^^ that is kind of what we are trying to determine.

What freedom of action will the Soup franchises have to run the Academies?

There would be a temptation to warehouse some fresh faced pups to see how/if they develop, but I'd imagine that the franchises would be looking to use it more as a Soup Prep School regardless of age.

Conversely my tin foil hat sees the ARU wanting these to be their Under 20's corral, but funded by the Franchises.

In parallel, the premier Clubs are going to want to get these Academy players playing and training with them.

2: each player in an academy MUST be doing some form of university study. This means schoolboys must therefore put in a bit of academic effort, no Uni, no academy: no academy no super rugby unless they have some post high school qualification.
.

Thats really stupid, some people just arnt smart enough to go to university, are you seriously going to not let someone into a academy if they arnt smart enough to do a degree?

and what if they want to do somthing with their lives that doesnt require a uni degree? Your going to force them to pay for a education they dont want/need?

what if they need a fulltime job to support a family and dont have the time to spare to do both academy training and uni work?

I think that @Churchills cigar is quoting from a USA college sports model.

AFAIK their education system is vastly different to ours, with their Junior High, Senior High, Colleges and Universities, not to mention the "machine" that is USA College and University sport.

The more fundamental principle is that the Academy athlete should be undertaking some form of vocational or professional training (Uni or TAFE) for life post rugby while they are in Rugby.

I was under the impression that, that was already the case for players involved in a super team? They either needed to be studying or working

Surely they can't be that stupid that they can't at least receive a Bachelor of Journalism?

depends what you want your academy to be? A preparation place for Under 20s or a preparation place for Super Rugby?

Do you want your Beau Robinsons of 2011 there? Your Ed O'Donaghues of 2013 in there? Or just fresh faced pups out of school?
I'd reckon you want the likes of Ed and Beau making up a proportion of the squads (like the Reds College) along with the young pups. Toughen them up against experienced players in preparation for Soup and/or the JWC.

Should still be enough U20s spread across the academies to be able to funnel the best into the Aus U20 squad.

The Academies need to be there for the Super squads. The ARU can work out something else for the U20's. There will be a lot of cross over but you need to give older guys the opportunity to be part of the process and not just make it a young man's game.

It is what it is

Thats really stupid, some people just arnt smart enough to go to university, others like plumbers are far too smart to go to Uni because they can make a lot more money out of water and shit. are you seriously going to not let someone into a academy if they arnt smart enough to do a degree?

and what if they want to do somthing with their lives that doesnt require a uni degree? Your going to force them to pay for a education they dont want/need?

Of that trade are we IIWIS?

Brad Bishop, manager of the Parliamentary Wombats team, is a plumber, and Plumbing adviser to ABC 702 Saturday morning Home handyman show with Simon Marnie.

He is not afraid to have a go at the other trades on that show -"Electricians - 3 wires, 3 colours and the striped wire doesn't hurt you. How hard is it to be a sparklie?"

Ed
Ed O'Donaghue is technically a marquee import, so I'm guessing we don't want too many of them in the academy.

The Brumbies are set to raid the young talent stocks from NSW and Qld to bolster up their local competition and keep some kids from turning to the dark side.........

THE ACT has long been considered Australian rugby's little brother, but now the Brumbies plan to raid the rugby nurseries of NSW and Queensland to ''discover some diamonds''.
ACT Rugby hopes the chance to train and play under the noses of Brumbies coaches will lure untapped talent to the capital.
ACT Rugby will host an under-20s trial on November 2, targeting the best junior players from Canberra and interstate and trying to bring them under the umbrella of the Brumbies.
.........
They also want to keep rising stars away from the clutches of the NRL.
''Some of the guys are looking at league and NRL contracts, we're just giving them a rugby opportunity,'' Brumbies coaching and development manager Russell Ingram said.
''This opens up a new pathway. There's a void there for rugby kids. I reckon we can expose a couple of diamonds out of it.

The Force academy is already up back into pre season. Their program is run by Dwane Nestor and they have their own dedicated strength and conditioning coach. I think the older guys are running about 3-4 sessions a week at the moment.

I know that they have rejiged how the players are classified and I can try and chase that up this week.

To further push the Under 20's/Franchise Colts vs Academies vs Wider Training Squads discussion, this from the Tahs:
http://www.waratahs.com.au/News/NewsArticle/tabid/157/ArticleID/10629/Default.aspx

NSW Coach Michael Cheika is on a state-wide search for the next wave of NSW Waratahs ahead of next year’s National Under 20s Championship.
And Cheika’s promise to leave no stone unturned in his efforts to field a stellar outfit that will be known as the NSW Colts will provide the chance of a lifetime for up and coming youngsters with the passion and talent to represent their state.
Delighted at the introduction of a defined pathway that gives youngsters an opportunity to showcase their skills as they enter professionalism, the NSW Waratahs coach says skill, ability and commitment will get a player into the Colts squad and they’ll need to maintain these attributes once in the program to stay there.

Some of these kids in the "zone" for selection for the U20's could be doing a fair bit of Rugby.
