Regarding AFL coverage, us Sydney people get a taste of how obsessive it is when they beam the Melbourne Fox Sports News edition. The first 10 to 15 minutes of the show is often reporting how a squad member (who rarely plays) in a bottom ranked AFL team has stubbed his left pinkie toe and may be in doubt of playing position Left Right Out on the weekend, complete with presser and interview with the coach over the matter. Random AFL shite first, all other sports a long and distant second (regardless of whether there are actual results to report in said other sports, so long as there is random AFL miscellanea to report).

A bit like soccer on SBS. But at least there is always a result somewhere in the world for them to talk about!

Here in South Africa you can watch weekly AFL highlights but SOO and league is nowhere in sight. Maybe a bit too expensive?

They do show a lot of rugby and soccer. While channel surfing the other day SuperSport was airing an U13 schools comp followed by Kenyan provincial.

The AFL has been putting in a bit of effort to spread itself to SA, including coaching clinics and other stuff. No doubt the highlights packages is a part of that.

hahahahahah ASH you got it perfect.

Me and my mate from school call this the foxsports headline imitation:

Random AFL ruckman Emmanual Derrickson has injured his knee for the game against north Melbourne. Queue 12 minute interview plus highlight reel of his industrious career ft. 4 games. Then, more AFL for 20 mins, League for 10 minutes and a 30 second mention of sonny Bill, before back to AFL

It is exactly the same with Offsiders every Sunday morning on ABC. Because of Gerard Whateley they talk every game of AFL, then some horse racing and then NRL and Super Rugby get a mention at the end.

Yeah I'm tempted to complain about offsiders, they always give rugby shit, I don't know what that ******* name is but he always disses rugby as shit boring kicking when he comes on, talks up AFL all day... treats rugby with absolute contempt very annoying. Always seems to happen after a shit game. WHAT DO YOU KNOW when the Reds play the bulls and digby makes headlines and rates a 5 minute chat on offsiders for how good the game was, he goes missing. ABC is meant to be a bias free station, I call bs. I'll be tuning in to Offsiders when the Reds break the crowd record. I just hope it's one of the best games I ever go to and the crowd is histerical, that will shut him up.

HD is reviving ice hockey viewership -- finally, you can see the puck! The same should be true for cricket. For rugby it's all about the immediacy and realism of HD.

But yeah, you're probably right.

I see 9 didn't even show the Origin game in HD - last year it was shown in 3D, this year not even HD. I don't like the RWC's chances of getting HD - perhaps if it clashes with a NRL finals game and has to be "shunted" off to the HD channel.

Personally I don't have an issue with the level of coverage Super Rugby gets on Offsiders. The show's produced in Melbourne so there's always going to be a bias towards AFL, but the most important factor is that Rugby's a niche sport (whichever way you look at it - participation, crowds, tv audiences, sponsorship) and is battling it out with soccer for a very distant 3rd sport amongst the football codes so it hardly deserves top billing.

Overreact much? I can't recall them being too negative towards rugby, occasionally when Roy Masters is on there's the old dig here and there, but for the most part the panel seems to at least have some passing knowledge of what's going on and can contribute to a bit of light discussion of results/news etc.

To be fair to the crew at Offsiders, I don't think any of them are particularly knowledgeable about Rugby and would prefer not to prattle on about something they know little or nothing about. I think that's fair enough. They did have Adam Freier on one Sunday morning and he was given a good run, and went well. Maybe they should get him on permanently?

I was under the impression he was going to be a semi-regular panellist, something that they might want to introduce now for when the World Cup rolls aroung later this year. Freier did do well in that episode and it was definitely the most coverage I've seen them give rugby.

I have found that most league and AFL fans I talk to moan about scrums and kicking. Then you ask them what was the last game they watched and either they can't tell you or it was a Tahs v Reds game in the last few years, most of which have been absolutely terrible. In fact I would venture to say that non-rugby fans would have tuned into local derbies for the most part this year if they were going to watch anything and but for a couple of local games featuring the Reds the rest have been terrible so you can't exactly blame them for that perception.

When you try and talk to them about some of the recent good games, their eyes just glaze over.

Most league fans have practically had it beaten into them that rugby is supposed to be boring, scrums are bad, and all games are like that. Add to that that a couple of media buffoons who see it their duty to put the knife into rugby and you realise that it's a lost cause really. People just don't want to know. League has been expertly marketed as the game of the people in this country and biy has it worked. Don't expect the average schmo to give a shit about the better game.

Thanks for the info. I was living overseas at the time. HD has really taken off since then, though. Four years ago it was a rarity -- now it's in almost every household.
