SARU announced that the subject of the Springbok coaching and management team for the 2012 season and beyond will be reviewed by the Executive Council (Exco) following the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup.

This comes after widespread speculation that SARU's generally swift response to replacing management would be exercised once more, but Roux put the rumours to bed.

Roux explained that the contracts of all of the national team’s coaching, medical and logistical staff expire at the end of the year.

“The formal review of the 2011 season and the process of making appointments for 2012 will only be concluded towards the end of the year, as was decided by the Exco in July,” said Roux.

“The appointment of the Springbok coaches and management team are easily amongst the most important decisions we must take as an organisation. The next steps we take in that process will be in the very best interests of the Springbok team.

“We are aware that there is great public interest in the matter but supporters will understand that we have many factors to consider before any further announcements.”
Roux explained that the Exco appointed the head coach, dependent on ratification by the SARU General Council.

“This has been a dramatic and ultimately heart-breaking season and, on behalf of SARU, I would like to thank Peter de Villiers, John Smit and the rest of the players and management for the effort and dedication, as well as the sacrifices, they made in our Rugby World Cup campaign,” said Roux.

“It is very painful to have fallen short of a semi-final place by one penalty kick but, having been close to the team in New Zealand, I know that the players and management did everything in their power to continue South Africa’s run of success at the Rugby World Cup.”

The Springboks’ next Test will be against England in a three-Test series on South African soil in June next year.

Just as interesting as the appointment of the Head Coach will be the appointment of the forwards and backs coaches. I think there are any number of forwards coaches in SA who could do a reasonable job given the depth of talent we have in the forwards, but I would certainly like to see a backs coach who will have more impact on our backline play than Dick Muir has had in the last 4 years! Or maybe I should re-phrase that...I would like a backs coach who will have a POSITIVE impact on our backline play!

I dont want Snor, Jake White or Mallet, they had their chances. Time to move on. Meyer/Rassie/Coetzee/Smal will be fine by me. No overseas coach can live in the SA enviroment of politics.

Maybe an overseas coach is exactly what you need. They say that the reason John Wright was so successful with India was that he didn't bring any of the provincial baggage with him and just picked the best players irrespective of loyalties to regions/religions.

SA politics is a very different kettle of fish. Trust me. The one thing Snor got right is/was handling this. That was Jake White fall on the sword.

That's true, I think both assistant coaches should be given more say in selection, game plan etc. However, Dick had plenty of input into coaching and selection at the Lions last year and look how well that went. John Mitchell has completely turned the team around and got them on the right track in the same amount of time that Dick took them to one of their worst seasons ever. He had them playing a "run from everywhere" game with very little structure and the result was that they conceded a ridiculous number of points scored against them.

With 4 years in charge of the Bok backs you would think he would have had to have had some impact even with little/no input in selection.

Same thing happened at the Bokke. Weak defense till Nienaber and Rassie got involved. Altho we lost against the Wallabies last sunday, at the very least since the start of the WC we show more tnedense to play with ball in hand. Now all of a sudden you find a lot of supporters telling we play the wrong gameplan but I sure can live with the way we played. I'll give Rassie the credit here and wont mind to see him and/or Coetzee taking us forward for the very reason. I am worried about Meyers way. heyneke probably deserve the post after what happened to him four years ago but I sure dont think the game is the same.

More recently with Gary Kirsten at India with even greater success. Nice thought but I would like our Cricket side and our Rugby side to be coached by a SAFFA. Just like every country should just as its players should be eligible.

Myself have no problem with an overseas coach like John Mitchell, when I mention politics I mean SA Government and ANC. There is no way they wont interfere in the way our team and coaches have to be picked. Thats SA for you.

John Mitchell definitely got the short end of the stick his last time round at test level. I guess in his favor, he's coaching a young team with some potential future bok stars like Jantes, Strauss and Murray.

I am fedup with the high kick and charge gameplan we had over the years. Its done and dusted and hopefull buried with Smit and Matfield gone. We need to play phases much more and use the kicking as a surprise. We have got some excellent young talent coming through. I like the look of Sadie, the Ebersohs, Taute, Jantjies, Venter, exct. You cant play rugby without a fetcher, the more the merrier. You need to watch more CC Boetie, there will be new faces in next year S100. Lampie and Hougie will lead a new generation SA player breakthrough.

Fact is it works Paarl. I would like to see a little more protection for the bloke receiving the kick. I think it's only a matter of time till someone get seriously injured. If I was a Springbok supporter I'm sure I would think differently.

I think Heyneke Meyer deserves the job he really should of got the gig after Jake White. I really hope the Boks don't make the same mistake we did by getting a foreign head coach.

If Meyer was the coach the last four years the Boks would have been even better & would have won more than one tri-nations series.
