Let me digress for a second. All genuflect to that great rugby man John Thornett.

Un-digressing, how many times since 1963 have the Wallabies played the Bokke in successive tests in RSA ... leaving aside the silliness of carrying forward from one year to the next?

Don't forget Australia toured SA in 1969, played four tests and lost the lot.

I call them "Australia" advisedly as up until the 80s the term "Wallabies" was reserved for the touring party of the British Isles. Before then it was possible to be an Australian test player but not a Wallaby if someone played a test in Australia, or against another nation away but not in Britain or Ireland. Conversely, it was possible to be a Wallaby but not play a test if a player was a dirt-tracker on a tour of the British Isles. The Wallabies were called the "First Wallabies" who toured in 1908 up to the, was it, "Tenth Wallabies" who toured in the late 70s. The ARU changed the naming of Australian test teams in the 80s to calling them all "Wallabies".

A dim bell is ringing to tell me the name "All Blacks" may have had a similar history.

i dont see how this is so hard to comprehend, these successive tests in RSA is more about the fact that we havent beaten them twice in a row in RSA since 1963, Its not so much about the 'successive' test factor, its more about beating them twice in a row regardless of the tests backing up against each other, and i dont see how you can ignore the factor of carrying it from one year to the next! apart from the physchological barriers it puts up for players its also a fundamental part of records.

I'm pretty sure that 1969 when we lost the lot was the last tour we ever had there.

We started going back there when the ban was lifted after the 1991 RWC.

When the professional era started we played there just once ever year in 3N but a few years back we played an additional game for the Mandela plate and lost both.

But will it make any "difference" if we do it? The Boks hadn't won in NZ for 10 yrs, and not at Dunedin (IIRC), did it, and look where they are now. I get the sense that NZ and SA fans never really feel the Wallabies are an equal foe than those countries are to each other, and historically they are right. It seems to me there is an attitude that whatever the Wallabies achieve, next time they will falter. It's as much no-one really thinks SA will lose another test in a row, as no-one believing Aust will win another.
These milestones ( or indeed millstones) are great, but since the Wobbs won at Dunedin, what have we done in NZ? I want to see us win to prove the Wallabies are getting an ability to back up, more than breaking a 40 yr hoodoo in SA. On form I think we should. Being an Aussie rugby fan I'm more pragmatic and accept there's a good chance we may not.

From a leaning forward grasping position the straw they usually reach for are the ones that relate to winning two games being enough to win a best of 3 series... to the filthy animals in the media, winning 2 out of 2 is enough to sell some more inches.

We won the silverware though - who cares about game 3 ? We'll need a bigger trophy cabinet soon.

I admire the amazing psychological ploy by Robbie Deans - winning the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate but lulling the Boks into thinking PDV is good and that their #1 World Ranking is still justified. The Boks will slowly implode from within. Robbie is a genius.
