

Jissis.

That's a full-strength French team, be under no illusions. And a bloody scary one, if they even half-click.

My Ierse Boer will know better and glad if it is. ;) Cant wait to see one of my favourate teams, the Hane on Newlands in two weeks time. Their WC poofball team plays a day earlier against Paraguay, so we'll get a double Haan sporting treat.

Watch Harinordoquy. He's currently probably the best back row on the planet, bar none.
Is he that Hairy Donkey one?

Just hoping they keep Ras in France, we have enough Rastas around these valleys as it is. :nta:

Its good to see a near full strength Frog team heading down south. Exceptions for injury (especially Chabal who I enjoy watching) and 4 players not being selected as punishment for their clubs not releasing them for the 7's comp. Although I would prefer to see the clubs loose competition points and not penalise the players. The tactic of holding back international players (or the lure of the big bucks) especially for the Pacific Island sides, Argentina has been a blight.

The last time France toured NZ/Aus their club season was still going and the players from the sides in the finals logically stayed at home. It's amazing that the administrators who co-ordinate the tours can not read a calendar. I know that a unified rugby calendar is impossible but it shits me when chasing the cash cow generates a devalued test team to fill a timing slot.

The French side has been very strong over the last 4-5 years and the AB's nemesis come RWC time. Which is partly why I enjoy watching them play so much. I'll be looking forward to how Yannick Jauzion runs against the boks and deals with their defence.

On a lighter note I just hope Bastareaud stays off the grog while on tour and doesn't repeat the NZ phantom mugging routine.

Amen
+1

He, Picamoles and Dusatoir make up a fomidable back row behind what would be a monster tight five. The have more tight five depth than any other nation as well.

Flyhalf is pretty much the the one "problem" position for France. Trinh-Duc is only adequate, and the other options are pretty so so. But 10 aside, they are a boody scarry, and good side set to make a run Bill in 2011 in New Zealand.

Hmm I disagree about Trinh-Duc, but I agree 10 is a problem for Les Bleus. There isn't much depth behind him.

The Bok squad vs Wales (Druids) will be announced just after the Stormers vs Tah semi and the Haan one just after the S14 final. This is if our teams makes the final.

Yes, but we can't have our cake and eat it too. How can the SH Nations complain about understrength sides being sent out and then do exactly the same thing?
