AIC Rugby 2019

Iona defeated Canterbury College by around 50 to 10 in the first round of the Ballymore Cup. Looked to be a second string Iona team. Forwards were not very dominant and handling was at times ordinary. Iona lost a winger to a knee or ankle injury early on and the halfback came off with an arm injury but other than that seemed to come through unscathed. Will need to step up if they are to challenge Padua this afternoon. Kwok Sun Barker didn’t play, Plath wasn’t there either so could be a number of changes for the next game.

Iona defeated Padua 22/17. Certainly not a convincing win with both teams showing glimpses of their strengths with Iona having slicker backs and Padua the dominant pack size. Both teams seemed to be using the match as a trial with players being swapped around. Will be interesting to see how both of these teams progress tomorrow.

St Laurence's won both games however the team needs major work if they are to compete with iona and ashgrove this season

Who do they play tomorrow?

1. Iona v Eddie's
2. Laurie's v Padua
3. SCGS v Siena
4. Rocky Grammar v Ambrose Treacy

Winners progress to afternoon (1v4, 2v3) with final on Saturday. All AIC final a fair possibility.

St Edmunds are playing with more spirit and may challenge some of the other schools this war. Lauries have certainly started to improve and it looks like they will be nearer the top than the bottom this year. Padua have been disappointing in the Ballymore Cup but didn’t look to be at full strength so should improve. Peters won’t challenge for the championship this year. Iona has been below the form they showed at Suncorp against Pats. They also have lost a number of players through injury over the course of the Cup with at least one being season ending and a nasty knockout today. Depth could be a problem for Iona if they were to lose too many of the starting team. Early days but I’m thinking Ashgrove, Iona and Lauries will fight it out and you can never discount Padua. Peters and Villa to fight for the wooden spoon with Eddies finishing ahead of Pats. Saturday’s Ballymore Cup final between Iona and Lauries will be a good prelude to the season.

Iona struggled badly with injuries against a strong Lauries side. Game ended with 3 reserve forwards playing in the backline. Some serious injuries for Iona with 10 of the 25 squad unable to either play or finish the game. As mentioned Iona will struggle if the numbers aren’t there and I’d say they’ve already had 3 or 4 season ending injuries. Some glimpses of good work but a long way behind Lauries who would now have to be favourites with the unknown being Ashgrove.

Nothing like an Iona supporter, claiming the major injury card in the pre season.....going to be a long season.

In case it wasn’t clear congrats to Lauries on a well deserved win. At the same time my point is valid; Iona ended up playing with 3 forwards on the backs and ten of the initial 25 squad injured. Several of these are serious and will test the depth of talent. If you were there you would have seen the decimated team and this will have a season changing impact. It will be great if Lauries can continue the improvement from the appalling state of their recent rugby and hopefully get their old boys back into a positive frame of mind. For Rugby to be strong Lauries has to come back from the wilderness and irrespective of the Iona injuries the result was a good one. Let’s hope Lauries can do it when it matters and do well in the AIC championship.

Seems Lauries might have a team to contend this season. Assuming most of their First XV played in the final, how many year 11s?

Hoping Iona boys recover quickly and are ready for the competition.

Sydney School Barker College was to play St Patrick's last week - Does anyone know the score. I heard a cricket score but can't verify.
I believe Barker play MCA this week which seems a bit odd considering how close to Easter it is and who will be available in the middle of holidays.
