medicos have no financial loss if he ends his career early... no loss at all in fact... I haven't read a medico saying he is ready o play international rugby just Barnes saying he'd like to be a RWC contender...

I'm not sure what that means. If he's cleared to play, he's cleared to play. The medical report may never be printed in the newspapers.

Medicos can certainly make a financial loss if they get the diagnosis wrong and clear him to play, since they are professionally liable. You're quite right that they face no loss if the err on the side of caution. Which of course is why they generally err on the side of caution.

A very strange comment indeed. I'm not quite sure what it meant, and might be reading it all backwards, in Mudskipper's defence.
As Groucho says, the medical report would never be printed in the papers (and neither should it, it's a confidential document). Doctors involved in this type of sport are paid well by the organisations for their expert opinion, so that organisations and the player involved can make the best decision for all involved; from a player safety, liability and lastly financial (player and team) point of view. If a player is told by their surgeon that they should not play for medical reasons, the ARU / NSWRU etc will not take that chance on the say-so of the player that they reckon they're OK to go. And medical specialists involved are hardly likely to say "Yeah, mate, no worries, have a crack" if they don't believe it - much more to lose if they lose the confidence of the teams by erring that way. They won't lose financially - other work will be around - but they'll lose out on being involved in a sport that they want to be involved in.
Similarly, they don't really "lose" financially if they are sued - that's what indemnity insurance is for. But loss of standing is a potent motivator for those of us with generous egos to get it right!!

Look at the case of Julian Huxley... medico recommends he shouldn't play due to continued personal risk, the player doesn't accept advice and waits and returns to play putting the club in a difficult legal position... At a certain point the player assumes the risk at which point the medicos responsibility is greatly reduced. There is no loss or accountability for the medico if they've not rushed the medical process, however it doesn't mean the player is 100% cured…

But in this case, as far as I know, he's been cleared to play.

No Giteau has done his work for the Wallabies and is still a contender after 92 test, good for him... Barnes has had a poor season full of injuries and incomplete matches. Wallabies don't need to carry a player who isn't a 100% proven fit for his preferred position... Just because he had a good run at the 2007 RWC... thats just crap gents... TOCC you offer only a clueless assumption... I'm firstly pro the best team on the field for the Wallabies... i'd be massively surprised if Barnes makes the squad...

haha, muddy no need to get personal around here... you are no more informed then the next person, so dont attempt to convince otherwise.

Currently the 'pro best team' doesnt involve Giteau..
A fit Barnes offers more to the current Wallaby set-up then Giteau does...simple
If he proves his fitness by playing a few games, then he should be in the squad.
