ASRU Match Report:

G&GR reports will be published on the Blog tonight. Give that a read when it is up.

Qld teams scored 3 points after half time across Q1 and Q2.

Can this be put down to the GPS plays in Term 3 reason? If so, GPS have been playing Term 3 for quite a while, and Q1 and Q2 have been competitive on Day 1, along with having enough elite level schoolboys to warrant a roughly 50/50 representation in the Combined States team. It can't be as simple as the GPS competition hasn't started yet.

Really looking forward to reading @Lee Grant's analysis of the day's proceedings on the blog front page.

Pretty sure this years GPS teams are monumentally shitter compared to last year. Last year QLD teams were far more dominant than NSW teams, as shown by nearly winning the championships before even playing the GPS season. This year, players just aren't as good. AIC and CSS are not that decent either. Just a bad year really.

I thought the Qld1 forwards just lacked "ticka". They could not get their lineout to work at all and never pressured the Vics in the scrum. The Vics also came up with some great quality players with 8,9,2,13,22 all soundly beating their Qld counterpart.
The Act/NSW1 game was not so one sided. The Brumbies did the simple stuff well. NSW did themselves no favours starting with their reserve front row and their backs were also jumbled up. JJW was in centres yet scored 2 tries when moved to wing while not starting Will Terry at 13 was a mistake as well.
Nick Frost played well at 5 for NSW as did Kemeny and Fenn but they needed to be dominant and they were not against the solid and reliable no name ACT forwards.
I would like to mention some ACT players here but their white numbers on a half white jersey made picking the individuals hard. Apologies to them. They played good rugby.

Be aware that tournament rules require all players to get a run on place in a set number of games, and minimum time on field in total across the four games, but not necessarily game time in each game. It is not usually until Thursday when usually 1st seed plays 2nd seed in each pool that the Coaches "best" team is revealed.

Sometimes this is the best team that they can muster after the inevitable injuries cause them to shuffle their players around.

With Monday usually being "easier" games for the top 4 seeds, they typically take that opportunity to give their reserves a starting role.

Nick Frost played well? Think maybe Brown (4) who did a lot of work in the rucks and made a lot of tackles, thought young Frost was overawed and lost a lot of possession in contact and hardly competed at the rucks. Hopefully they will improve in the next game, all credit to ACT and it was fantastic to be able to watch the live stream.

That would be welcome news to some players whom hardly saw any game time today. If true.

We have a NSW forums specialising in GPS,CAS and ISA and we have Queensland forums for GPS and their Associated Schools. Today's 42-16 result in favour of Victoria, more than justifies their start up on Green and Gold for a Victorian Schoolboys site. I am sure their are Victorians who could write about their schools.

My understanding is that Victorian rugby has a well organised club junior system. That maybe stronger that their schools competition. Equally, I believe about 10 schools have about one team in 13s,14s,15s,16s and opens. Some have two particularly the opens.

Victorian Rugby has been getting stronger, where the Pacific Islander Community has been instrumental in its rise. So does todays result, represent a coming of age for Victorian Rugby. Or a demise of Queensland Rugby.

I think if you go back to the first year of JGC where the rebels were very successful, you will find most of these boys in it. Whether be top age 15's who won or bottom age 17's who lost to WA. Add a couple of new finds, as well as loosing 4 or 5 that have gone interstate or signed on a contract which rules them out. There's a talented group that have stayed together.
In terms of school and club rugby, there is a big difference. Club is very dominant as where in NSW it is opposite. Well done to these boys. How they go in the next few days will be interesting. Go Brumbies.

Great day for Vic and CS yesterday. Thought they were the best in terms of team play. NSW 1 and particularly Qld 1 former shadows of the past.

I'm really stuck for writers: I may have one writer tomorrow, but nobody else and the rest of the week is not peaches and cream either.

People have dropped out for no fault of their own. We may have to miss doing a report tomorrow though I could post a few photos with some words around them.

Gone are the days when I could do all four.

If you can help please send me a convo. Don't discuss it here because folks sometimes read the wrong things into comments in the forum, and think thoughts like: "He said that; so I thought this…" etc.

Spot on and the ACT was superb also.

But expect NSW Is and Qld Is to improve during the week: they nearly always do.

NSW Is had some good backline moves but too many were guilty of ball-hogging; something they get away with in their school games (where it is often acceptable) but not in the nationals. Happily for NSW Is, a hog was appropriate when Osborne scored the winning try.

Their backrow was good but their tight five forwards were too passive as a group and stood off on occasions at rucks - yet got involved when they shouldn't have.

It was the worst performance from the Queensland Ones I can remember. I mentioned to someone not long after the start that Qld Twos were usually better than that and he said "You mean the Ones".

Bloody hell - I thought I was watching the Twos - different jerseys of course but I was yarning, and was obviously not concentrating.

There's three cracking games on tomorrow and who knows - if Qld I doesn't improve, WA could give them a bit of cheek.

Games worth writing about in a blog - anybody interested? :)

Re LG's latest plea, the schoolsrugby.com.au Live Streaming links work a treat, and via them you get the bonus of listening in to the miked up Ref's - all decisions, explanations, calls, banter, and the heavy panting on Ref sprints to keep up with any intercepts!

So, you don't actually need to be at Iggies to have a crack at any of the write-ups; just need to tune in at Match time, make a few notes and throw some drivel into 350 words or less!

Having seen up close, the load that Uncle Lee bears to bring us all the goodies by his timely Blog / match reports, am sure he'll be molto appreciative of any and all assistance proffered.

(This has been an unpaid advertisement. ;))

Guys there's been a few changes in the teams from both before the Championship and no doubt from yesterday.

For the benefit of our writers can people list the people they know have been called in - and if possible what number the wore yesterday - and who they replaced.

Or maybe you know just one side of things - who was injured - or who was called in - just mention that.

Some of this info is already in the thread but let's summarise here - then keep it going as players have to drop out and who the replacements are if known.

Wow - I had no idea it was that good- haven't had a chance to watch it myself (I assume you don't have to watch it live.)

So how about it guys - there's a couple of great games available tomorrow - send me a convo now, don't miss out.

Just watched the Tassie vs SA game. Looked like a decent game of footy, plenty of excited Tassie boys at the end. Had they ever won a game at the National champs before this?

Watched the Qld II and CS game. The opening few minutes showed Qld II's potential with a classy try, but their lack of discipline, high penalty count and resulting send off led to CS cashing in on 70% of the possession and field position.
Qld II only had a handful of phase plays but of those they were able to convert them into 2 tries.
They showed strong defence and had some impressive ball runners. Qld II should bounce back tomorrow with some simple fixes and smart use of their bench. Strong games from Qld II's #2, #7 and #13.

This reminds me that we should get some Queensland input in our match reports which are too NSW-centric, naturally enough.

There is a game on tomorrow today that doesn't have a writer.

1:00pm - Qld II v ACT -

How about somebody doing a match report on the game from the livestream??

Please send me a convo ASAP even if I don't see it until I get home.
