"WHEREVER the ball is, we should be ... don't stand and take pictures of it.'' That was one of the key messages delivered to the Wallabies squad by Grand Slam-winning coach Alan Jones when he addressed the Australian players last night.
Twenty-two years after he was last in charge of the Australian team, Jones was back in the fold, motivating the current squad in the way only he can after accepting an invitation from current coach Robbie Deans.
It was as if the man who guided the Australian team to their historic victories back in 1984 had never been away as he spoke with his characteristic verve to a captive audience.
"Unless the selectors are dopes, which they are not, then you can't make an Australian team without having ability,'' Jones said.
"When you have this talent you have to say, 'We are going to express this talent'. We tend at times to be too frightened, too timid - and too worried about mistakes.''
Jones told the players the only thing that can cause any damage on the field is the football.
"If you have got it you are under no pressure at all unless you fail to use it sensibly,'' he said. "The ball is the bank. If we can control our own ball - hello, the other mob are in some trouble.''
Jones emphasised the simplicity of the game and told the players they should use the width of the field to their own advantage.
"Make it a game for athletes because we are athletes and we should have people in support everywhere,'' he said.
"Let their big fat forwards run around because our forwards are always more mobile ... use the whole paddock, get the forwards out of the backline - their job is to win ball.
"If you work in such a way that your backside is dragging on the ground [exhausted] when you go inat halftime then you can rest assured if you're not in front they won't be too far in front of you.''
The Wallabies, who have experienced tough times recently, could learn some lessons from Jones about fighting back from adversity after the way he has overcome recent health problems. And he said the team could achieve their goals on this tour.
"You have to go out on the paddock and say, 'We are going to try to win, we are not going to wait for the others to lose','' he declared.
Insight like this you can get from the local pub.
I am a bit worried by what was meant by "captive audience"
