So you conclude Reg that the QRU has been knowingly inflating Reds home crowd figures every year 'things go bad'?

If so, the overall point is doubly concerning.

(Btw, my source for the 2009 Reds crowd numbers was the SANZAR official Wikipedia page re all 2009 S14 results which includes crowd data for each game.)
Why do you think they only do it when things are bad?

90k for Tahs vs Jags
200k for Lions vs ABs
Foxsports (mediaweek)
200k carry over from the lions start watching the game.

No one at all left watching by the end of the game.

Average result = 90k!

As a broad answer: because in that short period when the Reds did well my own anecdotal sense of the then reported crowd numbers aligned reasonably with my own others' sense of the actual crowd in games we attended.

They did it all the way through the Carmichael era.

I am still convinced that all gate figures include the total number of members even if they don't appear on the night. The seats have already been sold as part of the membership and probably need to be accounted for in the game revenue.

This is at least encouraging.

There is clearly an appetite for rugby in Australia if the quality is high.

Our problem is that none of our teams are producing it!
Yes! If you put on decent quality, competitive games people will watch. No one wants to see one-sided fumble fests (or even close fumble fests for that matter).

39 turnovers in the final AB Lions test. (22 v 15)

Whatever it was that meant a relatively decent amount of people tuned in, they weren't worried about fumbles.....

Season so far (making some reasonable assumptions for a number of unreported games)

  • Total attendance around 390,000. Average about 11,000
  • Reds + Tahs ave around 15,000
  • Brumbies around 10,000
  • Force around 9,000
  • Rebels around 8,000
(lots of assumptions around the Rebels number due to the number of unreported games)

NRL - 2million, ave 15,400 (down 1%)
AFL - 4.64million, ave 34,400 (up 15%)

They did it all the way through the Carmichael era.

What a despicable disgrace if so. Knowingly misleading - more like deceiving - sponsors and fans.

But note my reference above to 2009 crowd figures was of course pre J Carmichael's arrival.

That may be true BR.

If it is it would be illegal under the Trade Practices Act as as it would clearly be trapped by the TPA's 'false and misleading' conduct provisions re those persons or bodies so declaring these falsely inflated numbers in that any reasonable person hearing of or reading 'game crowd numbers' or simply 'crowd (then XXXX number)' in a written match report would assume that meant the actual number of persons walking through a ground's turnstiles to actually, physically attend the game in question and be a 'crowd' of measurable in-attendance observers to that game.

So if you are correct the knowingly deceitful practice is morally and legally indefensible.

Foxtel numbers now tending to show that Super Foxtel numbers overall are being propped up by a deep core of Aus-based Kiwi rugby fans, which makes sense.
