Why England’s new tackle height laws could change the face of NRL

English authorities are lowering legal tackle heights and limiting appearances to reduce potential concussion risks, as Australian coaches and experts suggest alternative rule changes to combat CTE.

Plenty of League Journos were quick to jump on Rugby for the tackle height saying it's their last gasp but its being done now through English Rugby League from Junior - Senior Amateur competitions. Will filter up in some capacity to the English Championship then Super League.

Key changes being introduced in English rugby league​

• Legal contact lowered from shoulder height (below the neck) to armpit (below the shoulder) at community and age grade levels, taking in Super League’s reserve grade competition
• Contact below the shoulder is recommended to be introduced at professional level - Super League - from 2025
• Match limits in a 12-month period to restrict possible concussion exposure
• Contact rugby league to be replaced by touch/tag progressively until 2026, when under 9s and younger will play non-tackle rugby league

Recent communication from RA has seemed head down and proactive. I was going to say positive but I don't think it is a positive moment in time for Rugby. It's a time for work which they feel like they are doing from Waugh, Herbert and co.

Its on purpose, most comps do it now. They work with the media & drip feed them story's to create a bit of a buzz

One of the good things that can happen when the shit hits the fan is that some good people stand up to work to put it right. I think that is what's happening here, the report that Nucifora would work in a consultative role in 2024 is an example of what appears to be happening.
When my old rugby club got into financial trouble a bunch of old players got together and built a solid foundation that is still good today.

You can be a great businessman but not necessarily a great high-performance director. I don't know what EGR is - anything related to high-performance development/management?

This is the same theory as why ex-players don't always make good coaches - different skills and mindsets are required for different roles.

I mentioned a few days ago that WR (World Rugby) are involved in some discussions behind the scenes, this is one of the many things they would have liked to see as they see Australia as a going concern. A few more moves to come but they are very worried about the direction of Australia and are consistently a part of discussions. Despite many cheering they aren’t overly impressed with the recent state power play as they are wanting constitutional reform.

It’s not unusual for governing bodies to get involved and trying to push weight behind the scenes for changes they want to see. FIFA has done it many times to force governance change. But there is limited leaver that can be used. Especially considering they are wed to Australia with the RWC

Kid all we like, but Kev in 2011 was the Captain of the Super Rugby winners, the Winners of the last Tri-Nations competition and took the team to 3rd place in the WC. Bloke also has a MBA from Cambridge.

Not a bad overall candidate when you compare that to others like Harrison who hasn't played the modern game in 15-20 years.

Then again, if I was Horwill, I'd be staying in the family business, enjoying life rather than dealing with the shitshow that is RA.

He's been working in the professional world for less than 5 years and the automotive sector at that. No sports administration at all. I really like him but if he was anywhere near the job it goes to show a part of why Aus rugby is where it is. Feel good appointments for blokes that can tackle well and lift trophies.

Or appoint guys who have never played the game and want to look good. I think all ideas of what makes a person the right one are deeply personal and nobody on the arse end of a keyboard would have a clue about those factors. The guy they have chosen sounds OK but let's wait until he is in the political shit fight that has always been Australian rugby before we start waving at him. It may well be that World rugby has pushed him here to (hopefully) sort the mess out.
