Great work. Some quality names there. For those that remember, was Turpin a quality schoolboy rugby player? Didn’t even realise he went to Eddies.

Who does everyone thinks the best chance at winning if played in term 3. This season would’ve been one of the closest yet in my opinion. Each team had at least 1 standout back and 1 standout forward. Marist had the strongest with Nick Baker and Floyd Aubrey, both QLD players u16 2019. Villa had Hamish Muir(representative) and Ollie Harris. Lauries had John Bryant( Qld u16s 2019) and Harry Farimbella. Padua had Poasi Manu (Mal meninga cup 2019,2020) and the tait Rogers (Mal cup captain 2020). Iona has Charlie KWS (Wynnum mal Cup) and Anthony Pepe also apart of the mal cup team. Peters had Australian schoolboy Keynan Tauakipulu and John Riddel(QLD league). Pats and Eddies both had pretty weak sides this year and I think would’ve found it hard to find success

Was just looking over some old files of the aic rugby over the passed decade and I think it’s fair to say the 2015 Padua College undefeated side where the team of the decade. Out of this side there where a number of boys who have went on to find success in top grade footy including:

Michael wood: Queensland Reds (year 11, 2015)
Liam Usher: Australian u20s, brothers premier grade( year 11, 2015)
Tom o Toole: Ireland 6 nations squad (year 11 2015)
Lawson Creighton: Queensland reds Academy, Aus u20s (year 12,2015)
Jack peoples: Easts Intrust super cup (year 12 2015)

At this stage Padua also had Michael cheer( parramatta eels u20s), Harry Fox (Australian schoolboys) and Danny Heenan (Broncos academy) coming through the system.

That 2015 team was a standout. And Wood and Usher backed it up in 2016. Their forward pack pummeled everyone.
The other standout teams in the decade were probably Iona (2013) and Villa (2010).

But if a 2020 (5 years hence) success measure of the mighty Padua 2015 team is relevant, you might wait until 2024 to assess the Ashgrove team of 2019 many of whom also played in the undefeated First XIII AIC Rugby League premiership. People shouldn't forget that their First XV didn't have their line crossed until the second half of their round 5 match v Villa. They were in second gear when they put more than 40 on Pats in round 2.

I understand that in Clubland, the plan, subject to Govt ratification, is:
  • small group no contact on 18 May,
  • full training on 8 June and
  • games on 4 July (all subject to curve remaining relatively flat)

With the news on the commencement of trainings I think it’s time to start getting back into predictions. This could be a really close AIC season due to the majority of the teams having some big names.
Iona: Iona will be a strong side this year with mal meninga cup boys Anthony Pepe and Charlie KWS returning for another season of first 15.
Pats- will struggle this year due to the size of their team and the depth in comparison to other schools however still have rep u16 players including jack booker returning.
Peters: Peters have always struggled in this age group however with the inclusion of Kenyan Tapukiolo, Aus schoolboy could well easily be the underdogs.
Villa: have found success in this age group going 3 peat premiers from year 7 to 9 however will not match size in comparison to some other schools. Will be a great battle getting to see Hamish Muir Vs Floyd Aubrey.
Marist: Marist are definitely the favourites with massive names like nick baker and Floyd Aubrey returning for their last season, they also have a stacked backline.
Padua: the boys in the brown and gold will have a massive pack this year with returning big men Poasi Manu and Jaidyn Walker. Also have more depth in the backs with the inclusion of the 2 Lomu brothers new to the school.
Lauries: Will have a solid team yet again taking out the 10As comp last year combined with the power of John Bryant and Lance Davies.
Eddies- straight up shit

It will be a close comp, but do we know for certain the powers to be have decided on rugby for term 3? I have not heard this is a definite.

Also, If rugby does get the nod, Padua seems to be shaping up as the real dark horse. Will have very big pack, along with the above mentioned names there is Whippy in the front row and Max Johnson in the 2nd row, both Qld u16 reps. Johnson in particular will have a big impact this year. Does anyone have mail on the Lomu boys, and where they came from?

The boys are back at training in 4 weeks so it’s obviously not certain if they will get the ok to play and I’d say it will be a shortened season. the Lomu boys are cousins with Poasi Manu First 15 number 8 from 2019. Padua have a number of players with credentials against there name including:
Tait Rogers: Mal Meninga cup Norths captain 2020
Poasi Manu: SEQ rugby league, Mal cup 2019,2020
Max Johnson: Qld u16s
Lachie Whippy: QLD u16s
Topuaki Loki: Mal Meninga cup squad
Jaidyn Walker: Junior gold cup

Agree it should be close comp. as I have said before Ash deserve to be favourites. It may sound crazy given the touch up they got last year but I think Iona are potential giant killers.

I'm hearing that things are firming towards a conference style system played over 4 weeks in Term 3...can anyone confirm?

For some entertainment and to keep the boys motivated MCA have been releasing on youtube a classic game each week (2:15 Saturdays). Last weeks one was an absolute corker, 1989 TAS GF of Ash v SLC. The camera work is shoddy at best, but without a doubt the highlight is the very biased commentary team of 2 Ash boys. Some classic quotes in there. Had fun
watching it with my boys, they were amazed at the speed scrums were set, the one hand throwing into the dockyard brawl that passed as a lineout, the indiscrimate rucking of anyone caught loitering with intent etc... enough to bring a tear to the eye of any old timer. Enjoy.

The game was so much better when the focus was on the maul and not the ruck!!

Absolutely. Ball carrier turns in the tackle, nearest team mate rips the ball, next 2 in block each side, half back takes ball at waist height and pass to 5/8 or lazy runner. Clean and simple. Did that drill thousands of times at training, all backs and forwards could do it blind folded. Then the rules changed so everyone became too scared to risk a scrum turnover so take the ball to ground every bloody breakdown.

Yep none of this 25 phases moving 2 meters forward or backwards with players diving at the feet of the defenders and runners facing a static straight line of 12 at the last feet It is boring the the old fans and doing nothing to attract new viewers.

Funny that recent post recalled an old TAS Grand Final .....AIC is off to a Grand final this year.
A late start 2 pool round robin then each team faces the opposite pool position in the last game. Youll need to win all 3 or it will go to countback...for and against presumable...1. ASH SEC PAD SPC 2. VILLA SLC IONA SPLC

Structure of the competitions

Term 3, Season 1

Tennis and Basketball

Saturday 18 July – Saturday 8 August

The first season will commence on Saturday 18 July and conclude with a round of finals on Saturday 8

August. The schools will be broken into two pools of four schools. The first three weeks will be a roundrobin

with each team in the pool. The last round (8 August) will be against the College ranked the same

in the other pool. The finals fixtures will be played in age groups and hosted by each College. Year 5 &

6 teams will compete on Friday afternoon as usual starting 17 July and finishing on 7 August. There

will not be a finals round for these age groups.

Term 3, Season 2

Rugby Union, Football and Chess

Saturday 15 August – Saturday 12 September

The week starting 10 August will be set aside for trial rounds. As the EKKA holiday has moved to Friday,

some trials may be held on this day. The first rounds for these sports will commence on Saturday 22

August and conclude with a finals round on Saturday 12 September. These sports will be run in the

same format as basketball and tennis. The later starting dates will also allow the contact sports to be

best prepared for competition. Chess will follow the same format and again be played on Friday

afternoon as usual. There will be no finals for age groups in Grades 5 & 6.

Term 3

Cross Country

At this stage, the Cross Country Championships will be held on Wednesday 12 August. The

championships will be held at either Limestone Park or Curlew Park depending on the booking

schedule at Limestone. These championships will be further reviewed closer to the date so that any

changes to the Queensland Government’s directives can be included in the planning.

Term 3

Rugby League

The AIC is also considering offering a carnival style competition for rugby league during the first week

of the September holidays (21-23 September). However, this is still in the planning stages and more

information will be given after further consideration.

At this stage, the Track and Field Championships will still be held on 9th & 10th October (Term 4). These

championships will also be further reviewed closer to the date so that any changes to the Queensland

Government’s directives can be included in the planning. There will be some Track and Field preseason

competitions held at the end of term 3 if practical and venues are available.

Sport as a vehicle for Student well-being, enjoyment and building character

The AIC has endeavoured to stay true to its mission of providing well-organized competitions in sport

that foster participant engagement and pride in communities in a holistic Christian context. This has

meant that any decisions based around spectators will be focussed on student participation and

involvement rather than those of adults. We are also very aware that this year is quite different to any

other and the Year 12 students will be feeling this more than most in the context of sport. We

acknowledge that sport offers a microcosm view of the real effects of COVID-19 in the broader

community and this opportunity allows the students to demonstrate their resilience and make the

most of being able to compete in competition once again, while managing the risks associated with

the COVID-19 situation.

Yours in fellowship

Hey TP, got the AIC info on the make up of the comp but didn't mention the actual pools as you have. Where did you get this info from?
