I think the timing is right to pull the trigger on Cheika - It will cost a bit but not as much as it would have done six months ago.

I like the idea of offering White a short term incentive based contract from now until the end of the world cup - big bonuses and automatic extension if we win. It would cost a bit but how often do we have a world cup in our timezone, we need to perform.

It's either that or keep Cheika and give up on the world cup and watch rugby drop further down the pecking order of Australian sports.

Perhaps a go fund me page to afford it needs to be set up haha. Sad thing is you'd probably get a decent amount coming in

Can you point to where Johnson has been successful as a head coach?

I think it would be fair to say that he's the Richard Graham of international coaches.........

Dummy spits aside, Jake White is infinitely more qualified.

That would be a far better outcome than terminating Cheika, and then bringing on someone like Scott Johnson making us the laughing stock of world rugby.........

In the situation that Cheika goes then White surrounded by quality support staff would be the way to go, but I wouldn't be signing him on a long term contract, and we'd to make sure there is a succession plan in place in the chance that he fails or pisses off early.

The timing is always the issue
The times not right until the coach has clearly failed, I kept giving him the benefit of the doubt,until this tour.
He’s given up on improving them,now he’s excusing them.
But I’m not sure anyone coming in has enough time.

Interesting that this job in particular is a reputation killer.
I really can’t think of the last Wobbly coach that left with their reputation intact.
They can’t all have been duds, wonder what in particular we can change systemically to give them a chance to succeed?

Absolutely agree. I think Cheika would benefit greatly from being completely divorced from the selection process and getting a new support team parachuted in. God knows who that could be though.

White is definitely NOT the right direction.

Referring to the rugby ruckus podcast again, they were saying that it's all well and good to point fingers and say get rid of x, y or z, but we don't even really know who is responsible for what specific roles within the setup. E.g. who is responsible for the lineout - is it Rawuli, is it Cheika, is it Byrnes? Similar with defence. Turinui admits that he knows slightly more, but not a lot more, than the average person, but doesn't know the answer to these questions. SO - the critics need to sit in a room with the coaching set up to find out what is really going on.

For the record, without them actually saying it, it appears that Kimber is distinctly anti-Cheika and Turinui, whilst not necessarily pro-Cheika, is more understanding of the situation.

So the cancelled hookup with White was initiated by RA after it was leaked to the media, and that White approached RA with the offer to coach the Wallabies..........

Rugby Australia (RA) have called off a scheduled phone call with former Brumbies coach Jake White which was originally planned to take place on Thursday.

RA chief executive Raelene Castle is understood to have cancelled the meeting, which was initiated at White's request, after it was leaked to the media.

It is understood White, who is also believed to have offered his services to Japan as Jamie Joseph's replacement after next year's World Cup, had approached Castle to offer his services to the under-fire Wallabies.

RA management and its board are scheduled to meet on December 10 to discuss Michael Cheika's future as Wallabies coach after the Test side slumped to four wins from 13 Tests this season and Cheika's win rate slipped to 48.3 per cent.

Fairfax Media understands that RA has in mind current Scotland director of rugby Scott Johnson for a similar role with the Wallabies under an overhauled high performance model designed to make the Test environment a more collaborative set-up.

It is not known whether that would be from 2020 onwards or could be brought forward should the board decide that Cheika's role is untenable.

I think the answer here is nuance.

Any discussion about the removal of Cheika needs to have the caveat that like the removal of any leader, who replaces him is important. I'm not too flash hot on Jakeball and I see no other standout coaches off contract. Be careful what you wish for when removing a leader (history also shows this).

Not all woes come from coaching and most of Rugby's problems are actually institutionally based - changing the person at the top does little to rectify this.

Secondly, I think the internal power structures are not talked about enough. I think its emerged that Cheika is a little bit of an autocrat and has too much power both within the playing group and at HQ.

Part of this would be to do with HQ's inherent instability - revolving door, previous restructures etc have left the institution blowing in the wind and its power weakened - easily overrun by Cheika.

I think we need to keep Cheika but make him more consultative, accountable to both players and a selector as suggested by Cannon. Head office needs to limit his influence too.
