Just shows the differing opinions in selectors with a player such as horwitz getting picked in both GPS 2nds and NSW 2nds and then AUS 1

still dumfounded how the team can be filled with nsw players yet qld beat them? anyone know any reasons for this?

QLD backline wasn't as strong as previous years, I think NSW had better individual players yet couldn't get their combinations right. The only addition to the all NSW backline will be Sautia at 15 and McIntyre at 10 which will hopefully see better use of the centre pairing of Roods and Stewart. As for the forward pack, the standouts of QLD were selected in Browning, Ngauamo and Timu, these boys have been essential in their school teams success and have quality written all over them. QLD should have a few bench spots in Scott Malolua at halfback and Sean McMahon who adds utility in the forward pack, the kid can cover 4/5/6/8 and has done so adequately. I think his selection is purely due to lack of depth in the second row however.

I think the only QLD players who can possibly consider themselves unlucky are:
#2 Campbell Wakely (Oz Schools A) who was beaten to hooker by Ngauamo for the second year running.
#7 Kristian Satui who has been by far the best openside in not only GPS but QLD but was shown up and doesn't quite have the size of Baldwin, Cusack and the like. Played QLD I last year and once again just didn't make the next step.
#8 Tuatala Tasi who by all reports had an outstanding championship but has already been earmarked for league and was in competition against last years #8 and NSW captain in Michael Wells. Still a good effort to make Oz A from Chairmans XV and GPS II.
#9 Ben Meehan was QLD I two years in a row and a good chance of Aus Schools this year. Was selected on the bench for QLD I but quickly showed himself to be a form player and had some good performances. In the end he couldn't make the step up required and was beaten to the bench spot by fellow Queenslander and newly found Kiwi, Scott Malolua. Both were up against last years #9 in NSW I Waldo Wessels so no real surprises there.
#10 Grant Davies (Aus Schools 2010) who has been off the mark this year, have a feeling we lack depth at flyhalf and hence his selection last year, came up against better players this year, arguably wasn't up to Aus standards this year. Poor form all GPS season, lifted for state trials but I think the selectors saw it as too bigger risk.
#15 Sam Greene arguably best kicker in Queensland who was part of an incredible try for QLD I, came up against bigger, faster, stronger 15s and although he made a strong showing and was impressive, you wouldn't like to see him up against NZ schools. I think size may have been his downfall, apart from that he provided good utility value as a 15 and 10.

:Edit: Qwerty, I will spell it how I like.

7. Tom Cusack

Cusack is not a specialist No7. Plays 6 or 8. A powerful big backrower & apparently not at tournament due to injury so it is good that he still got selected - he is quality.

Interesting that Baldwin is the only specialist No 7 in the team ... you would normally have a specialist 2,7,9,10 on the bench.

I think this might be an oversight especially as Baldwin only played 2 half games during the week & didnt play today due to his continuing ankle injury - which stopped him playing Sydney GPS & NSW selection games over the last 6-7 weeks. Hope that he is 100% by England game as there is no specialist backup in this team.

Tualasi Tasi plays #7 for school but has the size and speed so is preferred at 8, wouldn't be surprised to see him play 7 for Aus schools.

Did anybody see, or hear how Gillepsie from the ACT went in the tournament? I had heard prior that he may have been a chance of selection, possibly in AUS A. Obviously the results of the ACT did not help anybody's selection, only having one selected in the top side and a player who was actually injured and didnt play is testament to that. I am curious to know if Gillespie played well and if the ACT had been more successful could he have pressed for a spot in either side? I see he scored a few meat pies during the tournament....

Andrew Robinson is a centre and played outside the whole week for act.

Hi everyone. Just returned after the tournament and here is my summary of the final day.

Game 1 QLD2 V ACT

Final Score ACT 12 - QLD 2 3; Half-time ACT 12 QLD 0

When was the last time one of the major states finished last in the Nationals. I didn't see this game as I was watching the 5th/6th place playoff but from what I was told there wasn't much between the two teams. QLD 2 failed to score a try in their last two games.

Game 2 NSW 2 V WA

Final Score NSW 2 23 - WA 15; Half-time NSW 10 - WA 8

This was a very entertaining game with not a great deal between the 2 sides. The forwards matched each other and there were some good backline movements. The only thing that was spoiling the game was the number of penalties the referee was giving. Best for NSW were Jock Merriman who again controlled his team and directed them around the park. The combination of Merriman, Vaux at 10 and Horwitz at 12 again worked for NSW and was very creative in finding space for the outside backs. In watching this game and knowing that 5/8 would be a problem for Schools I thought Vaux was taking his opportunity to show his wares. Le Lievre was again steady at fullback and his goal kicking was good. In the forwards I thought Pat Sio was close to best on ground. He ran strongly with the ball on the fringes and worked strongly in the breakdown. Definitely his best game of the Championship. Jack Walters was again busy and I thought Max Jones was very good at hooker - aggressive and hard working all around the field. He has shown that he is much better than a reserve choice for GPS 3's.

For WA Pat McCarthy, the half had a great tussle with Merriman and he also controlled his team and gave great service to his runners. He does have a wonderful pass - smooth, long and accurate. The 12 Burton showed that he can do more than kick goals. His defence was very strong and he has nice footwork and a good turn of speed. The No. 22 Wanqa Blake (yes that is his name poor chap) who played fullback showed great speed and his counter-attacks when NSW kicked impressed me. He is aggressive and a real annoyance on the field but he has the ability to put his team right back on attack. In the forwards the two standouts were the hooker Scobie and the No.7 Hardwick (again). Scobie's work around the field is very strong he gets to the ball quickly and this has resulted in him being able to grab a couple of good tries during the tournament. His throwing is spot on too. Hardwick again worked very hard in attack and defence and led his team well. I thought he was one of the best 7's at the tournament and given that this tournament was full of good 7's that is high praise.

Game 3 Combined States v Vic

Final Score CS 34 - Vic 27; half-time CS 15 - Vic 10

Another good contest. I expected Combined States to win easily but Victoria stayed with them and were always a chance. The game was an open piece of rugby with Cs playing a more structured game with Vic looking to spin it wide at every opportunity using some very quick centres and their big man, Maka, off the 5/8 and centres. CS late in the second half got out to a 29 - 17 lead and this was just too much for Victoria to overcome. They scored the last try of the game, and the best, after the final siren to make the final score what it was.

For the winners McIntyre, back into 5/8, reporduced his form of the monday game. He takes the line on and does things at the line to give his runners the best opportunity. His pasing is good and he cover defends well. He isn't afraid of contact and gets involved when he has to. He wasn't picked in any of the NSW sides and I still can't figure out why. Mark baldwin played this game (contrary to other posts) and again played strongly. He has a high workrate and is a strong defender. He only lasted 18 minutes but it was quality time on the field. I look forward to seeing him fully fit and running on allcyclinders in the future. Given his ankle problems his play really impresed me, and as I have said, their were a lot of quality 7's around and he is one that sticks out in my mind. Tautala Tasi again played very well. I read earlier that he plays 7 for his school. I can see why. He plays with controlled aggression and is another with a good workrate. He doesn't exactly play like a normal 8 and I think is too small for the 8's position. Openside or even half-back should be his go. I also noticed that he was showing some leadership out on the field marshalling the forwards and directing things. He was very impressive. The other player to catch my eye from CS was Monty Ioane. He must have been inspired by his uncle on Saturday night as he played very much like him on Sunday. He runs strongly and can certainly finish off backline plays with his speed.

Game 4 Final

Final Score Qld 1 37 - NSW 1 20; Half-time NSW 20 - QLD 10

This game opened up with NSW doing all the right things to control the QLD pack and get space for their backs. The NSW forwards were constantly going forward at the QLD pack, disrupting their play, securing turnovers and penalties. The pack led by Dombkins were all over the Qld pack and they were rattled. This led to good field position and tries to Scarano and Northam. An example of the NSW dominance at this time was the try that Jake Guilfoyle scored after a number of phases set up by the NSW forwards. The score could have been much higher if Debrezcini had a better day with the boot as he missed two penalties and a conversion at this time.

I would like to know what the QLD coaches said at half-time as the second half was completly different. The turning point I beleive came early in the second half when Dombkins was stretchered off. A this time NSW were still in front and were still pressing QLD. While he was down QLD scored a length of the field try by controlling the ball among their forwards and on the back of penalties. From here on the QLD forward pack played, in my opinion, the best controlled forward play at creating phases I have seen in schoolboy foootball. They just refused to turnover the ball, did not kick it back to NSW and just rolled up the field to strangle the life out of NSW. NSW gave away penalties trying to disrupt this play but had no answer to what the QLD forwards were doing. If NSW got the ball it was under pressure in their own 22 and all they could do was kick it out and then QLD would take over again and march it down the field. In the end NSW were just beaten by a better team on the day. NSW did not lose this match but QLD won it.

Best for QLD were their class players, Browning, Timu and Ngauamo, in the forwards while the half-back Maloula, the number 13 (who I must apologise I don't know his name) and the winger Craig Hunt. Best for NSW were Dombkins (until he was taken off), Wells, Calacagno in the forwards and Wessels, Stewart and Roods in the backs.
