Well done to the ABs. hope they can do the same next week so that the boks are nicely served up on a platter for July 24.

The Bakkies headbutt!

Whoa I missed that. Was it as bad in real time as it looks slowed down?

Missed first half but geez the AB intensity was really a step up from any other game this year. Aus will need some divine intervention to mount a serious challenge.

In retrospect the Boks limited themselves to the centre of the field; Olivier, Fourie and De Villiers were never going to get around anyone, and the ABs went around them at will. Funnelled the Boks into the AB pack that hunted as a unit.

The gameplan required them to bully the Blecks and they didn't get close.

It was off the ball and within the first minute. I think it was Botha who was held back off the ball following a kick and this was the end result.
What made this worse was the fact it was replayed 3-4 times on the stadium big screen and got the expected response from the Auckland crowd.

Holding back is no justification for an intentional head butt.
Every times Botha goes there are many who state 'it's part of the game, just tough rugby' etc etc
The guy is a serial thug and every time he is involved there is intent.
There is no place in the game for him.

ABs intensity throughout was awesome. They made their tackles (and were dominant in contact), they were aggressive and clinical at the breakdown, and didn't give the Boks any space.

The Boks front row was generally too high, and hence were often under pressure.

Steyn did not enjoy the lack of time and space. Januarie is not even close to FdP, and there must surely be better options available.

The Boks erred in not pushing for tries when the ABs gave away penalties due mostly to Bok pressure.

With Botha suspended, and with the big wake up call in Auckland, they will come back - even better with Matfield or Burger as captain (although Smit was strong around the park, his throwing and, more importantly, decision making was poor).

The game was a really good one, and I bet next week will be even better. The ABs have shown the way to beat the Boks, unfortunately for the Wallabies I'm drawing a blank on how we can replicate the ABs' game plan, nor how we'll roll the ABs.

Good call Riddler. Nine weeks actually.

NZ Herald

Bakkies Botha has been suspended for nine weeks for head-butting New Zealand halfback Jimmy Cowan in last night’s Tri-Nations rugby test at Auckland.

It means Botha will miss the remainder of defending champion South Africa’s Tri-Nations programme.

The punishment was handed down by Sanzar judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan in Auckland today after Botha was cited for striking with the head, following a tackle on Cowan.

The incident was missed by Irish referee Alan Lewis but Botha was later sinbinned for a professional foul and New Zealand scoring a try during his 10-minute absence.

Wheelahan said Botha admitted the charge, expressed remorse and had apologised to Cowan.

Wheelahan said he deemed the offence to be in the middle range of seriousness, but he also took into account Botha’s record for previous offending.

Botha has been suspended from all rugby up to and including September 4, the same date as the Springboks’ final Tri-Nations test, against Australia at Bloemfontein.

Thank god! There is no way South Africa can find another huge agressive second rower like Botha!

Is there?

Yeah, I'm sure he was. Bekker is probably more of a threat, with less of the unnecessary stuff.

I don't know how many times I have to say this - Botha's replacement is Danie Rossouw. Bekker is the Matfield prototype.

Gutted and disappointed, cant see us standing up after this hiding. No positive to take to the second test and dont know where to start. All Blacks dominate all phases and not even FdP could have save us this time. Only good news is that Juan & Brussouw will be back for the home leg.

PB. If you think that was bad news for the Bok supporters, how do you think we Wallaby supporters feel? We play the Blix after they have a week off to rest up while we go 15 rounds with a bunch of blokes who will be looking for someone to bash up just to get rid of the pent up anger at themselves.

Hartman I think Bekker has shown enough physicality to be considered for a start but Rossouw will start because of the combination he has with Matfield. Two years ago I would never have started Bekker at 4 but I think he can do the job.

Terrible tactics, no physicality, a useless halfback, the wrong 12 at 12, and the right 12 at 14, the right 14 on the bench, the right 3 on the bench and the wrong one starting.

Oh and the captain is too fat and slow.

Change that, throw in a huge mother of a kitchen sink and we're fucking dandy guv.

Two years ago I would never have started Bekker at 4 but I think he can do the job. I disagree, Bekker is not nearly the presence defensively or at the breakdown that Rossouw (or Botha) is.

I think we need to find a new 3 altogether, Beej has not impressed me one bit, especially not in comparison to Gurthro's efforts at Loosehead. But yep, I already stated my issues with the selections in the backline. Worried about Kirchner too.

Oh and the captain is too fat and slow. Yep I don't think he is good enough of a captain to warrant keeping him in the side anymore really... Matfield would make a perfect captain as someone who leads by example as well as having good leadership skills. Maybe too close to the WC to make the change now though, and it certainly wasn't justifiable last year given the Boks' form.

Change that, throw in a huge mother of a kitchen sink and we're fucking dandy guv.
