It's hindered development for players in that blindside/number 8 position and negatively impacted on the Wallaby depth and options for that role.

I don't really accept that those guys hindered the development, more the talent just never came through. Cottrell is the only one in the last few years that has shown promise but he just hasn't quite gotten to the next step of hitting the Wallabies. Quirk and Browning at the Reds are too short and similarly haven't developed enough (both had ample games before Thomson and Tui).

McMeniman was our real guy that meets your requirements, but his body never stayed fit for long enough.

Leroy would be the closest that gets to what you're after, but he'd have to lose 5-10 kilos and who knows how much that'd affect his game.

Likewise we also have an issue at halfback part of which can be blamed on exactly the same situation.

There almost needs to be a rule of 1 foreign marquee playing in a position per club, and it's first come first serve basis. If an Aussie Super Rugby club already has a marquee player signed, then another club shouldn't be allowed to sign one in the same position.

Marquee players certainly have their role and purpose, but the ARU need to be a little bit smarter/more ruthless in how it's implemented.

mcmahon has a broken nose. is he fit ?

and why are people down on genia, thought he was the best of a very bad lot.

i suspect apart from the enforced changes we may see very little different in the 15/23 this weekend.

reg i like your team but cant see it happening.

I saw somewhere in an article today that McMahon is available for selection this week and the predisposing ailment was described as a nose infection.

Who's down on Genia, I haven't heard a word against him?

i have seen a few putative teams with phipps and frisby as the 9's. i suppose its from a few of the rusted on anti-genia posters, as apposed to the anti-phipps brigade edit: my bad only a couple of posts, suggest dropping genia. perhaps it was during the game he copped some unwarranted stick

Part of this has to fall at the ARU's feet, I like the foreign marquee player contract for Super Rugby.. But it has to be done in a smart and regulated manner; Thompson, Tui, Potgeiter, Delve and another from the Force whose name escapes me have all been playing blindside flankers for Australian teams in recent years. It's hindered development for players in that blindside/number 8 position and negatively impacted on the Wallaby depth and options for that role.

I'll extend that concept to bringing players back from Britain or France to play for the Wallabies. IMO it is poor policy long term. This is not a reflection of the abiliity of the players concerned, just a reflection of their geography.

You can play for the Wallabies or you can go to France. I respect every player's right to choose either option, it's just that you can't have your cake and eat it too.

The ABs wouldn't swap. I'd wager. Watch what they do, and it isn't his strength, as good as he is. Cane can pilfer well, but he was more about smashing blokes. Pocock is a very good tackler, but he isn't a basher. I reckon if we did a straw poll of our Kiwi posters, few would pick Pocock over Cane or Savea. Other teams may well. Just my opinion.

The difference I notice between the ABs and the Wallabies (and the Boks for that matter) - is there seems to be significant further development of skills once they reach AB level. They seem to be consistently improving.

Perhaps this is because of the competition for spots or perhaps Hansen and co. have installed some very good systems.

As per always, Spiro starts with a reasonable premise, (Bringing the European Players back may be a bad thing for the Wallabies, both short term and long term), before diving into misinformation, emotional drivel, poorly informed opinion and comment baiting.

I agree that outside world cup years, domestic players should be used, but as per always, I get ~30% of the way through the article, then give up due to the lack of professionalism in his writing. Yes, it's the Roar, but Spiro is supposed to be a journalist. Needs to start acting like it.

Almost 100%. I think it's wrong to bring them all back and give them all a starting spot. As he points out, the place in the squad would be far better off going to someone like kellaway, even if he isn't ready to be picked yet. That said, I don't mind the law being there but it should be used selectively as a last resort, eg if we have an injury crisis in a particular position like we did at hooker a couple of years ago.
