Benn Robinson Injury UpdateQantas Wallabies prop Benn Robinson has been ruled out of rugby for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old, who celebrates his 27th birthday next Tuesday, underwent an arthroscopy in Sydney this morning after stumbling at training yesterday and feeling a “click” in his knee.

While the injury at first didn’t appear serious, further examination today has shown that he has torn the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee, while also damaging a meniscus in the joint.

An operation in the coming days will be required to repair the damage, with the timeline required for recovery curtailing the rest of his season.

“It’s disappointing news for Benn, disappointing news for the rest of the squad and for Australian Rugby as a whole,” Qantas Wallabies coach Robbie Deans says.

“No one likes to see injuries like this. The seemingly innocuous circumstances in which it occurred only adds to the frustration, but injuries have always been a part of the game. When the door closes for one player, it opens for another and I’m sure the other front rowers we have will step up to fill the void Benn leaves.

“As far as Benn goes, we wish him all the best for his recovery and will be providing him with any assistance he needs.”

Robinson had been scheduled to feature in his 43rd Test during Sunday’s Castrol Edge Rugby Test against Samoa at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Western Force prop Pekahou Cowan and NSW Waratahs prop Al Baxter have both joined the Qantas Wallabies in training today, with Baxter featuring in both of the day’s sessions while Cowan arrived in from Perth in time to join the afternoon session.

Both players were involved in the recent national scrum camps that were held by the Australian Rugby Union.

A decision on which of those players replaces Robinson in the Qantas Wallabies squad, and in Sunday’s match day playing roster, will be made prior to the weekend.

As well as covering for Robinson, the pair’s presence will also assist in team preparations while fellow props Ben Daley (shoulder), James Slipper (ankle) and Salesi Ma’afu (rehabilitating after an arm fracture) are unavailable for selection.

Nooooooooo...

This is why Kepu has to play LH... With Alexander or Daley we are fucked...

Very bad news indeed. I guess Kepu will be staying at loosehead then?

PS Coincidentally, I washed my hair this morning with Fuse shampoo....

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit!

That is just about the worst news possible at this point. We are seriously fucked without him in the scrum.

I was about to go have my lunch when I saw this. Suddenly I seem to have lost my appetite. I think barbarian has pretty much summed up exactly my thoughts....

Really gutted for you Benny.

Ok. Deep breath. It is not the end of the world.

We have been here before guys. This is not a new experience.

Suddenly the blooding of several props over the last few years is looking like a smart move. Recalling Baxter is a smart move (although I want to make it clear that if he does play for the Wobs, in my opinion it should in the smaller games only). He can also act as mentor.

I still maintain Ma'afu should stay home.

I'm not too worried about the test this weekend, though. Honestly, is anyone?

Slipper, Alexander, Kepu and Daley will be fine moving forward. Really.

You guys are worrying too much.

Aussie rugby has never been built around a strong front row & you've won 2 world cups, dominated NZ over periods, just won the S15 and in quite a few people's eyes (including mine), fave's for the RWC this year.

It's a loss, undoubtedly. But your game is built around the forward pack assisting Pocock turning the ball over, Genia/Cooper sparking something and Ioane/JOC (James O'Connor) breaking the line with some speed/magic.

Cheer up! You havent gotten much weaker in my eyes.

Well just about every Wallaby world cup campaign has had the injury hard luck story leading into it (1991 - Tim Gavin, 1999 - Phil Kearns, 2003 - Toutai Kefu), why would this be any different?

Terrible for Benn R, he is superb, and he is not replaceable with an equivalent for us.

But someone was always going to be broken, and I doubt this will be only injury disruption in the front row let alone the best 22 for us.
