As Josh Rakic tries to cover his ass regarding the player exodus he throws in an interesting tidbit at the end of this article:

Union officials act speedily on revelations of exodus

February 6, 2011
THE Australian Rugby Union has taken quick steps to stem a mass player exodus, holding emergency talks with at least six Wallabies stars and as many as three more who are a signature away from defecting to European rugby.

The Sun-Herald revealed two weeks ago that some of the code's biggest names - including Matt Giteau, Dean Mumm, Luke Burgess, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Drew Mitchell and Stephen Moore - were on the verge of finalising deals with clubs in France.

With these clubs looking to finalise their rosters unusually early in mid-February, ARU officials were caught on the hop during their annual holidays.

But The Sun-Herald can reveal ARU chief executive John O'Neill and Wallabies coach Robbie Deans have been holding meetings thick and fast as pressure mounts on officials to secure the bulk of the youthful playing roster - with most off-contract after this year's World Cup - before it affects the Wallabies' World Cup preparation.

As reported, Stephen Moore had all but agreed to join Paris's Racing Metro a fortnight ago, but a late play by the Brumbies and ARU have helped the Wallabies secure their first re-signing victory.

''Guys like Stephen Moore had some pretty good offers in Paris and France but there's obviously a few weeks of uncertainly before the deal is finalised and in that time, the last couple of weeks, franchises and the ARU have come into play and sorted things right out,'' a well-placed source told The Sun-Herald.

''The ARU has been lucky in that the French clubs sort of milled around a bit for a week or so there.''

The Sun-Herald understands at least one Wallaby has since committed to a European club in 2011, while several more are now mulling counter-offers from the governing body and are expected to make decisions on their playing futures as soon as tomorrow.

''The ARU have certainly got things going in the past two weeks,'' another well-placed source said.

''Things have progressed with several players, at least six and maybe a few more, while Stephen Moore just re-signed.''

The ARU has made it clear it is desperate to re-sign the majority of its off-contract stars.

"Clearly we want to retain our best talent and are aware of the need to start discussions in a World Cup year earlier than usual,'' an ARU spokesman said. ''We are being vigilant on the retention side.''

The ARU can thank Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan for the retention of Moore and, almost certainly, Adam Ashley-Cooper.

Several well-regarded pundits envisage Fagan as the ideal replacement for the off-contract O'Neill at season's end should the ARU boss choose to step
aside.

Would there be any truth to such a rumour?

How do people rate Fagan from a business point of view?

Despite the Brumbies' on field results he seems to have done a good job of attracting players (or in this case getting players to stay), and boosting the Brumbies profile...

Thats assuming JON will be leaving the role any time soon... rumors are that he is negotiating to stay on longer

Secondly, player recruitment/retention at super rugby level is in reality a very small topic when looking at whether he should succeed JON..

More to do with the article than Fagan, I noticed this article this morning and immediately thought back the the authors previous article. Arse covering is dead on.

surely moore and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) wouldnt be staying without an ARU contract, so both JON and Fagan would have to be involved in retention wouldnt they?

and on top of it all. i put Fagan with Pocock in having names that shouldnt be leaders of the sport in this country.

What a load of dross, Rakic nearly says it was his bullshit article of a couple of weeks ago was the impetus of these guys staying.

I always thought Paris was in France. Is this not the case?

Why is it that Sydney's premier newspaper employs its most ignorant reporters/sub-editors on Rugby. You'd think they would put their cadets and cadet sub-editors on league, most of whose followers are less concerned with literacy and a world game. Following on Growden's latest piece of faux-journalism it leaves sites like this as the only place to go (see Bruce's comments on another thread with which I agree. I would be willing to bet that Growden doesn't get the irony involved in Bruce's comment).

Fagan's got a fair bit on his plate in Canberra. One of the biggest projects is building the Brumbies a proper training/admin facility as the current one is by far the worst in all of Australia professional sporting codes.
Too many NIMBY's at the present location are making it hard to progress anything.
I think he would want to at least see this project through before trying anything else.

And off topic, but with regards to a bad headline, surely this would win a prize...

I remember Rakic as a cadet journalist when I was living in Noosa, I submitted articles publicising my outrigger canoeing club's activities and dealt with him when he was working for Noosa News...

I was pretty suprised to see him making the big jump up to SMH as I thought his articles in the local paper wasn't all that great...

Short for "Not In My BackYard". A term used for protest at putting some item of essential, but not very nice, development close to someone's house; thereby reducing real estate values of said house.

Thanks for that.

God I hope they do something with the place. I really would love some proper change rooms and facilities at Griffith oval...
