Discipline, selection, a flawed system: Why the Wallabies have been so poor

Georgina Robinson, there is a good journalist. Some of her former colleagues should study up on her writing and learn a few things. The Australian Rugby ecosystem is poorer for her absence.

9 months wasnt enough time for Eddie, bullshit, the Coach of Fiji made the Q finals with less time than Eddie and a lot less resources. Borthwick only had 6 weeks more than Eddie and England are in Semi Finals.
I'm pretty sure Simon Raiwalui had Fiji for four years not 9 months.

I'd like to contend also that England were starting from a better position than the Wallabiles 9 months out from the RWC.

Mr Cotter was the Fijiian coach up until the start of the year

Not really irony. She was the premier rugby journalist in the country for much of her career, and I don't think its a coincidence that the quality of writing from her former employer has declined in her absence.

It’s ironic that you believe the SMH is being personal in its reporting of Eddie, and then celebrate the journalist that took the gutter route towards McKenzie…

It's also a very different situation now. Rennie had a year to go on his contract and it was widely considered that there was no prospect on him getting extended beyond that.

2020 was a weird year with COVID, 2021 was reasonable in that we beat France 2-1, beat South Africa and Argentina twice and finished the year with 7 wins out of 14 games.

2022 was where things went pear shaped and we won 5 out of 14 games including losing the series to England, getting flogged by Argentina and losing to Italy.

Eddie Jones talked up how well we might go to pretty outrageous lengths, made some pretty bizarre selection decisions and achieved absolutely putrid results. He's also 1 year into a 5 year contract. It shouldn't be any surprise that the media reaction to Eddie Jones right now is very different to what it was like for Rennie.
1 article, written after he was in charge for 3 losing seasons, by someone not even on the beat anymore, that in it's 2nd paragraph it tries to push blame away from Rennie. Yeah, hardly the same level of vitriol

I’m pretty certain he was questioned about JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor), a player who played poorly and as Rennie explained failed to fulfill his duties, and then was replaced by non-controversial options, and then not even considered by Eddie…

Not exactly a comparable example.
He was asked one question, on a zoom call and gave a coach speak answer that didn't really answer as to why he was picked over Lolesio to begin with

There were no crocodile tears about a 'wallaby legend being dumped' as there was when Quade got the boot

Fair enough, I did sort of delete that time period from my memory. I will maintain she was an excellent reporter, take that example someone posted of her writing about Rennie and performance in 2022. It's far more balanced and reasonable than anything we are reading at the moment. I fear to imagine what would be written about Eddie if he presided over the Beale-Di Patson scandal.

I think you're maybe conflating fan reactions to the actual press coverage, but the omission of Quade and Hooper, two players (one the captain) who had been considered key players weeks out from being omitted from a World Cup squad in place of rookies...

That is kind of a big story.

I'm sure a quick google can pull up further articles...

he was their general manager of high performance for the last 4 years though, so pretty heavily involved.
Yeah, I thought he'd been with Fiji - just missed what his role was up until January.

In any event - no comparison to EJ (Eddie Jones) taking over the reins of the Wallabies - can't say that Fiji did better with a HC in the spot less time than EJ (Eddie Jones)

Sponichi have reported that Scott McLeod is now in a three way competition with Eddie and Frans Ludeke for Japan's HC role...

I believe the worst case scenario is that McLeod or Ludeke get the job, the JFRU then confirms Eddie as an applicant, and he doesn't resign from the Wallabies.

What will happen if it's confirmed Eddie was an applicant?
Probably nothing, and I'm completely okay with that.

Skilled professionals in any field are having conversations with potential employers all the time. Eddie has made it abundantly clear that if 'alignment' doesn't go ahead, then it's unlikely he'll want to continue as HC, so he's keeping his options open should things go south.
