Johannesburg - A Springbok squad of 24 players has gathered in Johannesburg to prepare for the Vodacom Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The five players who have been excluded from the group of 29 that took part in a training camp last week are: Jaque Fourie (suspension), Frans Steyn and Ryan Kankowski (both injured), Beast Mtawarira and BJ Botha.

The 24 players assembled in Johannesburg are:

Backs
Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Butch James, Ricky Januarie, Zane Kirchner, Wynand Olivier, JP Pietersen, Morne Steyn.

Forwards
Schalk Burger, Jannie du Plessis, Francois Louw, Victor Matfield, Dewald Potgieter, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Danie Rossouw, John Smit (captain), Juan Smith, Pierre Spies, Gurthrö Steenkamp, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe.

The match 22 will be announced at a media conference on Tuesday.

He and his agent have begged PdV and SARU to negotiate with his club. They haven't even tried.

So they run into a snag with his club and now he is spoilt.

They should be doing a better job managing the situation. Steyn's agent asked PDv in Wales to get in touch with his club and he said he would.

He didn't and now when things go wrong it's Steyn's fault.

Anyway Kirchner is a half a fit Steyn, whichever way you look at it.

Blue, you're wronging PdV again. The issue is that the French clubs are starting to get hopelessly out of control. They're flipping the bird to the IRB on all sorts of issues, including simply refusing to apply suspensions. Not releasing players for internationals is just another one on the list (compare the Irish teams last November with Onse Wiaantjie, JdV, CJ et al).

You can't negotiate with them, because that means you're just agreeing they've the right to do it. Snor is right on this one, because doing it once would be to give a hostage to fortune forever, and he can't do that.

The IRB is getting monstrously pissed off, and will now be forced to intervene to sort it out. Which is in the long-term interests of everyone, not just SA.

We saw now Joe Pietersen and Heinke van der Merwe and Wiaan du Preez going north because of this. peter Grant should have been there in the first place and as a WP fan I still cant understand why they should pick Steyn ahead of Kirschner. I'll repeat, he is the only one coming out of the tour holding his head high, for Frans Steyn, not a change.

Kirchner ruled out

Johannesburg - A knee cartilage injury has ruled Springbok fullback Zane Kirchner out of Saturday's Test against the All Blacks in Johannesburg.

Kirchner had a scan on his left knee on Monday after sustaining an injury during an Absa Currie Cup fixture last weekend. He has been withdrawn by the Springbok medical team.

His progress will be monitored and a decision on his availability for the remainder of the Vodacom Tri-Nations will be made at a later date.

Meaning we will probably get a match15

Cape Town - Springbok and Vodacom Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow will undergo follow-up surgery to his knee which will delay his return to playing.

The operation, set to be performed on Tuesday afternoon, means Brüssow will be unavailable for selection for the Springbok tour to Europe in November.
Brüssow was assessed during the recent Springbok training camp in Johannesburg and it has been agreed that a second operation is needed in order to ensure that he is 100% fit and available for the 2011 season, which includes the Rugby World Cup.

Brüssow had surgery earlier this year after sustaining a severe knee injury in a Vodacom Super 14 match. The player ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament, tore both the lateral and medial meniscus,and tore the Medial Collateral Ligament and medial capsule.

Surgery on the major structures of the knee was successful but Springbok and Cheetahs medical staff have agreed that a follow-up operation is required to guarantee Brüssow’s long-term recovery, and to prevent further risk to damaging the successfully reconstructed cruciate ligament.

That's a shocker. I was kind of looking forward to a possible backline of (using the SA numbering scheme) 6. Brussow 7. Smith 8. Burger. Or even Brussow at eight, with the theory that fetchers benefit from being second to the breakdown under the new interps.
