I’ll be interested to see who the 2 are from Padua? On paper, that’d have 3 def’s....perhaps some have made themselves unavailable??

Are rugby league aligned/contracted players ineligible? Think I recall a few GPS boys with league allegiances not getting picked last year.

If that is the case with AIC - then that would count out a few Iona Backs.

Situation in last ( and previous ) years may have been low desire and / or scheduling conflicts

Not officially but those playing Confro are effectively ineligible because the National Champs are in the same week as Confro meaning they would be trailing for a spot which they are not going to be taking anyway. It could be assumed that a large portion of players particularly from Iona and Ashgrove have opted for the week of league training over the schools trials. Possibly this is a negative attitude but I imagine most of them rate their chance of making a Q1, Q2 or CS side pretty low justifying the decision.

Also yes traditionally those who have made it clear they wont be sticking with the rugby pathway after school are not picked in sides which is very reasonable as its taking away the opportunity from a committed boy.

Yes surprise too but they did beat Iona by 20 point away from home. Iona only 3? Oh dear

Yes they did, but MCA also beat SPC by a descent margin at SPC's big Old Boys Home Day and also MCA kept SPC scoreless in the second half without a couple of their better players on the paddock - Hienke. Tennysonwoods came on for maybe 5 minutes.

Thanks. That all makes sense. Personally, I agree with idea of only picking those with genuine intentions to pursue rugby but in saying that it can be a grey area. Sounds like the schedule forces the boys to make a decision one way or the other which is probably a good thing.

By the sound of it Lachy Tennison-Woods hasn't played a full AIC game for MCA this season, after injuring his thumb in the trial v SLC - is this correct?

I'd regard LTW as the best back in the AIC, so his absence will have had a big impact on MCA's performance this year.

Anyway, if it's right that MCA only has 6 boys in the AIC squad, my guess would be 1,3,4,5 and 10/15 plus LTW (if fit).

If it's also right that SPC has 11 players in the squad something has gone seriously wrong, but l'll wait for the announcement before commenting further.

I'd be amazed if MCA only got six in and LTW was omitted for any reason. He decimated us every single year in Club Football and when the Club Rugby split into two mini rounds he disappeared to League and instantly was a hit there. He played Qld 1 last two years in rugby and was probably the best back in the 2017 comp. He played MM for Norths Broncs at 16. He trains in the same under 18 reds as our kids, so why would you risk losing another player. He's only 16 or 17 and at school, why would he need to make a decision mid year. He can't vote, drink, and he's still under 17 i think. He just happens he's a good footy player as well as a nice kid when he isn't playing us. The same goes for Rozka - same age, a great running forward, a damn nice kid and a great footballer. in any code. Do we scrap heap him as well at 16 or 17. Is there a plethora of better kids missing out, there isn't. Take Plath out of Iona and they were good but not great. Take Maritz out of SPC and ditto because the rest of their backline aren't that great. Take Heenan and Fox out of Padua, double ditto. Villa have their Easts RL boys as well. What do they say about Friends and Enemies ? What code do you think half these boys on GPS scholarships were playing, one guess, here's another hint, it wasn't AFL or Football.

Just heard on the wire Villa had 3 reps for AIC
#3 Tyreece Felu
#8 James Livingstone
#11 Joshua Jacobson (scored 5 tries against Padua)

Seems reasonable that these boys made it but don’t know whether they are preferred starters or part of the wider squad

The worry with the Met format is you just end up picking the same players each year because they were there in u12, u14 etc. The current system is good for AIC because it allows a player to prove themselves over the season. Met format will be a trial with selections based on body shape and reputations.

You're dead right Blindside - they were exactly like you describe and some kids found it harder to be not selected than those who deserved a look.
