I think if we just rely on Australia Rugby fortunes to be determined by NZ as to what is next we are truly screwed. Hence Twiggy ball interest for me and Asian market to try and create our own destiny that NZ may want to be part of but don't sit around waiting for that to happen.

Build it and they will come! Lets face it NZ played major role in shaping what is the cluster fuck that is Super Rugby so we are really going to rely on a bunch of sheep shagging kiwi's to develop a high quality professional super rugby tournament. I think not.

A tad harsh. I think JON was a big mover and then the Saffers decided to dictate things. Kiwis are in control now though and if they are not interested in working to Australian market requirements we need to get out. I wouldn't call them as responsible for the mess though.

Last post for a while on this.

BUT BUT BUT BUT

FMD or Holy S or Un F..ing believable. It seriously makes me feel sick.

The E-League grand final rated.

Over 2 F...ing million.

Stew as I have posted earlier no idea how to react or what to do. However people who are watching & playing will become more familiar with ALeague club brands, players, stadium names, etc. This is the way to get information out about your product & brand without paying a cent.

Maybe, someone in the advertising, or broadcast, industry would be able to give us an estimate what it would cost the RA for the equivalent exposure in traditional media – print, FTA TV.

Some people thought it was going to be big, but nobody was expecting this.

The e-League's online streaming channel hit two million views during yesterday's Grand Final, which Sydney FC, played by gamer Samer Eldabar, won 6-1 to complete a strange sort of Jose Mourinho treble for the Sky Blues.
If you've been living under a rock - apparently - the e-League is the A-League but played on the videogame FIFA. If you don't see the point, you're part of the minority.
The e-League's launch in February drew higher ratings than the average A-League match and the competition has proved successful not just for FFA - who attained their highest-rating streamed video - but for Foxsports, who also broadcast the competition.
Foxsports host and EA Brand Engagement manager, Brittany Austin, previously told FourFourTwo the e-League was the future of sport's broadcasting.
“I wouldn’t say the e-League’s ratings beating the A-League was a worry," she said.
"I’d encourage them to get more behind esports because it shows there’s such a big market and passion for people wanting to see it.
“I think, moving forward, this is something FFA will want to continue.
“If they keep rolling with continual seasons they can blend the online and offline world of football. It’s shown how successful it’s been with viewers, so they have the chance to leverage that success.
“Linking e-League athletes to their club’s star players or hosting pre-match e-League games offers a link between the two sports. There’s a lot of opportunity.
“It’s where sport's going these days, so broadcasters have to be on board with that trend."

RA is so far behind the current interest of the potential audience. They are cavemen.

It's is not about passive viewing it's about competition. Competition is in the human dna and now you can pit yourself against other humans from the comfort of your lounge room. You are not competing against computer generated players.

These games are games of skill, camaraderie and fun that you improve at and can actually compete against some of the best in the world, very rewarding whether you win or lose.
That is why 2m+ tune in to watch the best do what they themselves do daily, just better.

How many registered rugby players are there in Aust? the cavemen won't even tell us that simple statistic, I would be surprised if there are more than 60k at the outside.

I just watched the e-league semi-final on Foxtel. If that’s the future of sport count me out.

This sort of thing is fun to PLAY with mates and the kids but it’s not a spectator sport for me. Perhaps my kids would like it.

Yeah man i'm partial to the odd bout of video gaming but fuck me who watches other people play. That's like watching someone else jerk off. Not quite the same eh.

Just read the over 2 million is just on TWITCH i.e. online broadcast platform used, Fox ratings also need to be added.

Have a look at this article in 442 or more the Fox vid on the cough cough match report and the celebrations on the vid about half way down the article. They all do it the soccer way, even the glitter paper thing.

I love how it is now Rugby Australia's fault there isn't a good rugby video game.

good on you BH, always rely on you to defend RA, ug ug.
Where do you think the sporting audience has gone over the last decade. That might be a good place to start formulating a plan.
The afl is, but they don't have a clue do they.

How many people who watch the grand finals play themselves, probably 1%

Edit: of those 2m kids watching, probably 99% play daily.

FFS no one said that.

What I said was look at what is happening, and plan around it.

An AFL guy I know in Melbourne who is hhhhmmmmm according to him close to some senior AFL officials said the AFL are in a state of shock and are in the process of appointing a working party to see how to counter.

So you think the cash strapped Rugby Australia of all the rugby bodies around the world should be the one pursuing the development of a rugby video game? How much exactly should they be spending on it and what is their expertise that will allow them to succeed in that area.

The AFL have pushed for the creation of video games. They are generally terrible and sell poorly. Their latest one is no different. How much did the AFL lose on that one?

Lots of people play FIFA, Madden or the NBA games who aren't football, NFL or basketball fans because they are sports that translate well into video games and they are consistently good games.

Rugby is a complicated sport and some of the key components of the game are never going to translate well into a video game. How are scrums, mauls and rucks going to work apart from button mashing?

Rugby games have generally been pretty poor and the only ones that haven't are the ones that came out a long time ago. Apart from improved graphics a new game isn't going to change the gameplay dramatically whereas the other sports have progressed massively in gameplay as gaming systems have advanced.

If a good rugby game did exist I don't think you'd find anyone disagreeing that RA should try and bring in fans from that but one doesn't.

Killer implied it a few posts up.

I don't really see what the AFL can do. There are a long string of AFL games that suck because in the most part the sport doesn't translate well to a video game.

Well you must be an expert in gaming then.
I guess all those other successful games out there, with 10's of millions of daily players, are imaginary and the methods they use to engage the players can't be transferred to rugby.
We should just give up now and ignore what our potential audience is interested in.

The Rugby video games that EA and the NZ company have developed have been TERRIBLE...........

And yes, I don't know how that could be RA's fault.

radical idea but I think RA should focus its attention on broadening its playing base, supporting clubs and pumping the 7s angle if it wants to survive in a viable form.

the streaming of e-sports is obvious because by and large they fucking suck to spectate at. tell me there are any parallels between a good AFL/NRL/rugby/basketball/etc match and watching some teenage shut-ins with future RSI problems!?

another interesting case study is WSL and it's excellent use of apps and streaming to reach a broader public. again, it works because the format of professional surfing is based on many hard-to-reach (and spectate) locations, and it lends itself to a casual attending public.

final word from me on the success of the FIFA franchise: it works because soccer is a cultural touch-stone, not necessarily because the game is groundbreaking. rugby doesn't have that, arguably will never have that, and should focus on its tangible strengths.
