I was watching the replay of the Crusaders vs Blues game on YouTube before and I know you lot all like to bag out about McCheat and yes I'm a Quade hating Kiwi just like the next person but there is something I might have to agree on (and it's not the onside/offside rule)

I noticed several times during scrummaging, Richie was "sling shotting" when the number 8 is not set/bound into the scrum and launches himself forward at the engage call...

Now the last time I checked and was up for discussion at club rugby recently - thats illegal in Australia, but in NZ? Well....

Was he sling shotting in the sense that he was back on his heels with his arms at full extension and his head out of the scrum or was he merely "leading the hit" from the back?

RugbyReg, good point and good explanation.
However as shown in Austin's video (bar one episode with Radike Samo) all the 8s were bound with head between the Locks. None of the time, did Austin ever reference to slingshotting, where they do push on engage, by bringing back and then pushing forward the locks.

McCaw was doing that his head completely up (& visible on numerous occasions), and this is where my personal experience comes in, because a few weeks ago at Club Rugby we were penalised for slingshotting.

Gagger - I already feel dirty for even bringing this up!

The first one. I had to replay several times to see what he was doing was an illegal move.

Considering the number of responses to this thread, I think he has been left well alone.
A big "meh" from me.
