Australian Bid for 2027 World Cup

kiap

There’s a lot of rose coloured glasses defending R/ here because of the VIC govt non-bid.

bit of finger pointing and blame on both sides (RA - not so much re RWC) but end of day VIC did cancel the comm games so the belt tightening might be justified.

Think this will be a talking point in 2027 when fans/viewers ask why the sport capital of Aus has no games - but we will cross the bridge in due course.

This is starting to give off some failing vibes.

The logo? Meh, it's not outstanding but ultimately that won't matter when it comes down to rugby.

No RWC presence in VIC, though, is bad for the game.

This is just for finals yes?… Melbourne will get pool matches… right?
No, they've pulled out entirely.

I have a strong suspicion this leak from RA is a last-ditch attempt to get them to come back to the table, given the length of time between now and the official confirmation. Will be interesting to see if it works.

That’s fucked, surely not. AAMI and Marvel are perfect for pool games. Ahh this really really really hurts after losing the Rebels.

Vic Govt has in recent years decided to not bid for a number of cup events - womens world cup, asian cup, union world cup - and cancelled the commonwealth games.

Vic Govt claim negotiations are still taking place…. Reckon that horse has bolted now..

I agree. Should be split between Sydney and Brisbane.

I would have thought you either dictate preferences, or run with the best commercial return. Lang Park is a sensational experience for something like this, heaps better than Australia Stadium. All the same you can’t deny the difference in seat numbers.

My guess is that most Brisbane fans who wanted to attend won’t be slowed down by a plane ticket and overnight accomodation.

Everything is lining up to this being a strategic leak to try and force them back to the table. Even the fact it was leaked to News first when RA has a relationship with Nine - they sent it where they knew it'd do the most damage.

Pretty bloody clever by RA if it works, but it's a risky game.

I agree...

However, 31'000 extra ticketholders is hard to argue against when making these decisions from a commercial perspective... Assuming an average of $150 a ticket, there's about $5million extra they would have been asking of the QLD Govt to cough up to cover the difference, on top of what I expect is already a pretty significant figure.

I dunno, Vic Govt recent history of bidding for sporting events outside fo the core key events isn't great.

Besides the Commonwealth Games, the Vic Govt didn't bid for any matches in the 2026 Asian Cup, and they didn't bid for any of the finals matches from the FIFA Women's World Cup last year either.

The State Government has been running some big deficit budgets, no?

Both of those are more so due to stadium availability. WAC is during March where both Docklands and the MCG are unavailable, so they'd likely have to bid up to secure any Matildas games which they then couldn't get back in tourism through filling AAMI Park.

Same deal with the WWC which was held in July-August, though if they had any idea of how that would catch fire you'd think they'd have made a bigger pitch for the final at the G. FIFA also has some pretty tight stadium requirements that prevent use by other tenants, but they likely could have been negotiated or otherwise handled.

Seems like a very early leak from a client media. Let’s see what happens though RA have form with saying they’ll support rugby in Victora and then doing the opposite

Poor form if they have leaked (if what the Vic Govt have said) and negotiations are ongoing.

Is tell them to GF’d

RA are hosting a Lions lunch at Crown, should be a warm crowd.

yes, well, that was their justification for not bidding... It's not like the other cities/states who bid didn't have stadium availability issues also..

Bit more in the article....Sydney will get both semis, third-place playoff and the GF, while Brisbane will get one of the QFs
If Sydney gets Semis and Grand Final, it feels like it'd be better to shift two quarters to Brisbane and two to Perth. By keeping the paired quarters together it removes any disadvantage from travel and it helps avoid oversaturating that Sydney market (and over working the field), which 2-3 quarters on top of 2 semis, a final and presumably a lot of pool games might.

I'm guessing the 3rd place playoff will also be down to Perth vs Sydney, it's probably the one you want to keep in Sydney as it'll have the greatest concentration of travelling fans to take up the tickets. That said, if it doesn't need to be in as a large a stadium as the Semis/Final it might make sense in Brisbane given the lean offering of finals games and proximity to Sydney. Also has the benefit of not overworking the field before the final.

Oh, probably also worth noting there will be an extra round of knock out games this time with the growth in the tournament, so there's a few more games with an elevated profile to spread around.

RA leaking to get Vic government back to WR (World Rugby)'s negotiating table is what supporting rugby in Victoria looks like.
