Who was the last Wallaby outside back to not debut on the wing?



edit: I can think of maybe Morahan against Scotland. But in terms of players debuting in a full strength wallabies side, they seem to be a rare occurrence.

Not really - an opinion on an internet forum is not a selection in a Test Team... the point being that unless the Australian Selectors suddenly start changing Gill for Hooper and the like, then your point really has no point at all...

The other point is that I nor anyone else in the context of this discussion have disagreed with the All Black Selectors. If you would like to be condecending, brush up on your comprehension.

My thoughts on the British & Irish Lions so far on this tour has been that they are a formiddable, but not unbeatable team. I have been most impressed with their outside backs, and was mortified last Saturday to find even the Tahs being found wanting out-wide, with Wings, F/B and O/C being caugt out of position more than once... This has now been a common-thread in every single match on tour.

Setanta then did me the disservice of following the Tahs game with a highlight package from the 2001 Tour, and whilst I knew the 2001 line-up in theory, I was struck by how much stronger this Wallabies Team was, than the one being named for next Saturday. There may be a few positions where the current players outshine their predecessors, but I would have to say the old vintage looked all-round a much stronger side...

I will watch Saturday's game with equal measures of excitement, and trepidation. I don't even want to THINK about the Cricket!

So any thoughts on the make up of the battle-row this weekend if Palu is unavailable.

I'd probably lean towards bringing Dennis in to start at no.8. He has the massive advantage of having played there last week. Although I think McCalman is a bit stronger at the breakdown.

From our existing squad? Fucked if I know! ;-) Palu was it right? The rest were 6/8's but better at 6? Higgers would've been the next best bet.
If Samo had more than 60 mins in him, or Fotu had some runs on the board at Test level I'd have either of them I guess. But from within the squad I think I'd have Dennis.

Mowen can go to 8 though, so it doesn't matter if we pick a 6. It all depends on how many backs are going to be on the bench, if it is 2, then I'd have MMM start at 6 and let him go nuts for 30 minutes knowing there is cover on the bench, if 3 backs reserves then either McCalman or Dennis (not much between them, maybe McCalman slightly more mongrel him him?) with MMM on the bench.

Although there is still a good chance we might see Simmons or Douglas on the bench as specialist lock cover.

If Dennis does start, then it is likely we will have 3 current super captains in the pack, and 7 current or past captains in positions 1-9.

I was very keen to see us play a 6/2 bench, but with Ioane/McCabe/Beale/Barnes potentially all in the 23, Im not sure we can afford to.

My concern for this game is really how fast (or slowly) the Wallabies hit the ground running. Avid Wallaby fans know all too well that the first test performance of the year tends to be disjointed, stuttering performance, played at about 80% intensity. Here we really need to be playing champagne, high intensity rugby from minute 1. Not sure we can do that.

Hopefully the Suncorp factor plays a big part in this game. The Wallabies usually play their best footy at Suncorp.

I'm expecting Deans to name Barnes at 15 and McCabe at inside centre. With Lilo and Beale on the bench. I think Deans will concentrate on a defensive approach for the first 50 minutes and then bring on the more attacking players in the final 30. Not sure I agree with that approach. And Im not sure McCabe offers anything more than Lilo in terms of defense.

I'd say Cummins would be as frustrated as a legless cat in a Fish Shop and that when given the chance, he will be off the bench and into position faster than an 18 year old boy grabbing a fist full of free frangers at Schoolies week.

On another note, Lions were not continually offside in defence as claimed by so many. Of the 71 Waratah breakdowns the Lions only got in front of the last feet on 3 occasions - it's just that their line speed is so good.
