2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Just to expand a little, 3 teams averaged home games around 55k, while Tahs averaged 75k


compared to last year,
Brumbies at home stayed about the same,
Reds at home dropped a further 6k to the equal lowest rating,
Rebels at home up 10k on average
but the Tahs were the big winners with home games up 15k year on year

helped a lot by the season high 128k for the Reds game at the SCG

So TV viewership doing alright, but match day crowds hitting new lows every year................

Would it be fair to say that people still want to watch the games, but they just don't want to attend them?

Could be a comment on the lack of match day experience at the games. Which has always been a bit lacking.

The Canberra Raiders seemed to have improved on that and they're now getting the kinds of crowds the Brumbies used to get, and on the flipside the Brumbies are now getting the crowds the Raiders used to get through those years.

So it is possible to turn things around.........

I'm not expecting much of a turnout this weekend, particularly against the Sharks.

But at least they didn't schedule it for 6.30pm on a Friday again.

It's something Rugby admin seem either ignorant of or completely dismissive toward. With entertainment being what it is today it's just simpler to tune in from a warm, comfortable lounge or the pub than turning out paying overs for everything without their being added value. Say what you will about the BBL but it launched with a fan focused model which despite a bit of a plateau in the last season with the change over from 10 to 7 and the paywall it has been a very successful league in it's relatively short history thanks to focusing on providing the fans with the best possible overall experience. Rugby could learn an awful lot.

Records for crowds are a lot sketchier, but for the numbers I could find.....
Rebels didn't publish enough to make a comment. They never looked good though.
Brumbies stayed about the same as last year at mid-8000s
Tahs down a little probably due to having no home ground
Reds down nearly 10% once again and 4 games under 10000 which hasn't happened for a very long time as far as I can tell

RA's own stated target is 100k viewers for each game involving Australian teams. the average is about 55k.

crowds are abysmal. need to be careful at just looking at improvements on last couple of years.

No. It's fallen well short of that target. But it hasn't completely collapsed as with the likes of the A-League. The last two seasons has seen increases from the low in 2017. We need to focus on coaching and retention in our squads and looking at increasing ball in play to increase the overall product. I honestly think we should be looking at the GRR variations with the exception of the 35 minute halves as they seem to have had a significant effect on the games in a positive manner.

I have the Aus games up by that 10%, averaging around 61k. 2017 was the nadir, average of around 51k.

The really big rounds early in the season helped lift it up

I have aus games at 57k this season

Agreed, Reds figures are very rubbery. We used to have season tickets at the Milton Road end in the stand in line with the 22 and it used to be pretty full, and prior to that we were on the opposite side - again full. We gave up and looking on tv at the shots of those stands and it is mainly empty seats. These stands comprised quite a big section of the paying crowd (freebies of kids were usually put behind the posts) so the numbers must be very low.

Capacity crows of 10500 at North Sydney as well. Talk is they'll take it to Parramatta in the next couple of years
