Australian Super Rugby crowd figures

Well we do get lower crowds when the Bokke arent playing. 10,000 seem to be a decent crowd compare to Aus or NZ these days. To much rugby and myself aint one who support overseas players playing for the Bokke. If we want to keep our CC alive we need the top players and we should have chuck the S1000 and stayed with the S14. Its going to kill our game in the future even more.

Paarl do you think the springboks could stay internationally competitive if they ditched super rugby and just played a full currie cup season?

Not trolling or anything, just a genuine question.

They always did. They dont have to ditch SupeRugby, they should have kept it a S14. They tried to fix something that wasnt broken. The CC (U19/U21)provide the important building or starting block for our top players. Without that block we will be fucked.

Hey guys,

is there a website that has crowd statistics on Super Rugby games?

or perhaps a website that has crowd statistics on multiple levels of professional Rugby?

Is there no site which deals with crowd stats?

Or is there just no body here that knows about one?

In my search, i have found this: http://www.rugbystats.com.au/rugby/

But that doesn't seem to provide crowd numbers on any game despite the a section for it.

Not that I know of, some match reports include crowd figures and some people stick them on Wikipedia in the Super rugby article for the year.

how accurate are these figures. The Tahs vs Landers official crowd was 13,000+ but was probably less than 8,000.

Well we do get lower crowds when the Bokke arent playing.

True, it would have been fairer to do a comparison of crowds in CC rounds when Boks were involved, vs. those where Boks were absent (e.g. due to 3N duty, resting etc). I still believe that games involving the minor Unions would attract less interest, even when Boks are present.

10,000 seem to be a decent crowd compare to Aus or NZ these days. To much rugby and myself aint one who support overseas players playing for the Bokke. I could see an argument for 14 regular round games for this format i.e. 15 teams, conference system, home and away games within the conference, but only playing 3 teams from the other nation's conferences, instead of 5. NFL teams don't play everyone outside their division or conference. In NH's Heineken Cup, teams certainly don't play everyone every year.

Both NZ and SA could benefit from players being available for the NPC/CC semis and final for non RWC year. In an RWC year, they could shift the NPC/CC finals to November, or ensure that if Boks/NZ are eliminated early, then allow them to play NPC/CC finals. Both initiatives could boost interest in both comps, and in particular, revitalise the NPC.

Also, SARU should really take the Currie Cup final to Soccer City every year. That way, both teams would be on neutral ground, they'd attract 94,000 fans, and it could attract fans from every team, not just the hosts and a few away fans. That would make it a truly national event. The current format gives the log leaders two home games in the final, and puts them in pole position to win, which is quite unfair to the lower team and makes it uncompetitive - the home team generally wins the Currie Cup.

Thanks Kiap, very interesting. Geez, the crowd declines from 2004/5 in Sydney and Canberra to 2011's tracking levels are huge. And that comparison doesn't factor in Australia's population growth in these cities since these earlier years, this would be at least 12% over the period I would think.

I also note that last Saturday's ANZ Stadium S15 game got a crowd of c.28,000; Moses' wiki crowd figures for the identical S14 game in the identical stadium in 2010 was c. 40,000.

These trends have got to be turned around.

Great stuff Kiap, I've updated the tables going back to 2003...

Newlands
Newlands
Cheetahs 43089
Bulls 48739
Tahs 37268
Brumbies 38367
Highlanders 36527
Canes 44350
Cheetahs 43089
Saders 48184
Tahs 47976
Total 387589
Average 43065

Loftus
Lions 24638
Sharks 50000
Tahs 30044
Highlanders 34435
Canes 37104
Saders 32245
Saders 38534
Stormers 40250

They usually have them on that site for this two venues, if you want more info, I'll get it for you
