Paarl Gym Prymary (KleinGim) needed this kick at full time to won 14-13 and to stay unbeaten for the season.

Bernard Swart WP Cravenweek nr8, also sweeper of our hockey team and a provincial gymnas.

Bleeding hell, and on the crossbar, how close can you get...well done to him, and recorded for posterity...

Been thinking about these boys playing barefooted, and us Aussies always having boots from day one, are there more injuries from broken toes or suchlike, PG?

We used to play with boots from u8-u13. They made the switch (at least in Port Elizabeth in SA) to barefoot around 1985. I remember, as I went from wearing boots at the u9 and u10 level, to barefoot for the rest of my primary school rugby. The reason given at the time was cost. Some of the poorer school's parents couldn't afford to buy new kit for the kids each year as they grew. I don't recall any more injuries. Except at some of the poorer schools when we played away, and they had thorns randomly growing on the pitch. Bugger, that sucked.

Bob Scott All-Black Fullback used to kick barefoot. No kicking Tee, Heavy old leather ball, Toe-Hack

http://petonerugby.com/history/memoirs-of-a-villager/blast-from-the-past-john-leslie/

"During the 1953/54 All Black tour to Britain, while the team was based in Eastbourne, Bob and a few of the players were having some banter with the local press and goal kicking was the topic. Bob announced that he had always kicked goals in barefeet as he found it more accurate and easier than with boots on. This was a considerable boast due to the fact that all goal kicking of this era was done ‘front on’ with the toe. Throw the heavy leather balls into the mix and you have a challenge the jackass boys would think long and hard over. The inevitable challenge from the press and Bob’s fellow All Blacks preempted Bob to remove his boot and sock without any fuss and set the ball on the 55 yard mark in front of the posts. He then went through his normal direct approach to the ball and hit it full throttle, smack on the sweet spot to send the ball over the crossbar to the delight of those in attendance."

Not all of us play with boots from day one. Up in the north of Australia kid's don't play in boots until they are 13 i believe. I am not sure if that is a class or heat thing.

You can't kick it as far without boots on, also it hurts after a few attempts!

Can't believe you guys play barefooted, when I played u12's i used to worry about the fat kid sitting on my head and forcing me to drown at the bottom of rucks :)

Yea I played barefoot every time we went outside of C.T to Paarl or Hermarnus or the like until at least U15.

In fact true story I was so used to kicking barefoot that I used to take my boot of at U16 level and use it as a kicking tee!

It's easier to kick a ball barefooted

Those soccer boots with that plastic that moulds to your foot are the next best thing. They even have some with metal studs now, although they're pretty dear.

VRF, you'd think they would've pulled that one up before the kick for the knock on!

Nah not at all. Our U13 Cravenweek tournament is all barefoot. Our lot play full contact from day 1 , U7 between 22 and tryline 7 a side. From U10 full field 15 a side. U7-9 Ballet rugby, From U10 proper scrums and lineouts. From U14 (High School) they play in togs.

Anyway this U13 group is a very special group and rated in SA top 3 U13 school teams. Myself walking line with this kids from their U7 days and loving it. Bernard I always knew is a very special laaitie. Living a block from our Chevvie sportsfields

I saw him from 7 year old practising those place kicks day after day. He isnt even our usual place kicker, thats the duty of our nr15 Andre Hanekom, laaitie of Stokkies Hankeom the x WP and Matie midfielder.

Ja the Slaapstad soutie lot play in togs from U9 I think. We had Rondebosch Prymary a few weeks ago and they use it as an excuse after been knock down by 55 points and the ref stop the match with 10 minutes left. Thats the way they ref these U13 games these days, called it the day when one team go over 50.

I am living two blocks from the sportsfield. Driving past there 4 times a day. I think our Fatty friend had some stats on the barefoot thing. Its actually safer to play barefoot according to the stats. Barefoot rucking is great.

It doesn't look a like a full size pitch to be honest, but maybe I'm wrong. And regardless of the scale, for a kid his age to kick that long it's pretty impressive. Beautiful surroundings indeed
