You have to feel a bit sorry for this years U20s players but this new development strategy is a step in the right direction.

I think this cohort must be used to this type of stuff of having Rep programs cancelled when it comes to them.... was only 4 years ago when the ARU decided to cancel the U16 Nationals when they got to them (only to re-instate the U16 Nationals again last year)

Don’t be too sure.
A 2 week tournament sounds a lot like the schools process - which is ok for what it is but it has no intention of or role in producing pro players. The u20s supposedly does perform that role.
A much better solution would be to run u20s NRC teams in the shadows of the NRC over many weeks with each team playing each other team.
We never look for the better solution though.

You make a good point. Hopefully the new development strategy will evolve and improve. The obvious benefit is the extended preparation time before the WC and the Oceania for the squad, minus the disruption to their Club footy. That will benefit the Clubs with only Australian reps missing Club games during the season, although it's still to be determined when the mid season trial games will be played. The drawback, as you've mentioned is the brief amount of game time against other State teams, thereby denying them more experience of competing at a higher level. Playing U19s curtain raisers to the NRC games sounds like a good idea.

Getting old and my memory is never reliable, but I think our most successful period in U20/21s as its been from time to time was when they were left to play their clubs, got picked into "zone" teams, played each other and then went to whatever tournament was being played. The "professionalisation" of the code at and from this level has not really worked and I see serious downside in the current plan: it assumes that enough is or has been seen of the cohort to know where everyone fits and to identify the later developers and make sure they have a shot. The present Gen Blue squad reflects the Oz schoolboys of 2016 +one or two (and a third who just should not be there): that is not a recipe for long term success at this or the next level. While it is modelled on NZ think, as usual, it looks like NZ but the implementation is way wide of comparable with them.

Whats happening out there in Colts land?
Been very quiet for a while
How are numbers amongst the clubs
RA say numbers in rugby are increasing so is this showing in Colts numbers?
From a Southern D perspective our numbers are down, still ok but are down on previous years by about 10 to 15 players

Now that we are nearing trials hopefully you'll get the stragglers who didn't want to put themselves through the pre-season, show up. But regardless 10-15 down is a significant hit over 3 grades....

Have you lost many colts to grade?
We had about 22 leave because of age and about 16 of those are in the grade group
So our colts are doing the job in getting guys ready to play grade and make an impact

Wicks Colts played against a Bowral grade side
Wicks colts didnt play Bowral, it fell through.
Souths Colts played Bowral grade on Saturday in very hot conditions.
Good hit out for both clubs and Bowral were excellent hosts.

The Honey Badger

Uni to play an Argentinian touring side; San Andres as first trial next Tuesday 13th.

With two rounds of colts trials completed what have we learnt?

Is anyone out there ready and bullish enough to make early predictions on who is going to make the finals based on trial form.
