‘No lay down misère’: Australia’s 2027 World Cup bid hangs in the balance
Rugby Australia is pulling out all stops to secure hundreds of millions in federal government support for its 2027 World Cup bid.

The news comes as Australia’s credibility as a host nation hangs in the balance. The Herald can reveal that with a little more than two months before the World Rugby Council votes to award hosting rights, RA has not yet secured a federal government funding commitment worth about $120 million.
The governing body has locked in a similar amount in state government funding but is yet to receive a commitment from Canberra. A federal government source indicated the Morrison Government was supportive of the bid but potentially not at the price RA was asking.
“We’re no lay down misère to get the World Cup; we have to secure it first and that’s done by working with our state and federal governments, so the next few months is crucial in ensuring that we actually get the tournament here,” Kearns said.
RA has compiled a list of more than 80 regional towns and cities that could play host to World Cup teams during the tournament or for pre-tournament staging camps if Australia is awarded the hosting rights to the world’s third biggest international sporting event.
The regions will be linked with art, food and wine trails, with renowned Archibald prize-winning artist Ben Quilty enlisted to help showcase the country’s rich Indigenous art traditions. In a similar vein to New Zealand’s successful 2011 World Cup, which showcased the country’s food, wine and culture, the plans are an effort to maximise an expected $2.5 billion tourism injection from the seven-week tournament. Modelling indicates 240,000 people will arrive on Australian shores, a figure bid advisory director and Qantas executive Olivia Wirth translated as “400 full A380s”.
I really hope we can secure the cup but articles like this worry me.
