Strange names a burden

RUGBY Mac Mangan has an unusual first name shared with fewer than half a dozen people in NSW.

Parents Elizabeth and Ryan Mangan, of Coogee, wanted to bestow their son, born six weeks ago, with a name that would set him apart from the rest.

They're not alone. Parents' desire to give their kids creative names is growing as Hollywood celebrities lead the trend. But the Catholic archdiocese of Sydney is advising parents against giving their children celebrity-inspired names.

Following in the words of the Pope - who last week urged parents to return to tradition and use the Bible for inspiration - Chris Meney, director of the archdiocese's Life, Marriage and Family Centre, said parents had a "responsibility" to give their children biblical names or those of saints.

"The Church teaches that parents, sponsors and the pastor are to take care that a name foreign to a Christian mentality is not given," Mr Meney said.

"Besides the Christian significance, one wonders why parents would burden their child with strange and peculiar names."

I'm not one for names which arent names and are nouns, but still, I have a feeling that someone in the family likes rugby...

Slightly irrelevant but a but of fun...

Not the only name to come out of that tournament, during the quarter final after a certain intercept a mate declared "My first born son will be called Stirling". Stirling starts school this year..

when my first child was still in the womb, I nicknamed him rugby. The nickname strengthened when I saw the name was actually in one of those baby name books.

My eldest two kids, who were 4 and 2 when my wife was pregnant with our third wanted him to be named Brumby Jack (we have season tickets and they see him all the time) we didnt quite go with it but his middle name is Jack.

I also tried to convince my wife that our girl should be Ella, after all i did start watching RU when Mark was at the height of his powers!!

we asked the eldest (3) what we should name the impending and got Thomas or Toby. Definately like the idea of Ella though
