you could put Dewet Roos in there for Barbarian watch from the Eagles v Rams game. He was mentioned as a MOM candidate.

One area that will need adressing when picking the squad is the rule and game changes. E.g penalties, points differences, speed of the game, set piece quality.

So far in two rounds, if we were picking the best 'non' contracted players;

1. Hayden Hirsmaki (Queensland Country)
2. Josh Holmes (North Harbour Rays)
3. Jermaine Ainsley (Perth Spirit)
4. Ned Hanigan (NSW Country)
5. Richie Arnold (Queensland Country)
6. Richard Hardwick (Perth Spirit)
7. David Hickey (Sydney Stars)
8. Sam Ward (North Harbour Rays)
9. Joe Powell (UC Vikings)
10. Isaac Thompson (UC Vikings)
11. Iziah Perese (Queensland Country)
12. Lloyd Johanson (Melbourne Rising)
13. Jim Stewart (Sydney Stars)
14. Alex Gibbon (Brisbane City)
15. Junior Laloifi (Brisbane City)

16. Alex Mafi (Queensland Country)
17. Duncan Chubb (Melbourne Rising)
18. Tom Roberts (Sydney Stars)
19. Corey Thomas (Brisbane City)
20. Rowan Perry (UC Vikings)
21. Josh Holmes (North Harbour Rays)
22. Jai Ayoub (Greater Sydney Rams)
23. Harry Jones (Sydney Stars)

24. Radike Samo (Queensland Country)
25. Paul Asquith (Greater Sydney Rams)

Tough selections their with all teams to be represented

Why is this game against a Heartland combined side? Seems a big mismatch. Should've just been an ITM non-contracted team too.

Is the criteria just anyone who didn't have a Super Rugby contracted in 2015, whether it was full or EPS regardless if they have one for next year already?

It says anyone who was not contracted in the 2015 season. However do they include WTS/EDS type players, it is this area which will need clearing up.
I understand not being able to pick EPS players but I think allowing WTS/EDS players to play would be sensible. I mean they have either been on the bench or have played next to no super rugby anyways, this being there only chance to gain match time. Wouldn't see the trouble in allowing those players to be selected.

ITM non-contracted is a little hard to differentiate, the best 'non super rugby' ITM Cup players are still essentially full time professionals, in each team the best players will be on $60'000/annum which is the maximum player payment, the overall salary cap is $1.3million so obviously not every player will be on the maximum payment. ITM Cup also allows 2 veteran players who can receive up to $90'000/annum.

Fair point, but it's probably because the Heartland XV concept already exists (played against Cook Islands last year and thrashed them). Not really such a thing as an ITM selection AFAIK.

The average wage would be 35k I think in the ITM. Most would be considered semi-pro.

Teams wouldn't average the wages out though, the best 5 or 6 players in every team would on the full $60'000 making them essentially full time professionals.

I mention it because the 'non-super rugby' players in the ITM cup are a step above in professionalism then the non-super rugby players in the NRC. If you were to select a 'ITM Cup XV' of non super rugby ITM player they would still be professional rugby players, compared to the NRC Barbarians who are amateur.

The heartland XV might be a step down for the Barbarians team, but an ITM XV would also be a big step up.

Good side. Think you will find Jim Stewart & Ned Hanigan are contracted to the Tahs.

Marsters was switched to fullback when Placid went off, not Ili. Not to say he shouldn't be in the best, just that he stayed on the keft wing for 80 minutes.

Still cut about Criff Tupou..was keen to see him getting game time and showing the sort of barging no.8 running with Higs and Gill for City that the reds have been missing (but hopefully will get out of the slightly smaller but more talented Tui and Fakasolia)

With Sam Ward gone, are there many no.8s apart from Vaea making a 'traditional' no.8 impact ? Signed or otherwise even?
