Shit, that is scarily bad. Especially when we allow for the fact that there is a big Kiwi rugby-adoring population in Aus that will likely buy Foxtel just for S18, Tests etc, they will surely stay as a more consistent rugby viewer base than most Aussies.
We can be sure these numbers are somewhere figuring in the 'very careful review of the S18 format that has so far lasted for 8 months and that goes on interminably' that SANZAAR has underway, very much including the viewpoints of the broadcasters.
As the days go by, the more likely something drastic is going to happen. These numbers and in general the growing sentiment is one of disdain and rejection of all things super rugby. Like any business that has a specific product a new direction and rebranding of the product is required. I just hope the aru doesn't look at and believe the product is 'super rugby' instead of the actual product being rugby union.
R3, if the ARU understood and considered carefully the strategic interests of Australian rugby - and its fans - in a competent, serious manner, they would never, ever have agreed to the S18 in its current formatre would be pigs flying.
I have Foxtel and I've watched less rugby this year then any year in recent history, the doom and glom of a team been cut has certainly dampened my interest.. That and Australian Super Rugby teams seem to be regressing in their basic skills.
I'm happy for clarky to stay but kearns, kafer and marto can right royally F off. Some of the new comers Jeremy Paul and Cameron Shepherd Iv found to be great on some of the news programs. Phil Waugh should also avoid all media if possible.
Rugby is a huge asset to fox sports, despite the figures. As 85% of those viewers purely have fox for rugby, where as nrl/afl etc viewers aren't reliant on fox to get their fix. They are also desperate for live content, problem is super rugby isn't supplying the content required to satisfy this need. Today was fantastic, we need more of this, fox would know this as well. I really wouldn't be overly surprised if they have stated they are prepared to invest more money if they can have greater control over content and have a better supply of games at times suitable to their audience, otherwise I suspect they'd be looking to reduce the pie supplied.
Clarke is a goose who when challenged a few years ago about these very issues and the likely outcomes he could do nothing but spout the praises of the ARU as he has done since he started. He and his ilk have not a shred of journalistic integrity, he and they have been complicit in the downfall of the code in this country by not asking a few informed and critical questions and requiring some integrity of process from the Union(s). Remember not a serious question from these sycophants about the appointments of various coaches and officials where there were obvious questions to be asked, such as Richard Graham, Foley to Force, Foley at the Tahs after Hickey, Deans re-signing prior to 2011 RWC, the various "world wide" searches that find candidates in the carparks. The list is endless and it has taken until this absolute crisis for them to actually discuss the obvious when they should have been shedding light on issues and trying to avoid the collapse by pushing better systems and performance.
edit:- And I now only keep Fox on so I can have Game Of Thrones. Off it goes at the end of August, the rugby should be my prime reason, but it is a sideline that I watch unless I have something else to do.
It's more than a reasonable possibility that Foxtel will be looking for ways to use the infamous SANZAAR current S18 'review' to cut its $ commitment to rugby and further cut its weekly broadcasting costs for live matches here.
I would delightedly support any measures deemed prudent to cut their rugby commentators' weekly costs; numerous posters here could do a far superior job (and may even know the Laws of the code which most Foxtel comms clearly do not) and at a far lower cost I would surmise.
Divide them by 10 WCR and I think you'd be closer to the mark.Yeah, they are fairly shite. Honestly, at this stage I say how much worse could it be if we elected to just go it alone. Take our 5. Have both the Tahs and Reds rebrand to the Syd Tahs and Brisbane Reds bring in both Country squads (could all be run out of Moore Park and Ballymore) and do as the A-League does (each team plays each other 3 times for 27 games in a season) to have a 18 round season with whoever finishes at the top of the ladder being crowned champions ala the EPL.
If you wanted some balance and a finals series bring in Fiji for the 8th squad and play 21 rounds plus a 4 team finals series for 23 weeks in total.
Seriously, the ratings couldn't be any worse.
These would be the only 2 commentators I would listen to:
the podcasts on mmm for rio were hilariousYou and Aus rugby have one thing in common, both stuck in a time warp and still believe it's the year 2000.
Divide them by 10 WCR and I think you'd be closer to the mark.
