I don't have too much of an issue with the Perry Park upgrade as long as they're being honest about what it's for - for example the space is never going to be large enough to serve olympic hockey and it won't make a jot of difference to an Australian men's football world cup bid. There's absolutely a justification for the spending required though, at least in comparison to some of the other sports spending that has been going on in SEQ recently. There’s a huge push going on here in Brisbane for the ROAR to get a multi million dollar upgrade of Perry Park.
whilst I do enjoy watching football/soccer I find these fans to be unreasonable of the sporting landscape… yes they are a world game, but so is rugby to a extent.
the world games will always struggle in Aussie rules/Rugby League heartland.
soccer and rugby should form some type of partnerships to counter the disgusting spending our politicians give to these Australian centric / no growth codes
The grant funding numbers paint a different picture - these were the funds distributed from the Feds to the football codes' organising bodies in FY23:There’s a huge push going on here in Brisbane for the ROAR to get a multi million dollar upgrade of Perry Park.

Basically - obviously the funding will vary year-to-year based on needs and special events (e.g. World Cup campaigns, Olympics), so an average over the last 5-10yrs would of course be more representative. If someone has the day off and wants to get busy on Excel, be my guest...They don't need state funding because they are, you know, attended.
wow its really sad.Don't take the 2010 as a fixture. A few things happened around that time. The NSW rugby had a great guy doing development work in the West, an ex-teacher, part of his job was to get schools in Western Sydney playing rugby, he was very successful. NSW cancelled his contract. You may remember around this time the media had made a big issue about broken necks and mothers and female teachers lost interest in rugby. The schools that played rugby normally had a male teacher who was interested and as they left so did the rugby.
I went to one of the finals when the comp was going well one afternoon and also reff'd a couple of games to help out. The guy running the comp said that from this time it just fell apart and they went from a (guess) 16 team comp to about 3 teams and he abandoned it.

It's not such a big deal for a smaller stadium, and with the comp played in summer there are different needs there. Additionally the rise of Women's sport is going to see the existing stock of stadiums in SEQ pushed to their limit, particularly with the increased concert load they have been pushing through Suncorp in the summer. Certainly they'd have a better case for a soccer first rather than soccer only stadium, but I do think the case is building for a ~10,000 seater to service soccer.Yeah I reckon having a soccer only stadium in any capital city in this country is extravagant. The Glory share our rectangular stadium with the Force.
I agree whole heartedly at your post about the journalist pushing this story.Frankly the level of entitlement from some of the football fans and BrisbaneTimes journalists like Cameron Atfield on this topic is a bit ridiculous, they don’t want a boutique rectangular ground, they want a football-only ground. Which is a ridiculous demand if it’s government funding and it’s to a support team like the Brisbane Roar which has struggle to pay bills and draw crowds.
if a boutique rectangular stadium is to be built, we’re talking $300-$500million(if done properly), and it won’t be football only, it will be for all rectangular sports. That won’t stop the whinging about the condition of the ground after rugby/league has been played there though.
it’s just reading the room poorly if they don’t get buy in from multiple codes and think that football should get its own stadium.

Look I'm definitely not going to argue they have any political nous whatsoever, just that there is a case to be made for what they're looking for (even if they aren't great at making it). I 100% agree there's a terrible set of football supporters throwing a tantrum about the whole thing and making unrealistic demands, but that's hardly unique to football so I try and tune out that noise same as I do for any other sport.Increasing women’s participation across all sports is why it’s a no brainer to seek buy-in from multiple codes.
But so far it’s being a ‘football only’ narrative and they’ve actually been criticising other codes who have received government funding.
Football QLD released a report last year highlighting funding differences to sports for 2022 and using this to say football is underfunded and attacked the government over the issue, this apparently went down like a lead balloon with the state government.
They might change the planning but I'd be shocked if they withdrew. Those who the olympics are most on the nose with aren't voting LNP anytime soon, they're much more likely to vote Green as a protest, at least in the seats the LNP would be hoping to pick up with that sort of move.Is the Olympic Funding 100% guaranteed? I see some news outlets trying to push whether the Opposition may look to withdraw from 2032 as an election strategy and reallocate costs to health and property infrastructure.
