Aussie Player Exodus

Reds could use a backup FB now...but it's ok we have Maranta. Rebels have Maddocks and Hodge (now with horwitz a 12 option) and if the Force fold they will have DHP. and Wingers are pretty full up with Naivalu, Koroibete, Hutchison and not sure about contract status of Shipperly and Fou.

No other team will offer a decent salary for a backup 15, so really not surprised he's looking for money.

One thing we have to remember with the non-stars of rugby...is that they as well are limited to 10-14 years of rugby at best....It's one thing if you are on 500k+ and after a huge chunk is taxed you can still invest wisely into property and business for life after rugby....but if you are stuck on 100k or less (magnay, toua)...and you know your next offer for another 3 years isn't going to be great...then GO...get some extra money, get yourself some security, then if you want, come back when your worth more to an Australian franchise (considering spots will be harder to get) as an older, more experienced, and hopefully better player.

Magnay has been on peanuts with a sup 3 year contract since school - obviously his new contract wasn't worth much either considering the Reds feel he owes them for getting him through all his injuries. Toua is almost 28 and seriously injury prone and probably just wants some extra $ and games under his belt and Placid as you said...has been on good money and would be looking at a serious pay cut to stay in Australia as a player (let's be honest) that isn't looking on the path to anything more substantial. Even Horne would have been looking at a haircut as the ARU bumped up his previous contract but highly doubt they would this time.

Without a paying 2nd tier competition, then these guys probably should be going to Japan to supplement their incomes (obviously it taxes them physically and mentally so the goal should be to earn an australian contract which is good enough to not have to travel back and forth). The Japanese season is ending weeks earlier now so even finalists wouldn't miss any Super Rugby. HOWEVER if you DO go to Japan, upon return to Australia, you need to pass physical and medical tests or your Super Rugby contract is void.

he was offered massive money at the Rebels. Not so at the Reds.

He was offered a full time contract in the squad as opposed to an EPS. He was also offered an extra year. Not 'massive money'. He wouldn't have been in the Rebels' Top 20 earners. Context is important here when you're (incorrectly) painting somebody as a money-hungry mercenary.

bloody hell, at 22 he should just be starting to find his place, same age as Duncan Paia'aua who has only started to shine in 2017

This is the way of the future. No transfer fees means that the richer unions can pillage the poorer ones at will.

What transfer fee would ever be paid for Placid since he's an UNCONTRACTED player

Transfer fees first and foremost require significant changes to the contracting structure and attitudes of the "Selling Union", there is no obligation, moral or otherwise for the buyers and World Rugby itself to make those changes without significant push from the "selling Unions".

There's plenty of scope for clubs paying for releases under the current system, it happens reasonably often between NH Clubs. You just need to be willing to sell!

See Randwick's Will Munro is off to France to join the other 140 or so players OS. He played for the Australian Barbarians this year and previously was with the Eagles & Rams NRC squads.
2 more Shute Shield stars off to Europe. Paul Asquith & Denny Godinet from Souths are gone according to the commentary team from yesterdays game.

Further reports have Waratahs squad fly half Andrew Deegan heading overseas. Seems he has slipped behind Mack Mason on the pecking order. He is on the up so this is a further loss to our base here.

Yeh bit annoying to see Deegan leave when Hawera and Bachop are still around (thought tbh not expecting bachop to be retained when a team is removed - existing team will likely have Lance, Horwitz and Rebels former aus u20 flyhalf Mcgregor

I'm happy enough that Hawera has been resigned. He's been pretty good this year and could easily be a contender for the Wallabies in two years when he qualifies.

Deegan's situation is unfortunate but realistically he struggles to get much or any game time at any Super Rugby team next year and probably can earn a reasonable amount more overseas.

At the earliest he could play for the Wallabies in the June tests in 2020... if he hangs around that long
In the mean time increasingly scarce Australia rugby resources are wasted on a player who is inelegible for Australia

Bloody ridiculous, yet the Rebels and Brumbies have Wallaby ineligible fly-halves

I think Deegan is an excellent premier rugby player but marginal at Super Rugby level. I know the Aus franchises are scratching for No 10s but I don't think Deegan was the answer to any of the problems. Good luck to him o/s though.

He just re-signed for two years didn't he? Seems an intent to become Australian eligible from what I can see.

Don't get me wrong, it would be better if a player currently eligible for the Wallabies was starting at 10 for the Brumbies but I don't really think there is anyone currently good enough playing behind someone else elsewhere.

BH i wish I had your confidence in Wharanui. He's done a passable job this year and may improve with more experience, but to my eye he doesn't have the ability to manage the attack as a top level No10 should.

He was the Brumbies worst player on the weekend.

I was left scratching my head saying "WTF, is he really the best the Brumbies have to offer?"

It's no wonder Christian's being rushed back for the semi-final. Hawera was THAT bad that CCL is going to play his first XV game back after 2 years in a semi-final

JJ I agree with your sentiment, but Christian only missed this year, 12 months out of the game. I concede it does seem a lot longer though.
