The Patron Saint of Scarfery, Brother in Arms (those broken and intact), Undisputed Friend of the Scarf (head first and from the side), and all-round quality bloke (as long as you call him "Sir"), Bakkies Botha, is crook.

Well at some stage too much rugby catches up. Bakkies was relatively injury free earlier in his career but he is starting to get injured more regularly.

From keo:
Bakkies Botha is out for three months with an Achilles tendon injury.
According to the Bulls website, the Springbok lock will undergo surgery this Friday and team doctor Org Strauss said Botha will only return in March 2010. He was initially ruled out of last Saturday’s Croke Park Test because of a back problem.

Strauss also confirmed that centre Wynand Olivier, who started against Ireland, has a knee problem and will be out of training for the next three weeks. He will only rejoin the Bulls in January.

Achilles is a bad one for a second row, given the way that you end up putting such huge pressure through your heels.

Achilles, and back, tend classically to be linked to low back (another second row occupational hazard) or calf ones, in my experience of watching injuries. He needs a proper rest, I'd reckon.

Incidentally, I genuinely do think Bakkies is a nice guy off the pitch. My position on him v. his partner in crime is well known.

I have sympathy for anyone with achilles tendon issues. Mine are hanging on by a thread.

Oh, it's Bakkies. SNAP, tendon, SNAP!! It's The Ruuuupture!

Hopefully he's feeling the pain Adam Jones is. Hopefully worse. Hope he returns as dirty as ever, because who else am I to vent my anger on?

Bakkies is a quality player so hope he comes back soon. Are we beginning to see the end of this great Springbok team as age4 and injuries begin to take over. Will they make the same mistakes as the Wallabies of '95 and '07.

The EOYT tour was just a bridge too far for these boks and their age hasnt helped.

I feel that this gorup of boks have peaked and that new blood will be needed to keep them on top through 2011.

I think we are writing them off way too early. They aren't anywhere near the ages of the English 03 champs. The biggest question for me is still whether Smit can keep his spot in the team as a prop on the basis of his leadership.

Yes I think we are going to see cracks. I think it all depends on how they manage the top 7 or 8 guys next year and how we go in terms of developing better depth during the S14 next year.

Blue (or Paarl if your lurking), whats going to happen to Smit. He has achieved almost everything in the game is one of the very best captains in worlkd rugby but ironically doesn't seem to have a position anymore, espoecially at international level. Surely he must be looking long and hard at the big euros that he would deserve?

Did, at CA, and left.

Mark it's hard to say. Smit certainly makes noises that he wants to defend the World Cup. Question is, how will he feel after the Christmas break? Especially if his agent comes waving contracts at him. He is still young enough, and will attract big money.

He left after the 2007 RWC and Snor begged him to come back.

If you believe his book (which I am halfway through), he is immensely committed to Bok rugby.

Can't call it now, but I think he is likely to feature at hooker again, with late bursts at prop. I feel the next Captain should be identified (not Matfield) and be brought in under Smit. But that's too logical for SARU.

Of course, the that he wasn't starting and was behind Roncero may have helped. I doubt that, on his HEC debut in a half-rebuilt TP, some randomised nutjob was yelling, "Stop waiting and throw the bloody ball in, or do you want a medal for that as well?" at him in Kitchen Dutch from just behind him on the sideline may have helped enormously either, mind... :-[

Whatever he was doing at CA had little relevance on his NH contract.

He had a one year contract with CA that was hastily negotiated after the RWC. It was always just goign to be a stepping stone into the NH. His plan was to stay in the NH and seek another contract and was already negotiating with numerous clubs. At the time when the news broke that Snor was talkign to him there were rumours that he had already signed with another club.

This Bok side reminds me alot of the RWC winning AB team of 1987. The next couple of years they were dominant but 18 months out of the 1991 RWC there were the same signs of decline.

Everything in life happens in cycles. With sports, it's hard for fans to believe there will be a downturn while the going is good. The Boks downfall is lack of depth at the top level, which is always why NZ maintains a longer upcurve - much better depth at the top level.

Ag Bakkies will be back. Understand they had their families with them on tour and probably spend to much time in bed with ma in the cold Irish weather.

Regarding John Smith, there are strong rumours either he or Bismarck will join the Lions S14 squad. In fact there is 5 big signings for the Lions in the pipeline and they will announce it as soon as all the pens are put to paper according to their ceo Reyneke. Remember Dick Muir is now their director of coaching , so you can expect things to happen there pretty soon.

I will be surprised if it's John.

Just read his books and it will take a lot to drag him out of Durbs.

Manie did not want to qoute names, no names, no pack drill, so its all a bit gossip at this point. The Doep broers wont move because they come in a package and Bissie have a special attachment in his contrac demanding a certain playtime in 2. John sure need to play 2, me know it, you know it and he wont get this at the Tjarks. With Muir there and no really hooker(only the biter Hans van Dyk) I think he may move. Think his contract run out at the end of the year and his parents is living in Egoli. The Lions 40 men squad will be announced today but the 5 names will only be announced in January, so Oom Paarl is making the sums, 2+2=4 , but I can be wrong, mostly not.

Oh and the other one , Ludeke & Alberts move to Durbs, maybe the reason for the delay, Kevin de Klerk dont play hard ball for nothing.
