Audacious Moments in Rugby

Perhaps the most audacious thing I have seen on a rugby field is a referee awarding 4 penalty tries in one match.

I believe it was Paul Honas in a provincial game in NZ between Otago and North Harbour.

He should have just awarded a penalty game (is that even possible?). I don't know about audacious but it sounds completely ridiculous

it was mentioned in an article by Jim Tucker in the wash up of the Quade kick, but it was back in the late 80s the last time QLD Uni won a Brisbane Premiership. It was when crowds turned up to club GFs and the QRU promoted them. Anyway, before this game at Ballymore 100s of frisbees were thrown into the crowd as a promotion.

Move forward into the game, at one stage the opposition (can't remember, possibly Wests or Brothers?) put a deep kick into the ingoal area. The Uni fullback, one Greg Martin, jogged back under no pressure and gathered the ball as it came to a stop in the in-goal area. He jogged across the dead ball area, having not place the ball yet, spotted a frisbee that someone had thrown onto the field, near the dead ball line, jogged a full 40ms or so, still not a defender near him, picked up the frisbee threw it back to the crowd, before finally dotting the ball down for a 22.

Fantastic!

I was wondering what Timmy was on about in the commentary for the Cheetahs game and now I know it was this incident.

I couldn't find a clip but Carlos set up a few tries with a 'kick' off his knee.....until they banned it....was one of the first rugby guys to really embrace the banana kick as well...

I don't know about audacious but I once played a game where the opposing teams winger only had one arm and one eye. He played on the left wing only so as he said 'he can keep his eye on the ball all the time'. At one stage of the game I even saw him standing there having a swig of beer and a cigarette one of his mates gave him on the sideline. Fair play to the bloke I say... rugby is certainly a game for everyone.

My favourite Carlos moment of all time, just edging the one mentioned in the first post, was his cut-out pass to Stirling Mortlock.... :)

Couldn't get that video to work. Found it here:

All I can say is wow.

I love how he puts the ball down right in the corner, just to make the kick harder.....for himself!!

That last one has to be the winner! In the context of the game, such audacity and sheer brilliance! From memory, he converted the kick as well.

It was perhaps not audacious, but some of the tries Rupeni Caucaunibuka (I win the spelling comp) scored for the Blues left me short of oxygen.

The one against the Brumbies in the wet and mud is my favourite Super try of all time. Running at full tilt and scoops the ball up in one hand and knocks a few defenders away and scores

LOL....I remember crying after that game I believe....lol

I was watching in a pub in Melbourne with a bunch of rugby-naive Mexicans. They quite enjoyed the match, although didn't really get what was going on. They were particularly bemused, at the end, as to why the 2 of 3 Kiwis sitting in front of us were actually crying, and why the other one, to whom I had spoken not a word all night, nor deliberately baited in any way, told me to fuck off!! Unless wearing a Wallaby jersey was bait enough? Oh, and there were a few drunken "yee-hahs" and "woo-hoos". But apart from that, I can't imagine what I did to upset him. ;)
Best explanation I had for them was to imagine Australia were St Kilda, and NZ were Carlton, and they kind of got it. (This was 2003).
