Mate we have been making some big strides but we are still a long way away from where we need to be. We kicked off this week and had good turnout a bit of an update:
· The U18s teams have been rebranded to 1st XV and 2nd XV
· The season is planned out and starting to lock in our trials
· We have brought in 5 coaches and a S&C coach across 2 teams and provided the players with an onsite gym, and a classroom where we will do some video review work.
· We are using Ipads to give players instant feedback.
· We have started an Elite player training program that will start in March to Oct to backend the Brumbies training Centre when that finishes for promising Tuggeranong players, which will be open for School and Club players 15-17yrs of age who have a bright future.
· The boys will start there weights program next week.
· We are working more closely with Erindale college TSP program to balance the players’ workload and ensure we are talking the same language.
· We are moving our 2XV into 2nd division to improve our depth rather than playing them in 3rd Div.
· All home games will be played under lights on Friday night or after 1st grade on the Saturday at Viking Park No.1 ground
· The 1st xv will have a jersey that stands them apart from senior and junior club
· The 1st xv will have a jumper presentation ceremony.

We have a lot of hard work in front of us to bridge the gap, but what I can tell you is players have been looking for something like this; we have players travelling from Gungahlin, Cooma, & Queanbeyan to be a part of this program.
However, it is not all roses, The rep 18s, 17s and BTC squads train the same nights. We have also missed out on a few recruits as local league clubs pay their players but only if they concentrate on league and raiders convince no.30 on their roster that they are still in their plans even though they missed the 25-player cut-off for SG Ball/Harold Matthews. We have other clubs trying to pick off our 14-15 year olds by promising to pay their rep fees. It is hard to compete when you don’t have runs on the board. But when we establish the program, produce two competitive sides, the development programs are in place and the boys are enjoying their rugby, then we will have more to offer.
This year is all about establishing a competitive and consitant force in 1st, 2nd, 3rd Xv's for the next 5 years.

Wow! It certainly sounds like Vikings are stepping up to the plate and if not this year, certainly in the years to come they will develop some very good systems and development which will see them become a real force to be reckoned with. Judging by this the traditionaly strong schools will have their work cut out for them to match Vikings and may even see students leaving in year 11 to get into the Vikings program!! Personally I hope that does not happen but if the Vikings program is a better one than the schools it is a possibility.

In any case it certainly looks like Vikings will press for a top four postion and with at least Marist, Eddies and by the sounds of things Dara going to be strong and the hope that that Grammar can back up or at least maintain a competitive side this years comp should be good viewing. Not sure where the other clubs/schools sit. My tip is Eddies to win it (that hurts admitting that) based on the numbers returning and their strong and victorious u16's. Marist will threaten but experience may be lacking.

From our point of view there will be no easy games this year, Uni norths and Wests are both going to be strong. There will be 5 teams fighting it out for 2 finals spots all stealing wins off each other. Just not sure who the 8th team will be? I suspect it will be Trinity.

Any idea on how Trinity might go if they return to the top flight? The last time they would have played 1st XV level would have been in their previous life as St Pats wouldn't it?

Thanks Guru, those selections only confirm my beleif that Eddies will be too strong this year. Where has Tomane come from and what year is he in?

The Marist team i named includes 7 ACT u16s players 2012, 1 ACT u17 player 2012 and 1 Raiders u18s SG ball player 2013, they will be strong also.

He is From QLD and was the 12 for the AUS u17s last year, He is 17 so i assume he is in year 12.

Have a read:

Hmmm curious to know why/how he chose eddies....very similar to Tyrone SMITH many years ago when he suddenly appeared at Eddies from Cromer High whilst his brother was at the Brumbies. Why does a guy who is already clearly immersed in the system need to change school and state for year 12?

Marist will indeed be very strong. Its just amazing how often a Smith or Tomane turns up at Eddies for yr 12 or yr 11 when Marist look like having a really strong team...

I am led to believe he simply moved down here to be with his brother and by word of mouth selected to go to Eddies. Both schools have had there fair share of new players joining the schools in years 10,11 and 12, some by coincidence and some not.

Either way, the next two years of 1st XV schoolsboys rugby in canberra is looking very strong.

Right you are Guru. Which of the Marist kids is playing with the Raiders?

I thought Eddies had stopped giving away music sholarships like they did with some of their old 1st XV players lol...

What is the relative strength of Canberra Marist? I ask as my old school St Gregory's College will be playing a trial against them. Don't know if they'll have their full strength line up for the game (depending if their dual code contingent are available) but would be interested in a brief run down.

Marist are always a strong side - through all age grades to 1st XV - not sure what they will be like this year though....

Sort of what it's like with Greg's. If they have a full contingent they can be really good, especially in the backs. They specialise in full length of the field tries. But if they don't it can be very sketchy. I guess I'll find out. My brother will be playing this year so I'll likely be there to witness first hand.

I hear Marist got thrashed 55-3 by Knox on the weekend. WOW! Thats a pizzling regardless of it being the first trial for the year. Could be a long year down at Pearce....I see that their 2nds and 16's also got thrashed. Does anybody know if they had any players missing or were they at full strength? According to the CAS forum one observer said they looked unfit! This seems incredible.

1st XV Lost 68-3
2nd XV Lost 40-0 (game called off at halftime due to an injury that required ambulance)
U16s lost 12-7 (Wouldn't call that a Thrashing?)
U15s won 27-15
U14s won 30-10

Marist 1sts were missing a fair few good players due to injury. which filters 2nds boys into 1sts and 3rds boys into 2nds. At Full strength with a few more weeks training under there belt they will be a different side and looking strong. Keep in mind Knox have been training since October last year and have a solid team.

Marist are playing there Div 2 sides against St Gregs this coming weekend. I believe u14s u15s u16s and senior squad are all 2nd div teams with the u13s playing their div 1 team.

How many were injured and how come they are carrying injuries already without having played a game? I am amazed Marist College Canberra would be willing to send teams away to one of the best Rugby schools in Sydney and face such a thrashing, its a little embarrasing really. Now they are a going to take on St Gregs with their 2nds? What are the 1sts going to be doing? Is really the way to get ready for the rest of their trials and then the likes of Eddies and Grammar in the season proper, seems very odd. Is the young fella Simonson still at Marist? He may be wishing he had stayed at Knox after the hiding they copped.

Roughly 5 Injured, Mate you can get an injuries from training and the 7s comp they played in. There are 10 1st players who are playing in the 7s Finals at Canberra stadium on the Friday night, hence why they are not playing St Gregs on the Saturday. The younger Simonsson's Team Beat knox 27-15, so what thrashing are you referring too? Your lack of knowledge is more embarrassing then the loss to Knox, saying they are a top Sydney rugby school is a ridiculous statement and clearly an uneducated one

I thought Eddies had stopped giving away music scholarships like they did with some of their old 1st XV players lol.

In Canberra private schools fees are not what they are in Syd, Bris, and Melb.

Any household where both parents earn a wage above the national average can send their kids to a private school.

I am referring to the Simonsson who played in the 16's last year and probably 1st XV this year...the 1st XV who got belted by 65 points against Knox. If Knox are not one of the top Rugby Schools in Sydney (at least top 10 anyway) then lets hope Marist dont come up against any, it could be 100 points rather than 65 against one of those schools. Where would you put Knox Guru, in you educated opinion?

Mate the Simonsson from the U16s last year went to St Augustines, not knox, a clear example of your lack of knowledge right there. Knox Would Struggle to make Top 10 as they are Predicted to finish mid table of the CAS comp this year. I would say St Auguestines, OakHill, Barker (predicted to win CAS) all clearly better then them, along with Joeys, View, Newington, Shore, Scots, Kings. I wouldn't refer to a school as being " one of the best Rugby schools in Sydney" if we can clearly state that many schools who are easily better then Knox.
