Also from last years rules
4 points for a win
2 points for a draw
1 point for a loss by 7 or less
0 points for a loss by more than 7
1 point for scoring four or more tries

They are entitled to fair time in the position that they were selected in.
This is a rep trial where they had to excel in prior trials, to be given this opportunity.
For this opportunity to be taken away by a coach, who was appointed more by networking than anything else, in a decision that is contrary to what the selectors decided,is pretty fucking ordinary.

absolutely - happens every year and its never acceptable.
some of these kids and their families will have cancelled holidays and paid money to be here.
Its not like these selectors don't make mistakes so every kid deserves to let the next selector know what he's got.
As for sense of entitlement as suggested by one - they do have an entitlement: that is an entitlement to play in the position their state selectors - not the coaches - picked them in.
This is not pro rugby and this is, explicitly and formally, not an attempt by the ASRU to identify talented players for the future: this is a trial to find the best 46 under 18 players stilt school in Oz.

There's enough game time to ensure everyone gets 60 minutes in their preferred/selected position. Then if kids need to be moved around fine.
This is a trial for the kids, not an opportunity for a coach to enhance their resume.

That we can agree on (the 60 minutes), though I don't like this characterisation of this whole tournament as a selection trial.

Obviously there's a team picked at the end of it but surely the tournament is more than that.

On a more positive note, here are my standouts from today's games, and in no order at all, just standouts.

2 fullbacks Brenden Jimenez ACT and Mike Pavlakos CS were superb and have been throughout the tournament.

Lachlan Lonergan ACT 2, looks to me to be the best no 2 in the comp, ahead of the NSW1 no 2 Will Johnson.

Max Douglas no 4 NSW 1. Tall but aggressive second rower, very skillful.
Nick Frost NSW 1 is a complete line out specialist.

Front rowers Angus Bell and Finn Wright as book ends in NSW 2 were the best and strongest combination I have seen so far, their scrum was immovable, and destroyed the ACT, while they were on, and their running game/decoy game had ACT completely on the back foot, when they came off NSW 2 lost.

Marco Bell no. 9 gave superb service and was very quick to the break down, he also came off when NSW 2 were well ahead.

Winger no 14 NSW 2 Tom Yassmin, could be anything, a real match winner.
Winger no 14 Albert Hopoate same as Yassmin.

No 13 Jordan Petaia QLD 1 , big strong, fast and a hand full.

NO 6 NSW 2 Liam Cornish, a player you don't see much because he is doing all the hard work, his strength and defense today and Monday was immense.
I think it is this type of player the Aussies need against the N.Z. team and others.

No 7 Donny Freeman NSW 1, everywhere at once, perfect flanker.

NO 8 NSW 2 Hunter Ward an absolute standout today, no more to be said, tremendous!

My player of the day was Luca Moretti no 6 in the NSW 1.
He is an absolute powerhouse, who is everywhere in attack and defence, he is fearless and intimidating and doesn't have a V8 engine, it is a V12.
If he doesn't doesn't go further I will turn to soccer, did I just say THAT!

The 2 positions I have chosen to ignore are no 10 and no 12, because of lack of game time for the 2 selected NSW1 's in this position.
I refer to no 10 Ben Donaldson and no 12 Brooklyn Hardaker, these are the 2 back line school team players who have played a more than major role in inflicting solid defeats on the strong NSW GPS schools this year, and whilst they were chosen as a combination for CAS 1 and NSW 1, have not really enjoyed this chance in this tournament.
I and many others look forward to hopefully seeing this occur tomorrow and saturday.

Others have commented that the ACT and Qld no 10's are in the box seat, but I suspect these players are more structured then play what is in front of them, I hope we will see soon how running rugby is really played, and when that happens it is the BEST running rugby you will ever see, and typically games can be over in about 20 mins.

Hope others will put forward their opinions on players so far.

Tomorrow and Sat loom as huge days!

To whom?
Every kid participating would happily choose selection at the next level to winning games/ the tournament, as would their friends and family.

I couldn't tell you who won the last three or so tournaments, but I recognise the names of most that went on to higher honours.
I'm not alone.

IS,

Your comment re " not the coaches" in this context is 100% correct.

As previously stated, this is NOT professional footy, these are still boys and they deserve to play most game time in their selected position, full stop.

I couldn't tell you who won the last three or so tournaments,

ILTW, because you must live under a rock. I will inform you that NSW II won it last year.

A feat that doesn't happen too often, not since 1978 I believe when the Ella brothers were in NSW II.

I can't tell you who won it any other year either. But last year was memorable. And if want to look it up on YouTube you will see a simply spectacular try by Luke Rixon.

The rule last year was definitely that a player was required to play the equivalent of one full game ( which is 60 mins) and has to be in the run-on XV for at least one game.

They must have forgotten to include the rules in the program this year.

I've been told that the aim is for as close to equal game time for all players in at least one of the teams

1979 was the last time NSW2s won the Final and 1977 was the last time NSW2s beat NSW1s in a Final. That was the year the Ella brothers played. Mark and Glen played in the 2s and Gary in the 1s. They went on to be members of the Schoolboys team that toured Great Britain that year and were tagged the Invincibles.

So last years win by the NSW2 boys over NSW1 was monumental and something those boys will never forget.

Of course the players want to make the 1st Final and hopefully win it. It's a huge honour.
There's a big crowd there (including talent scouts), a great atmosphere and it also gives them a chance to showcase their talents in front of the selectors in the main game on the main Oval.
As you mentioned, Luke Rixon had a blinder which cemented his spot in one of the 2 Schoolboy teams. Who knows what wingers the selectors had pencilled in before the game.
Some of the other NSW2s players would have encouraged the selectors to choose them as well from that game.

The play off for 3rd and 4th, the 2nd Final is also played on the main Oval at Riverview and it attracts a good crowd and atmosphere as well.

Last year the other two play offs were on Field 2 but i notice this year three Finals are played on the Main Field and the play off for 7th is on Field 2.
The play offs for 7th and 5th spots both kick off at 8.45am. The later the Final the bigger the crowd and better the atmosphere.

So you're right HB, its all a big deal.

Sorry, what does that mean? I'm only going off last year's rules; unless they've changed them.
It was a mistake not to include the rules in this year's programs. It was pretty important for everyone to understand the playing conditions before the tournament started.

As far as the Donaldson issue is concerned and the more I think about it, someone should definitely approach the coach this morning for an explanation and to find out what to expect for the next 2 games.

Whether it's someone from CAS (although the Coach and Assistant Coach are CAS), Waverley College or the boys father, it should happen.
I dont agree with ''wait and see what happens in game 3''

If he and Woodcock would have been given equal time in 10 and 15, then fair enough, but as it's turned out, its unacceptable without a proper explanation. He needs to have the right mindset to play to his best and this uncertainty would no doubt play on his mind.

That may have already happened overnight, I hope so, but the CAS 1st XV number 10 who has earned his spot fair and square needs to know where he stands (so does his family and school rugby personnel).

I think you're projecting your personal experiences/opinions onto others.

How many of this type of tournament have you been involved in recently (say, last decade) in a playing/coaching/administration role?

You're right, it's not just about being a selection trial, but go ahead and tell us how many you've been involved in.

Lachlan White is a good coach and a decent bloke. I'm sure he has his reasons.

SLV,

Why dont you go and chat to the coach about Donaldson and give him your expert reasons why he should be playing more time at #10??
FYI (if you are that naive or ignorant), there are processes and procedures in place when State coaches bring their teams to nationals. They abide by the guidance of the National selectors who also liase with various stakeholders and coaches then execute and move players to accomodate those requests in the greater good(Aust school boys team).
Dont fuel fires that ignite the wrong emotions in parents and the kids themselves and discredit the ASRU efforts

You are inferring that that coaches/administrators put winning games ahead of higher selections?

I've coached rep teams previously, my attitude with the kids was that the aim was to get as many kids as possible into the next level.
And to do that, we needed to win well, with each team member to play their role, and not to overdo it to impress the selectors.
Any coach that has winning their number one priority is only there to advance themselves. Which I think is disgraceful.

You've missed the point.
The player himself needs to know where he stands. Uncertainty isnt fair on him.
I hope an adequate explanation has been given and its been sorted.
If he's to play fullback or mostly fullback then so be it. It mightn't be right but if thats what they've decided its locked in.

Lachlan White and Saxon the manager are good blokes but it may be go above their heads.

The situation is already fuelled but it should be sorted out. Hopefully before todays game.
Its reasonable.

The expert opinion was already given by the selectors.
