2020 crowds and ratings

2020 thread for crowds and ratings. Focus on rugby but relevant comparisons from other sports/countries are welcome

Ratings can be found @mediaweekaus, tvtonight, footyindustry.com and other sources

Comparisons with previous years will be hard as Kayo has drastically changed the landscape. There are no kayo ratings publically available AFAIK.

With that in mind, we post what we have. Presumably comparisons between sports in 2020 are still relevant.

Brumbies v Reds crowd was 7436.
Full credit to each one of them who turned out at 40 degrees

Super Rugby: Fox Sports

That's not so bad for the Brumbies/Reds game. Nobody from the far southern suburbs was likely to show up with bushfires raging in the vicinity, and the heat certainly would have kept more away. I missed the game because I'm currently in enemy territory, suffering in the immense heat and humidity of western Sydney.

I reckon in good conditions the crowd would probably have surpassed 10,000. Would prefer 20,000 but any increase over recent years would be welcome.

How the journos came up with rugby being 4th behind soccer is anyone's guess. If rugby is dying, what is the A-league.

You’ve compared two different things there though

Soccer in the country is growing

But A-League is a competition which is dead in the ass

Soccer is like Basketball whereby it doesn’t need a thriving domestic competition to grow in popularity in Australia

K. Just pointing out it was a weird comparing a code to a domestic comp, while you’re at it you might want to compare the Basketball to the NRL or the NBA to cricket

Optus sport, who show the EPL and Champions league have something like twice the number of subscribers as Kayo does.

It's not apples for apples because of how access is paid for, but really shows the market there.

World Sevens Series in Sydney did around 35k on TV. Long day so not too bad of an average.

I reckon a lot of people have Optus as a default. I have Optus sport included in my phone contract at no extra costs (in theory) and wouldnt pay for it if i had to. EPL is fine and all - but not going to pay a monthly sub for a comp I can only watch in the middle od the night.

Yep, it's a default. You get access as an Optus customer - if you are a customer you pay for it with your monthly bill whether you watch it in the midddle of the night or not.

Optus think it's worth spending (at least) $63m a year for the rights to drive more people to sign up for the optus mobile service.

They claim 700,000+ people have downloaded and are subscribed to their Optus sports app

But their contracts seem equivalent to other services that dont include EPL coverage (telstra etc) - On that basis I would argue you dont pay for it?
