Audacious Moments in Rugby

An article in the Australian today about Quade Cooper's cross field kick in his own in-goal against the Cheetahs got me thinking about these moments of seeming madness in rugby. Whilst audacious, the Red's were winning comfortably and whether he knew it or not, there was a knock-on advantage being played.

I thought I'd start this thread to get some of those moments madness/brilliance that stick in people's minds and start with one I'll never forget.

A few years ago in the Super 12, the Crusaders were playing the Blues in the second round. The Blues, winning by one point in the 80th minute, had the ball in their own in goal. Carlos Spencer, rather than clear the ball and end the game with a one point win, decided to run it. With a huge long pass to Smoking Joe, which actually sailed in between his own uprights, he started the counter attack. A length of the field later and a few passes, Carlos received the final pass back to score under the posts. Converting for the 8 point win, the Crusaders were left without the game or the 'finishing within 7' bonus point!

I think that the action is still on here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdpuh4y0lpw

I'd love to hear about similar moments in the great game of Rugby!

I thought this was pretty audacious. Still one of my favourite tries of any era.

I'm just trying to think of one of our audacious ones against uni, probably too many to remember ;)

Noticed you in Mike's Superbru pool as well - small world!

I forgot the detail at the end where Carlos put the ball in the corner when he had the opportunity to put it under the posts then converted from the sideline..

For wallaby moments you've got to include Campese. There are quite a few spectacular tries in this, my favourite is the 1991 WRC semi vs ABs scored by Horan. Brings back good memories with Ella, Lynagh, Farr-Jones, Eales, etc running rampant. See 3:18 for Horan's try and also the famous try against the Ba Bas at 0:36.

I just watched that video and it made me all misty eyed :) Bloody hell some of that backline play was just breathtaking and Campo was obviously right in the middle of all that.

Perhaps the most audacious thing I have seen on a rugby field is a referee awarding 4 penalty tries in one match.

I believe it was Paul Honas in a provincial game in NZ between Otago and North Harbour.

it was mentioned in an article by Jim Tucker in the wash up of the Quade kick, but it was back in the late 80s the last time QLD Uni won a Brisbane Premiership. It was when crowds turned up to club GFs and the QRU promoted them. Anyway, before this game at Ballymore 100s of frisbees were thrown into the crowd as a promotion.

Move forward into the game, at one stage the opposition (can't remember, possibly Wests or Brothers?) put a deep kick into the ingoal area. The Uni fullback, one Greg Martin, jogged back under no pressure and gathered the ball as it came to a stop in the in-goal area. He jogged across the dead ball area, having not place the ball yet, spotted a frisbee that someone had thrown onto the field, near the dead ball line, jogged a full 40ms or so, still not a defender near him, picked up the frisbee threw it back to the crowd, before finally dotting the ball down for a 22.

thats not audacious... thats purely a ref who has conceded he cant control the game through other means
