Bledisloe #4 New Zealand vs Australia Nov 7 2020

I'd be interested to know how much the changes have to do with form, and how much they have to do with trying a number of options as a part of a four year plan.

We've seen Samu, Hanigan, L.Wright and Swinton now tried in the back row. We've seen Simone, Paisami, Lolesio, McDermott, Gordon and Daugunu in the backline, and now we'll see Wright as well.

Is Rennie just giving everyone a shot to show their worth, or is this a genuine form based pick?

Rennie said this wasn't a development team but it is. Sure there's been forced changes but it's pretty blatant now.

I’m actually ok with the team under the circumstances. We lost our two first choice 10s to injury, who are also our first choice 12s. And we’ve also lost a first choice lock, and our first choice 15, although given DHPs injury concerns and that he isn’t an auto pick I don’t think he will stay there. Due to Covid it’s not a year we can bring in new cover ad lib, certainly not from overseas.

I think the only one that is questionable is the lock situation, we should have had better cover there, but in fairness to the selectors when they picked the squad it seemed pretty clear we were going to bring in an experienced lock as one of our o/s picks. When the Saffers pulled out of the RC at the 11th hour and the draw was condensed that option became impractical.

We aren’t going to win but I’ll accept a ‘gallant in defeat’ scenario on Saturday night. All Blacks by less than 38.

Not a lot for me to add, KOB. The selections are understandable given how much the hand was forced.

As a stop gap hodge at 10 makes sense with Noah on the bench in case hodge experiment goes pear shaped

Glad common sense prevailed with hunter at 12 instead of irae as latter not test level imo.

Wright on the wing Hmmm - not sure he is much better then daugunu but again at least the latter on the bench - Wright (the backrower) on bench - fair enough as not really has enough game time to judge him too hard on his last outing. Samu obviously on the outer and his second wallaby career over before it started.

Angus bell the real surprise as to me not test ready but one for the future for sure...as got toweled a couple of times in super rugby by Tupou etc.

Swinton was the surprise packet as did not expect that one but worth a look but view is still needing a bit of polish to his game to accompany his excellent mongrel and aggressive style. Again like bell not sure test ready but lot of upside potential that in time could be.

I feel Maddocks is unlucky, was strong against the Argies and with DHP injury could have taken some pressure off Hodge with his ball playing ability.
From Rennies press conference it sounded as though Banks was chosen on merit and that DHP and Wright were fighting for Daugunus wing spot.
I reckon we will see Maddocks against Argentina, hopefully with JOC (James O'Connor) back in the drivers seat.

Yeah he was pretty clear in saying that Daugnunu was dropped to the bench for poor handling.

Was interesting he also said he was rewarding Paisami for his two performances.

I'm not sure we currently have the depth in Australian rugby to be playing cut-throat selection policy. We aren't like NZ where you can run out 3 different versions of the All Blacks, all of which are capable of beating any side.

Guys like Samu, Daugunnu, Simone and JOC (James O'Connor) (although I take it he is still injured) all had great super rugby seasons and had played very well (e.g. Daugunnu MOM first game) to serviceable (Simone last game) for the Wobs so far. I think those guys deserve to be persevered with.

It does seem apparent though that Rennie has changed his tune though and he is testing the waters moreso than originally intended.

Yes, I don't understand why Rennie didn't make attempt to lure back any of Kerevi, Arnold, Rodda, Skelton or Latu?
Those guys are experienced and proven test quality players & you're missing a few of those guys at the moment.
All you have to do is get rid of the bloody Giteau's law so you can actually field a competitive side - because you're probably going to get your dicks kicked in with this team..
Which one would you play at flyhalf?

Well, that wasn't an issue before To'omua and O'Conner's injuries. I'm less talking about this match, but rather the side in the next couple of years in general - with the potential benefit of those overseas players.

I mean.. imagine the strength of this Wallabies 23:

Slipper, Latu, Ala'alatoa, Arnold, Rodda, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto), Hooper, Wilson, White, O'Conner, Koroibete, To'omua, Kerevi, Wright, Petaia.

Sio, BPA, Tupou, Skelton, Coleman, McDermott, Daugunu, Hodge/Maddocks/Banks.

I actually agree with you almost entirely (Samu and Lolesio on the bench for Coleman and Daugunu).

I think i need to get my head checked.

South Africa won the WC on the back of opening up selections. With Super Rugby shrinking it makes a lot of sense to me.

Harry Wilson has done a few good things coming off the bench for Eastwood but I find it hard to believe he’d make the side if his Dad wasn’t David.

Great to see Gorgeous George rewarded for a fantastic season of QPR.

Easts’ front row was completely dominant over all comers . Wouldn’t be too surprised if his front row partner in Rhys Van Rek gets a go soon as well. He is on his way to the Rebels next year .

Zero need for Lolesio on the bench, with O'Conner & To'omua covering 10. Hodge 22, Daugunu 23.
JOC (James O'Connor) is 31 so he needs some game time off the bench. Ease him in etc. 2 outside backs on the bench leaves centres short.

Anyway, it's all academic. Instead we get Hodge at ten. What a time to be alive.

No Jack Maddocks or Jordan Uelese. Are they injured?
