Juan Smith will captain South Africa when they take on the Barbarians next weekend in their final match of the season.

The Springboks named a 23-man squad on Sunday with Smith taking the armband from Victor Matfield, who misses out after suffering a rib injury in Saturday's 21-11 victory over England.

Jean de Villiers also picked up a groin strain in the same Test and has been released from the side, along with Francois Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Pierre Spies, Morne Steyn and Deon Stegmann.

The starting line-up will be named on Wednesday, with the Springboks taking on the Baa-Baas at Twickenham on Saturday.

South Africa squad:

Backs: Gio Aplon, Francois Hougaard, Adi Jacobs, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane.

Western Province captain Anton van Zyl has been called up by the Barbarians to play against his fellow countrymen in the MasterCard Trophy match against South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday 4 December.
Van Zyl played Super 14 rugby for the Stormers this year and follows in the footsteps of other uncapped South Africans such as J D Moller and W P Nel who have been part of winning Barbarians' teams on big Twickenham occasions in recent years.
Barbarians' commercial director Mike Burton said, "We are always on the lookout for players just beneath what you might call the 'test radar' and it has worked well for us when we beat the Springboks and the All Balcks in the last three years."
The 30-year-old lock joins a host of household names in another star-studded Barbarians' squad, including several All Blacks and Wallabies while Cardiff Blues and Wales' prop John Yapp is another addition.
The team assemble in London over the weekend ahead of a full seven days' build-up under the direction of coach Nick Mallett, assisted by Alan Solomons. The starting line-up and captain will be announced on Tuesday.

Can't help but feel a little bit of the Barbarians spirit has died of late. Seems to be too much effort to get the best players out there from the the 3N, a wililngness to take penalty shots and a the festival style game seems to have died.

I thought the last two Barbarians games were both excellent. I was at Wembley for the Wallabies game and it was a feast of running rugby from both sides, except for the obligatory Fran Steyn drop goal attempts from runnable midfield positions.

Edit: I mean the games played in the NH. I thought the Barbarians game down here was awful.

I agree MR, but I don't think it has damaged the brand too much. I dislike the fact that they seem to be playing many more games than they used to, and it dilutes the occassion somewhat. But the core Barbarians principles have been kept alive, and the games are always good to watch. It is what makes our game great, and its a concept no other code could pull off.

Although it shits me that they keep picking Giteau at 5/8.

really, who and where is whinging? There are obviously going to be next to no NH players as they're all contracted in club competitions and this money spinner falls outside the window. It is a bit silly really, as the Baa Baas have essentially become a SH team these days, even though they play up here more often.
