Rugby union and league are completely different games, agreed. Irrespective of the code, the team with most effective ball runners will go a long way to winning. The ashgrove vs pats game, pats had some good ball runners and some big boys - ashgrove combatted this by under commiting to the ruck to allow more numbers in the defensive line to attack these bigger runners and force turnovers and it worked. Anyone who saw the suncorp game would have noticed Lauries did a similar thing in defence and under commited at the breakdown to allow more numbers in defence to shut down the padua runners, and almost pulled it off. A good coach would have realised this and changed the point of attack to make lauries commit at the breakdown and lessen numbers in the defensive line, instead their runners kept running straight off the ruck into the awaiting defence (league style). Changing the tactics would have allowed their backs more space to attack. Theres an example of rugby smart tactics and not so rugby smart tactics.
