Interest from SA in a SH under 20s tournament:

The Northern Hemisphere has had a distinct advantage going into the annual Junior World Championship, but that may soon evaporate.

South African Under-20 coach Dawie Theron said discussions are underway to organise a four-nations Rugby Championship style tournament for juniors

The reason is that when the Six Nations teams - England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy - get into the play-offs of the IRB JWC they have the experience of a tough competition to fall back on.

"They play that [Six Nations U20 competition] a few months before going to the [Junior] World Cup," Theron said, in reaction to his team's one-point loss to England in the Final in Auckland earlier this month.

"We are going to work very hard on wiping out that edge [the Northern Hemisphere teams have]," the Baby Bok coach said.

Theron said while they lost, 20-21, in the Final, they feel they can take England on any day.

Asked about the possibility of a four-nations, Rugby Championship-like competition for juniors, Theron said that is not a decision that coaches can make.

"However, one of the plans we have, and I have discussed this with some people, is that at coaching level that are interest - both from Australia, New Zealand and even Argentina," Theron told rugby365.

"The key is where and how do we fit it in [to existing calendar]. Financially it will pose some serious questions. It is indeed an idea [that has been put out there] and we have to try and drive it.

"If it is viable it will be a fantastic opportunity for all of us. Just look how fast the players are coming through already. Earlier we said that player X could perhaps tour [with the senior Springboks] at the end of the year and there is Handré Pollard in the Bok squad already.

We are running our provincial Craven Week this week and bonus for the top players is to get in the SA Schools side to play against England, France and Wales. They use this to prepare their u20 players for the 6 Nations and ending up at the JWC in Italy next year.

Lombardia and Emilia Romagna in Italy will provide the backdrop for the IRB Junior World Championship next year.

Kicking off just months ahead of Rugby World Cup 2015, the future stars of world Rugby will be welcomed to Parma, Viadana, Calvisano, and Cremona. Matches will be played on June 2, 6, 10, 15 with the final on June 20 in Cremona.

Details around the teams, times, venues and ticketing arrangements for matches at the tournament in Lombardia and Emilia Romagna, Italy will be announced in the early part of 2015.

Anyone got the inside oil on the selection process for the Junior Men in Gold for 2015?

Hopefully it will be similar to the 2014 process - State Based training squads into a State Competition (plus Combined States competition) before finalisation of the Aust Squad with some "proper" and challenging lead up games.

With most club GF's this weekend, some of the leading colts (and grade) players likely to be in contention for 2015 U20's have been named in NRC teams, so this will help them with traditional "off season" fitness and form.

There have been suggestions that there should be a Under 20 component to the NRC to re-align "The Pathway". If the $ are available, there would be a lot of merit in this suggestion.

Hopefully in a few years.

We need to make the actual NRC work first. It's far more important for that to be sustainable than to try and add competitions below it.

There is talk of some of the NRC franchises establishing U20 development squads.

Not too sure what all that means, but when we are just getting a structured methodology of selecting our Under 20 squad for the Jnr RWC, is is such a wise thing to throw another level of complexity into the whole development pathway, that may or may not be supported by the Centre.

Some kids are in Sevens development programmes, the old Academy model seems to have been devolved to the Super Rugby Franchise to prepare for the Southern States U20 competition, and then the QLD v NSW v Combined Southern States v Samoa competition. The likes of Kellaway will be in Super Rugby Programmes. Then there are some of the Sydney Colts programmes that run elite development programmes starting in October (Hobbits, Wicks, Norths, MMM and The Corporation).

I'm all for more kids to be exposed to higher level challenging development and S&C programmes, but if it is not all that tightly coordinated and controlled, instead of developing depth, it can lead to elements of confusion and player burnout may occur.

Any under 20 development squads that exist with the NRC teams won't conflict with any of those existing options though.

There is talk of some of the NRC franchises establishing U20 development squads.

I think these squads are just shadow squads in case of injuries. I think they have thrown in a few games so that those players keep some fitness rather than starting their off-season now which for some players involves more eating, drinking, travelling etc.

^^^^ It is going to be hard to compete with these roosters in two years time at Jnr RWC 2016.
Our 2014 National U18 side (Australian Schoolboys) will effectively play 3 games this year, 1 of which will not be a test.

On a separate note, a snout tells me that the National U20 tournament will again be held in Canberra next year. Dates are March 20 - 25 2015.

One supposes that they are using last years template, so there will be a Southern States tournament a week or so before that from which a Southern States Rep team will be chosen to attend a four team tournament in Canberra. Assume that Samoa or Fiji will be the fourth team in Canberra, joining NSW, Qld, and Southern States.

Most S&C gurus recommend that athletes have at least 1 month off all training per year. With most Colts GF's happening last weekend, I'd see squads of around 50 or so starting to assemble in mid to late October in preparation for the whittling down process for the State Teams for National /Southern States U20's in March 2015.

So these players from the 2014 Australian Under 20 Team are still Under 20 next year, and must be considered as favoured to retain their jumper for 2015:

Cameron ORR
Matthew SANDELL
Sam CROKE
Lolo FAKAOSILEA
Andrew KELLAWAY
Conrad QUICK
Jonah PLACID

Add in Fereti SA'AGA who was with Southern States and Samoa U20's, and possibly Cameron SKELTON NSW and Samoa U20 (but he has signed with the Chiefs and the NZ team may be looking to use his services next year - who knows)

A useful guide as to who may be in the selection window is the National U18 team from 2 years prior.
The 2013 Aust Schoolboys (plus Aust A Schoolboys) were:

Australian Schoolboys 2013
Joshua ANDERSON
Lachlan CANNELL

Queenslanders typically finish school in their 17th year, so some of the 2012 Aust A and Schoolboys will be age eligible for 2015 Under 20's as well. This group includes:

Schoolboys 2012
Jack CORNELSEN
Lolo FAKAOSILEA (above Aust U20 2014)
Michael GUNN
Gareth KALELL
Adam KORCZYK
Jonah PLACID (above Aust U20 2014)
Aaron PLEASH

Jack TUTTLE
Brad WILKIN (above 2013 Schoolboy)

Aust A 2012
Adam DECK
Sam GREENE
Monty IOANE
Tim MANNS
Philip POTGIETER
Daniel PREEN

Expect to see many of these names in the State U20 teams along with some "smokies" from the various colts programmes around the show.

Quite a few of the names above have found themselves spots in the NRC teams.

Nicholas Shehadie (39)
Jack CLANCY (2015 19 y/o)

I've been told that Norths Colts were asked to play Jack at 10, rather than 15 (where he was playing at the time) by the NSW u20s coach, as he was apparently impressed with him and has earmarked him for 2015 and beyond. This can only bode well for his Aus u20s chances.

Likewise, his twin Nick has been playing extremely well at fullback for Norths colts (and has put on a lot of size since leaving school).

As these two have both 2015 and 2016 in the u20s mix, I'm sure that we'll see them playing for Aus at some stage, whether it be this year or the next.

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
^^^^ Some fairly stiff opposition for the 10 jumper coming from Andrew DEEGAN at Randwick, who has spent the year bouncing between 1st Grade and 1st Colts, plus was in the NSW U20 this year.

I'd see Jack CLANCY hitting his stripes for the 2016 mob, but a possible inclusion next year at State level for development purposes.

I like to watch

David Codey (61)
If Clancy is eligible in 2016, great.
Pick him on his 2015 form.
He looked at the right level in Colts 2's this year.
If you selected all similarly performed players from the Colts 2's comp, the squad would be massive.

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
Northern Suburbs have a good crop of #10's at the moment. In addition to Clancy, Cory Tulloch has been playing 2nd Grade at Norths this year in his first year out from school, with the odd game in Shute Shield. I'd imaging that he will also be looking for a gig at State level for the #10 jumper.

Forcefield

Ken Catchpole (46)
From WA I think the following guys are eligible and up to standard:
Oscar Backhouse (Lock)
Tim Koiatu (Outside back)
Angus Taylor (Scrum-half)

And maybe:

Kane Koteka (Openside flanker)

Might be a few other dark horses as well. The U20s championships next year will be exciting.
