Have you seen the price of CGI barbells lately? ;)

It includes an indoor training facility and other sports science related things. It's not just the ARU's office building.

Seems the Tahs getting huge favouritism then

You'd imagine once completed it would become the base facility for boththe Mens and Womens 7s squads. Alongside the Wallabies who'll use it for some 5 months of the year that would be its intended use.

I've voiced my issues with this project previously, overall i think its a poor outcome and appears to be weighted towards providing office space for ARU HQ with the training and 'HPU' component been a secondary consideration.

Spending $20million on a 'HPU' facility which doesn't include any outdoor training space, no rehab or plunge pools and no altitude training rooms, all things which pretty standard in HPU facilities across other codes, they've talked about this indoor training space and the 'rooftop running track' as the two major selling points. The training space doesn't look anything special based off those renders and the rooftop running track is nothing more then a strength of fake grass beside the rooftop BBQ.

Conversely, a few other projects developed around the same time:

Penrith Panthers, $20million:
-2 full-size all-weather training fields
-2 gymnasiums
-hot and cold plunge pools
-61-seat team conference auditorium
-medical rooms
-recreational rooms

Brisbane Broncos $27million:
-1 full-size all-weather training field
-900m2 gym
-altitude training rooom
-altitude sleep room
-2 plunge pools and sauna
-25m lap pool
-players lounge

Gold Coast Suns $22million
-25m lap pool
-medical facilities
-gym
-hydrotherapy pools
-theatre
-lecture rooms
-synthetic training area
-1 AFL training oval

Melbourne City FC $15million
-$2million hybrid turf training pitch
-physios
-hydrotheraphy pools
-gymnasium

The initial proposal for the HPU at Eastwood was far superior with a greater focus on the HPU component, the shift to Moore Park seemed to coincide with the commercial space taking up a larger stake in the development.

It is what it is, its getting built now, but it rates poorly in terms of HPU facilities IMO, but it will be a rather nice office space for all the ARU big wigs.. I'm yet to see what the partnership with UTS really encompasses, maybe their will be some benefits to be extracted their.

Which 5 months are those?
June test window and end of season tour: either side of both those all bar the Tahs go back to their provinces and train there.
There is a training field on the other side of Driver Avenue - where the Tahs and roosters train.
BUT
What happens when the grand stadiums plan comes to fruition - I hear Gladys B is for scrapping any upgrade at homebush and concentrating on Allianz.

To your post above their is so much other codes are doing, both Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanders have plans for 20 million plus academies to be developed over the next couple of years.

The Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney in AFL have big plans to develop academies with the Swans academy's said to be bigger and better than anything in Melbourne. I have heard the East in Rugby League are thinking of joining the Swans and sharing the cost and design of the academy.

Also ads to the overall perception we are an eastern Sydney sport.

Then there is soccer just slowly or quickly building huge assets [while we build one in Sydney ] and if those Wanders and Victory academies come off and their is talk of both Perth & Adelaide doing the same we as a spot are letting junior players down badly and inviting them to go to other codes. Below are two already existing soccer facilities the Mariners half finished and Valentine Park up and running for a while now.

The Central Coast Mariners have invested it is said 60 million to date and have massive training facilities already which they plan to expand see link.

The Football NSW at Valentine Sports Comples [PS I can't copy and paste from their link] this is un-believable ...

I guess in defence of the ARU this is not costing them that much.

However sometimes you need to find your own capital and build your facility. I guess this is your point other codes somehow manage to fund these things even if over time.

Me thinks it is a major issue, happy we are getting a facility, happy it will be modern, nothing to complain about .

Having said all this had hoped for a better outcome.

Why couldn't they build the Development facility at Narrabeen Sports Academy where the Australian Mens and Womens train now. They have the fields, gym, pool, athletics track, specialised sports medicine there now and have more areas to build from and room ?

Very good question...
Return on investment for the facilities they would be provided with would appear to be far superior if it were based at Narrabeen..

I believe providing the ARU with office space for the commercial operations became a determining factor, a few key comments were sold to the media citing the leasing costs of the existing ARU office space as a financial drain on the game just prior to the ARDC at Moore Park been announced.

I think it's wasted $$$$ when everything is there at Narrabeen. It's easy to park, has a lovely atmosphere, private good for the players, close to the beaches, shops etc. They could build a few extra buildings for their needs. But what a waste

Surely the biggest drivers around not having it at Narrabeen are the significant involvement both financially and strategically of the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust and UTS. As far as I can tell, this development was earmarked as part of the long term plan for UTS and the SCGT well before the ARU was given any involvement.

Presumably the Federal and State Government involvement wasn't really impacted by the location.

SCG Trust didn't contribute financially, they are the landlords who the ARU are leasing the land off, no doubt leased to the ARU/UTS at a good price.

Constraints of this leasing have also impacted on the value of this project IMO, SCG Trust didn't want to be seen giving too much land away, so the ARU were forced to build up, building a 5 story building with underground car parking. The scale of the building has eroded the ability to provide other HPU assets.

UTS is the unknown quantity, what is the value of their contribution? Not just in a monetary sense, but will their be any benefits to be giants by co-locating the university and the ARU. This deal would presumably replace the existing university partnership with Bond Uni when that expires at the end of this year.

Gold Coast Titans moved into their new training facilities this year, same value as the Australian Rugby Development Centre:

The centre comprises a modern office environment for administrative staff as well as state-of-the-art facilities for players, including a full sized training field, indoor training areas, aqua therapy, a fully-equipped gymnasium, altitude chamber, and dedicated change-room facilities, as well as specialised ice/hot recover baths. The project also includes a huge indoor sports centre which provides the local community with access to indoor cricket, soccer and netball activities, plus a 25 metre three-lane heated lap pool where learn-to-swim classes and separate hydrotherapy baths will be available to the public

Waratahs, Swans, Sydney Sixers, NSW Blues, Roosters, Sydney FC and potentially the Wallabies and the men's and women's 7s teams will be based out of Moore Park. Perhaps the SCG Trust should build one big HP unit that all tenants use? Makes more sense than everyone building their own.

Welcome to the new Australian Rugby Union Headquarters!

The state-of-the-art facility is now completely finished.

It will now be the permanent home of Australian Rugby as we strive to continue our excellent recent international rugby football test match performance record.

No cars here. That’s cos’ it’s the props carpark. We make the fat bastards park miles from the facility so the useless pudgy pricks can get some bloody exercise in.

By the time the props have walked the 3 minutes from the carpark they’re knackered so we have to winch their podgy pudding arses upstairs using this crane. The crane is nicknamed “The Rodzilla.” What could go wrong there eh?

“Stronger as One” means we only have one crane so far.

Not much to see here. Oh, except those two big long yellow pipes are actually long drops. One for the forwards, one for the backs. Yes, it's just one big race to the bottom here at Australian Rugby.

The building is a state-of-the-art baroque art deco design. Ventilated too. WELL ventilated. The crane driver (white SUV) doesn’t give a shit how he bloody parks. He’s the most important person in the whole operation and he fuckin knows it.

The backs Suntanning Area to the left (note heat panels in ceiling) and, to the right, the props Edible Weight Equipment. Of course, no one thought any of this through and all the edible weight gear melted on the very first day (see pic below, it's all melted now).
