Lealiifano, To'omua sign on for two more years

CA Brumbies playmakers Christian Lealiifano and Matt To'omua have re-signed with the ACT province until 2012.

Lealiifano joined the CA Brumbies in 2007 before making his Investec Bank Super 14 debut the following year against the Crusaders in Christchurch. The Auckland-born, Melbourne-raised pivot wore the ‘10’ jersey through 2008 and 2009, before starring for the CA Brumbies at inside centre through the first six rounds of this season.

The 22-year-old, who has represented Australia at Schools, Under 19’s, Under 21’s and Sevens, has played 28 Investec Bank Super 14 matches for the CA Brumbies, crossing for seven tries in that time.

Lealiifano, who will sit out the remainder of the 2010 Investec Bank Super 14 with a knee injury, says he’s pleased that his future is with the CA Brumbies.

“The main thing for me was that I’m really happy here,” he said. “There’s a good group here at the moment to take the team forward. There’s a good mix of young guys and experienced guys, especially with players like Matt Giteau and Adam Ashley-Cooper around me.

“I feel like my game’s come a long way since I’ve been here – there’s still room for a lot of improvement but playing with guys like Gits has really helped me.

“It’s been a good challenge moving to ‘12’, I was really enjoying it and thought I was playing quite well. It’s been great learning outside Gits and having the chance to keep playing with one of the world’s best helped make the decision for me.

“I think that staying here has given me every chance of eventually playing for the Wallabies. That was a big part of my decision to stay: this was where I thought I could develop my game best with a goal of one day being a Wallaby. It’s still a long-term goal for me and I’m just looking to keep developing my game. If I can play some quality footy with the Brumbies hopefully that will come.”

To'omua, who will start at flyhalf for the CA Brumbies against the Cheetahs tomorrow night, has played 17 matches for the ACT province since being contracted directly from Brisbane State High in 2007. The former Australian Schools and Under 20’s flyhalf made his Investec Bank Super 14 debut as an 18-year-old in 2008, and was selected for his first Wallaby Spring Tour last year.

To'omua, now 20, says he would love to further his Wallaby representation but his sole focus is finishing the season strongly for the CA Brumbies.

“I just love it down here,” he said. “My game’s developed a lot since I’ve been at the Brumbies and I’m confident this is the place to take my game even further in the next few years.

“I wouldn’t have signed if I wasn’t happy with the Brumbies or the direction we’re heading, and I’m very pleased that I’ll continue to be a part of that.

“Making the Wallabies squad was great last year but I can only worry about the Brumbies at the moment and hopefully [further Wallaby representation] will come a bit later. I’ve still only started a handful of games at provincial level so I’m not getting too far ahead of myself; I just want to focus on putting some good performances together this season.”

Head Coach Andy Friend says he’s pleased to re-sign two of his key performers through until 2012.

“It’s a great result to have two of the country’s leading young talent returning to the side for the next two years,” he said.

“There’s no question they’ve both benefited from playing and training alongside someone like Matt Giteau, and in time Christian and Matt will form a very dangerous 10/12 combination for the Brumbies.

“We were very disappointed to see Christian’s season end the way it did through injury. He was outstanding for the side through the first half of the season. He’s made a very successful transition to inside centre this year, he’s been a proven match-winner for the side in the past three seasons and has the perfect skill set to be a leading inside back in this competition.

“He’ll come back from this injury fitter and more determined next season and we’re very pleased that he’ll continue to be a part of our backline.

“As he did last season, Matt’s made the most of his opportunities in the starting line-up this year. He’s a very focused and composed individual, who has come a long way physically in the last few years. He’s got a tremendous kicking and passing game and with each match continues to grow in confidence. His selection on the Wallaby tour last year was no accident and he’s certainly a player with a big future.”

Brumbies Rugby CEO Andrew Fagan says the retention of the two rising stars augurs well for the future of the CA Brumbies.

“It’s a great result for the CA Brumbies that two of the best young inside backs in the country are keen to stay in Canberra,” he said. “Given their ability and the form they’ve shown this season, it was no surprise that there was significant interest from elsewhere. However, we’re very pleased that both Christian and Matt both see their futures with the CA Brumbies. We’d love to see that loyalty repaid with on-field success at the provincial level and their hard work and ability rewarded with higher representative honours.”

The Reds better tie up Cooper pretty damn quick otherwise the Rebels will throw millions at him. They need a legitimate Wallaby signing and a flyhalf pronto.

Please change this thread title to "Good news for the Brumbies". ;)

People will cry about this but Gits will leave after next year I imagine and these blokes will form the 10/12 combo for years to come at the Brumbies.

I think 2012 is shaping up to be the Rebels year. After players like BOD and other big name figures have spent there time in their national team, and will want to move abroad. Cipriani moved only because he wants to improve himself as a player, and the Southern Hemisphere will certainly help him achieve so.

I think Gits will definitely piss off, he wants big cash abroad, and he'll get it. I think he feels as well that his time would have certainly passed in the Wallabies fold.

Yep chief, the Rebels will be a bit hamstrung in getting quality players from the European clubs because of the RWC, but there will be a few that will come for 2012 after it is over. As I've mentioned a few times: it would have been better for a 5th Oz team to start the year after a RWC rather than the year it is on - but there was no choice in the matter.

Likewise there may be a couple of European club players who hang out for the 2012 Lions tour and come for 2013.

Gits may not be interested in playing against the Lions as it may be one year too many to get the best value for his last contract. We can't complain if he goes as he would have done his bit.

In that context we can see why the two young fellows stayed on with the Brumbies even though we thought, for the sake of 2011 only probably, that it would be better for Oz rugby if one went to the Force or the Rebels. They are old enough in the head to know Gits wouldn't be around for a long time and young enough, especially Matt, that waiting a bit won't matter. Christian had already superseded Tyrone Smith for the 12 spot anyway.

I forsee 10. To'omua and 12. Lealiifano on the Brumbies team sheet for a long time.

I'm a little irked by not getting C. Lealiifano. How are the Rebels meant to become a credible side when their locally developed talent doesn't want to come home.

Sigh.

It's inevitable that any player will want to stay in his team if he has a good career path with it and is exposed to an atmosphere of excellence and success.

There have been a few Victorian boys come through the schools system since pro rugby startedand gone to other franchises, not a lot, but the main thing will be the future. Just as the Force is keeping a majority of its locals so the Rebels will hold onto most of theirs.

To'omua loves Canberra too much to leave. The Brumbies have looked after him well, especially after what happened last year with the Shawn Mackay incident. He did have some other offers on the table both locally and from overseas and was considering them as recently as last week but the Brumbies got the prize signing.

Lealiifano had a tougher decision and Melbourne made no secret of trying to sign him. He's been in the starting team for a while now and knows the structures and system that are in place here and as we know a happy footballer is easier to negotiate with. The fact that he's been playing along side Giteau, he feels that has improved his game.

This news pleases me greatly - looking forward to seeing how they develop over the next few years. Alightly unrelated matter - there is an article in the Canberra Times today about the local sevens comp - and there is a picture of Lix Lealiifano who plays for the Vikings.

I'm assuming they are related - anyone know how? And is he any good?

Lealiifano will see the game well from the bench next season.

I have real mixed emotions about this news. Great for the Brumbies succession planning and potentially for Wallaby depth development in key positions.

However I'm now in Melbourne and I think securing these two talented S14 starters and fringe Wallabies, both with Melbourne roots, would have been awesome for the Rebels. They are definately going to struggle to put together a competitive roster for 2011 now and will have to start targetting the acedemies more.

Going off on a tangent, I just read a post on Fox Sports suggesting Gits to Wallaby fullback, which allows Cooper to be protected defensively by Barnes at IC and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) at outside, with Ioane and Hynes on the wings. Whilst I actually think JOC (James O'Connor) has a better kicking game (in play and off the ground) than Gits, I think this could be worth a try. It might reinvigorate Gits and provide the best midfield defensive balance. It will give us a great armoury of playmakers (Cooper, Barnes and Gits), kickers (ditto) and line breakers (AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Ioane, Gits, Hynes). Sorry to threadjack!

Doubtful. He wouldn't have been far off a Wallaby squad birth if his earlier season form continued.

If he was uninjured I think he would probably be wearing 15 this week and not Hux.

It's crazy that Giteau will leave at the end of the 2011 WC, but it seems like it will be on the cards. He will be barely 29 years old by then, and you would think still has a number of years left to offer the Brumbies and Wallabies.

The age that professionals start their international career seems to me to be getting younger and the age in which they finish it is becoming younger too, with the Euro, Yen or Pound too good to refuse. Seems an age since we had Gregan, 33, Larkham, 33, and Latham, 32, playing for the Wallabies.

Bit of a blow to Australian Rugby to not have the talent spread around. I don't blame the Brumbies though.

The Canberra and Struggletown Brumbies are excellent at retaining their poached talent. They must have excellent facilities and support services, first to attract and second to keep happy their players away from their homes and loved ones.

Its a pity, as I've been a fan of To'omua pretty much every time I've seen him play (except the broken jaw incident) and would have loved to have him playing 10 for Melbourne. But, it seemed less and less likely as time went on.

Just means that someone else will have to stand up.

yeah, I can understand them both staying, but would've loved one of them at least to leave.

A good chance for Jono Lance possibly?
