Would have to agree. Wrattan played #6 all last year for MCA firsts but they trialled him at centres on the weekend against Lauries.. He's definitely not a centre so could be a weakness for MCA.. fairly sure he was just filling a hole left by Renouf though.. If he returns id be happy to say Ashgrove to get home comfortably. Back 3 for Ashgrove to be to quick

I agree, I also like the look of Jenkins and Rafter in the forwards. Overall it's a pretty committed pack. Very well balanced team in general. It could well be Ashgrove's premiership year.

Who is playing who in the trials this week? and who are the home teams?

Lauries are hosting Villanova at Runcorn this Saturday. Interesting to see that years 5-12 will be held there with the firsts kicking off at a later time of 2:15. I believe this will benefit the crowd numbers at firsts games this year if it carries on

Rafter didn't play in the trial against Lauries.. Not sure if he's back for Iona game. Did Jenkins play #6 in the trial?

There is a question mark over the defence ability of the wingers for Marist. Not sure about the fullback but it will be interesting to see them tested against the Iona backs,

Boys V Men today at the Iona V Marist game.
Dominant display all round especially from the Marist backs. The Marist set piece worked well all game long and their support play was superb.

Standout performers: De Flavvis (10), Bucknell (15), Gavin (4) and the 7 for MCA (not sure of name).

St Patrick's college vs Padua first XV
Pats came out hard and put some big hits on early. Padua too good in the forwards. 6 got binned for second week in a row. Pats had no go to, backs had no shape and were small in size. Padua won 30-3
Padua were still not at there best. They had a new 9 and 10 combination with the 10 against Iona playing fullback. 9 was too slow to breakdown and 10 went himself too many times and looks as if cannot kick. Number 12 hogged the ball all day which left 13 seem like he didn't play however looks very strong. Wings were quick. 15 looked as if he could be dangerous if more ball however didn't play well under pressure
Pats rested all there main players like the 9 and 8 but standouts were 1,2, 5 and 15
All playing strong and hit some of the bigger Padua boys
Should be a good game when rounds come by

Ashgrove vs Iona today at Ashgrove!
It was a cricket score, an embarrassing performance by Iona. they were dominated and absolutely outsmarted. Ashgroves 6,8,10,11,14,13,12 all played better then there opposite numbers. Ashgroves 9 and 10 combination ran laps around Iona's 10 and 12. Ashgrove to win this year without a doubt. Only positive for Iona is there number 7 wasn't playing and there number 15 will be vital against other teams in the competition especially if they want to win a game. Go Ash.

Think you a being far to kind Kyle, Iona was dreadfully. Apart from the first 2 to 3 mins there was no competition.
Ash look a very complete team and for them to be beaten, will take a huge effort.
Iona will have to pray for no injuries this year, the replacement players they used yesterday far far off the standard.

Does anyone know the result in the Lauries vs villa first game? I heard that Lauries got up in the end but does anyone know by how much and what happened throughout the game?

Watching the villa rugby program grow over the last few years, this would definitely be the strongest playing group, second only to that of the 2010 premiership side. With the 16As finishing third last year and a number of returning 1st XV players, the group seemed to have a lot of potential to cause a large number of upsets throughout the season against the top four sides.

After watching the trial against lauries on the weekend, it is quite obvious that there is a significant issue with the coaching staff. It was a shock to see that a number of top performing first XV players from 2015 have been left to punch on in the second fifteen, their places being taken by younger students clearly out of their depth at the first XV level.

Word is, at the beginning of the 2015 season, the coaches attempted to implement Wayne Bennett's inspired "No Dickhead Policy" although they seem to fail to lead by example.

It will be interesting what villa will do next in regard to this lack of coaching competency, a new position up for grabs in 2017 perhaps? Your move villa.

It was a trial. Too early to be disgruntled.

it takes a 1st and 2nds squad to run a successful 1stXV campaign. Coaches want to see who they have up their sleeves come injury time.
Maybe the first choice options had a good hit out the week before, maybe Villa had some pre-season hitouts with other non AIC schools via a rugby tour/camp. I'm not familiar with Villas programme at all but do get involved with selection trials at other places from time to time. Lots of considerations. Cheers

I can see some valuable points out of this footy dad. Ive heard some reports there have been a few hiccups with coaches. It will definently interesting if they take in new coaches coming into a tour to New Zealand next year Easter holidays. Regarding the younger students i believe its i just go to do with giving a few young players a bit of experience for following years to come (not necessarily playing during the season). I know that alot of year 11 players have played over the past few trails with even 3 or 4 grade 10's having a run. It will definentlybe interesting to see how villa rugby goes in the next few years with apparently a solid year 8 team coming through the ranks

A school is unlikely to sack a coach that is teaching good life lessons in accordance to the schools values.

St. Laurence's host Padua at Runcorn

Villanova host St. Peters at Villa Park

Hopefully some good contested games will happen

Padua is actually hosting St Laurence's at Banyo. It is Padua's 60th Year Anniversary so it will be a massive day and weekend for the college with the 1st XV game kicking off at 3:30. It is also the 'Back to Banyo' round where many Old Boys come out and support
